Habib Loew has a new post on the official site announcing the removal of culling in the upcoming March 26th patch, as well as detailing new player rending options to keep your FPS intact.

If you’ve ever played World vs. World in a large group, you’ve probably noticed that there were some enemy players that you couldn’t see. That was an unfortunate side effect of a process called culling. I’m pleased to announce that in the upcoming patch on March 26, we’re going to turn culling off completely in WvW. This will make invisible enemies (except those using invisibility skills, of course) a thing of the past.

Under the new system, characters can be rendered in three different ways:
  • High resolution models - These are the high-res character models that you’re all already familiar with.
  • Lower resolution fallback models - These are the models that we’ve been using as placeholders in WvW while the hi-res models load. They differ depending on race and armor class, though human, sylvari, and norn share the same model.
  • Nameplates only - We don’t render the model at all and instead only show the nameplate for that character.
We’ve also added two new options to allow players to select how WvW characters are displayed:
  • WvW Character Limit - This controls how many of the reported characters render with a model and how many are rendered only with nameplates.
  • WvW Character Quality - This controls how many of the characters rendered with a model use the high resolution models and how many use the lower resolution fallback models.

I'm really interested to see what the change in culling does to the game. I hate culling, but there is a reason it is being used. I fear what the consequence may be. Hoepfully, ANet has a solution already worked out.

Sounds great, but seriously, this should've been in game from launch.

I'd like to know the details for the rest of the changes we're getting in this patch.  Been hanging for it.

The notion of not having to deal with culling anymore is amazing. Can't wait. ;)

No more culling. BUT WAIT, what is this?!?! Lag?!?! I'm hoping they fix culling WITHOUT increasing the lag.

I like the options they give, all the way down to just showing nameplates.   I'm looking forward to seeing how it works, if it does battles should certainly seem more epic.

It would be great if they eventually implement this in cities or all PvE zones.

That would depend on the player's computer as well. inb4 next WvW problem is melting CPUs.

[/quote]That would take months to do that, can you wait? :P Atleast they give us the time, when the next update is going to be released, the march one. :o

Sounds great. I'm happy they'll be allowing us to make adjustments on an individual basis with the new options rather than using this culling to try to solve everyone's problem. Some PCs can better handle things then others and we should be allowed to make adjustments accordingly. I really hope the system works correctly.

If this works as intended then finally players with decent computers will no longer suffer because Anet have been hand holding players with crap computers. Now we can all set WvW settings how we need and want them to be individually.

Was kinda silly those with high end pc's being forced into culling because of players without high end pc's...

Hopefully it all works out.

Well color me impressed, this threads been up for hours and nobody's thrown in some super negative twist on this good news. Good job :P
Really like how much control they are giving us with these options, can't wait to see WvW with this.

I'm slightly disappointed that this isn't also implemented for PvE. Especially with the crowded boss battles, it would be nice to actually see the people fighting besides you, instead of just a select few close-by.

If it's not in PvE in march I imagine it will be at some point. Making those ridiculous karka-style events semi playable has been repeatedly stated as one of their long-term goals.

So... how long will it take until these and the official forums will be full of whine about people lagging in WvW?

Sadly it will probably be the same people that whine about culling in the first place.

I for one have not had any problems with culling but I am happy that they remove if for the sake of those that actually had problems.

I'll probably be stuck with playing against NAMEPLATES exclusively ;)

But whatever, beats lag + phantom armies any day I guess.
