As said, the Kodan are a completely different race. They were not shown before, obviously, and were pushed south by Jormag similar to the norn. Unlike the norn, they are not shapeshifters and they live in cities on giant icebergs called Sanctuaries.

Or, as Ree puts it:

Quote:
Are the kodan just another form of the norn or a species of their own? They seem to be living on an iceberg with sails. Does that mean that their city is constantly changing position?

Ree Soesbee: Kodan are not norn. Kodan are not shapechangers; the form you see is their sole physical form. Some scholars hypothesize that the two races may share a common history, but they are not at all the same race.

The great kodan sanctuaries, their cities, are mobile. However, with the rise of the dragon Jormag in the far north, their Sanctuaries have been pushed out of the massive ice seas and into the shallow bays and harbors that border the Shiverpeaks. They cannot return to the arctic oceans, for fear that the dragon will destroy them utterly.

According to the Wiki:

Quote:
The kodan are a race of armored polar bears appearing in norn areas. They once inhabited the icy seas, living in large, mobile Sanctuaries. Because of the rise of Jormag, they moved these structures to the bays and harbors adjacent to the Shiverpeaks.
That would seem to imply they are an entirely different race, that has allied with the Norn due to common interest.

Yeah, like JR said they seem to be an entirely separate race from the Norn and were pushed south by the dragon like the Norn. It bugs me every time I see someone calling them a polar bear Norn form.

Lol. Norn polar bear form. Use this quote next time you run into those guys.

"Kodan are not norn. Kodan are not shapechangers; the form you see is their sole physical form. Some scholars hypothesize that the two races may share a common history, but they are not at all the same race."

This discussion sparked the following question in my mind ...

If Norn are shape shifters, is the human form their original form? or just one of the forms they can shift into...

Lets assume that the human form (standing upright, got fingers, evolved mind etc) is the perfect body to survive.

Now, in real life, the only ones with "perfect bodies" are us humans (apes close by, but lacks some stuff). why this is, we don't know, but a theory is that we humans hold the other animals back, stops them to evolve to evolve a higher mind. Just a theory, don't get all angry about it, I'm no scientist after all

In guildwars or any other fantasy based game/story, there are alot of creatures that have (presumably) evolved to the "perfect body". Examples being Sylvari, Charr, Norn, Asuran (not fully evolved, but still), centaurs (Not fully either, but they're on their way ) and so on.

Now, assume kodans and Norn evolved from a bear. The kodan evolved as most other races, to the "perfect body", but still got their original appearance (bear head, fur claws etc).

But then why are Norn more alike humans than kodans? The thing that makes Norn unique from other races are their shapeshifting. Lets imaging the shapeshifting being a sort of "magical mutation" of the cells. If that is the case, maybe it was easier for norn to evolve to the shape they're in now, seeing as they (If this theory is somewhat true) can mutate their cells.

I personally would like to see the Norn being subspecies of kodan than humans, so we can stop this "Norn/human hybrid" talk

Humans are intelligent yes but we do not have perfect body's are body's and the body's of animal's adapt to there environment much like the norn have adapted to living in extreme cold there transformation are magical blessing by there totem spirits as seen when jora lost her powers due to jormags influence. The norn seem to share a common history with both humans and kodan it would seem let say sense the kodan live on the freezing oceans it safe to say they swam in the sea to hunt so being permanently bear formed is there adaptation to there home of choice seeing as all the think blubber and fur would keep them worm in freezing cold water's.
