I was not around for the Guild Wars beta period, so I have no clue.
Will you be able to go on "GW2 Beta" anytime, or just "beta event" weekends? When the actual game is released, will you have your character from the beta? |

Well, I know for the Nightfall preview weekend you had limited access to NF, and you got to keep your character. Although, you couldn't play it until NF was officially released.
So, I dunno if it'll be something like that or different. |

There isn't any detailed information regarding the beta other than the fact that they plan to have it sometime closer to the release, unlike the original Guild Wars.
From the FAQ on Gw2 When will there be a beta? Although we publically alpha- and beta-tested the original Guild Wars while it was still in early development, with Guild Wars 2 we will commence beta testing closer to the game's release. With that in mind, we will not start beta testing in 2008 as we had originally planned. Guild Wars 2 is a very large and ambitious game, and Guild Wars players rightfully have very high expectations of its quality. We want players to be absolutely blown away by the game the first time they experience it.

I've read the FAQ and I'm aware that the beta will be close to release, but my question was how it works, so that really doesn't help. thanks, though.
Here, let my clarify: How did the old Guild Wars beta work? I want to have an idea what this one may be like. Thanks, Sword and Neo Nugget. |

i wasn't around for the original GW beta, but i was around for the factions beta and onwards.
A little search on the wiki also shows that the there were a number of weekend beta events prior to release, the wiki says that there were 6 beta weekend events. I would assume GW2 will go in a similar fashion, a number of beta weekends as they build up to the release. You will not keep any characters, items, or anything else from the betas. Since often things are broken and can be abused during betas (thats the whole point of them) everything is reset before release. Last edited by Darkstar The Legend; Aug 25, 2009 at 05:59 PM. Actually, for the proph beta you were able to keep your character as well as its name, but you had to start over in the storyline. You were also prevented from going so far in the storyline, for obvious reasons. Your weapons and things were also gone.
Since they were all on weekends I'm assuming the GW2 beta will take place on a weekend too. |

From what i remember they were on weekends (though unsure if they didnt start off with an always open to then switch to weekends only, bear with me on this one 4y ago) ... but i know for sure there were weekends on which you could log on and play the game and make comments and suggestions on a board and also file bugg reports if you happened to run into any bugs or weird places (with screenshot) ... Then after so many weekends they closed the beta and from what i remember then turned most of the game around and released it rather different then it was in the beta
... if one was in the beta you could keep your name and character, but for everything else you had to start a new

The only thing I could see being a pain is the keeping of your beta character. Will the GW1 link be active for beta? (I doubt it) So you may not be able to keep it and link your GW1 account when launch day comes..

I wonder something, I don't wanna make a new thread about it so I'll append to this one:
how far into storyline are we talking about? Was Nightfall beta limited to eg. Istan only? or did it stop before Desolation? |

I wonder how they will choose the people who will enter beta.

All in all, after Factions launched, I noted that I had already completed about 25% of the campaign in beta, so I made sure to not venture any further than the next couple of town in Nightfall, as to not spoil the fun too much. And as as far as I remember, the beta was indeed limited to Istan. |

So, where do I sigh up for the GW2 beta :P
Just curious to know how these open beta's work. Can anyone with a pre-order attend, or do you have to sign up somewhere? There probably isn't any official info on that right now, but if there is, please let us know. I would hate it if I missed that chance. |

Actually.....
[Information gleaned from 3rd Quarter 2009 NCSoft Report specifically states that GW2 will likely have a public event in the form of a closed beta in 2010 with current projected release date in 2011] <- http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild...d_beta_testing So it looks as though the beta will be closed, which re-opens the question "How do you get into the beta?" I sure hope the beta won't be limited to the U.S., or only available to the super-speshal GW1 ANet pets... everyone should be given a fair chance to get in on the beta, even if it is going to be closed. |

Anyway, it's silly to say "everyone should have a fair chance". I just hope I'm a speshal(sic) pet.

Why would that be silly to say? Everyone should be given a fair chance to get in on the closed beta - since GW is such a diverse community, it would be absurd to only give access to those players in the United States for example, or to select players based on how much they suck up to ANet. Announcements should be made, directions should be clear so that any one who wants to get into the beta has a shot at it - usually closed betas have a limit of how many players are accepted, but anyone should be able to put their name in, otherwise ANet is just pissing on the rest of us.

From all the betas (from Prophecies to Eye of the North) I have been with at Anet, the special requirement will be preordering most likely. When they have released preorders, they have given beta keys inside the little preorder box along with a "friend pass" whom you can give to one person for one weekend. Note, this MAY NOT BE TRUE FOR GW2. It depends on the mercy of Anet at this point but that is how it went during Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall (I don't count Eye of the North as it was a non-campaign, that beta was open to anyone with GW account who played that weekend).
