It's been a long few months, but Ellen Kiel will finally make good on the promise that led her to winning the Lion's Arch Council during the Cutthroat Politics update last August. In addition to the Thaumanova Reactor, the developers are using this opportunity to introduce and rework a few mechanics for Fractals in general. Once you've read through some of the changes below, you'll definitely want to check out the new Fractured trailer!

Unless you were on board with Evon Gnashblade, that is...

Update: Here is an article detailing some of the more specific changes to Fractals.

New Event
 • The Nightmare Continues: The Tower of Nightmares, which has occupied players for weeks, is headed for collapse, but the fight isn’t over yet. Players can continue their battle against the vile Toxic Alliance to destroy the foul structure and prevent its evil from spreading.
New Features
 • Three Fractals: In addition to illuminating the strange circumstances of the Thaumanova Reactor meltdown, players can experience two more historical events thanks to further Fractals research. The Molten Furnace Fractal allows players to relive the daring raids on the Molten Alliance facilities, while the treacherous Aetherblade Fractal has players infiltrating the Aetherblade’s old base of villainy.
 • Two Boss Fractals: The Jade Maw of the Solid Ocean Fractal is no longer the only challenge awaiting players when they make it to the end of each set of three fractals. Special boss encounters with the Aetherblade captain Mai Trin and the two Molten Alliance champions from the Molten Facility have been added to the rotation.
 • Agony Resist Updates: Developers are evolving the way Agony Resistance works on items, so players will now be able to collect drops granting Agony Resistance and combine those to continually increase their level of Agony Resistance.
 • Fractals of the Mists Leaderboards: Players soon will be able to earn the envy and adulation of friends and strangers thanks to new leaderboards. Players whose current personal reward level for the Fractals of the Mists is above 30 will be reset to 30 so the competition can begin in earnest.
 • Fractal Progression Changes: The difficulty curve in fractals levels 1-30 is being adjusted, and fractals beyond level 30 will have new, special challenges. Every fractal players enter with a fractal level above 30 will have a special Mistlock Instability which will add new difficulties to that level or change how it is played.
 • Obsidian Sanctum Update: Players will now be able to enter the Obsidian Sanctum, the Eternal Battlegrounds jumping puzzle, directly through the WvW menu. Additionally, a new arena space has been added for combat between opposing groups of players, and the Borderlands Bloodlust buff will no longer apply in the Obsidian Sanctum.
New Rewards
 • Fractal Reward Updates: In addition to earning daily fractal rewards like Empyreal Fragments, Fractal Relics and Pristine Fractal Relics at all levels, players also will earn a gold, or more, making the Fractals of the Mists more rewarding.
 • Fractal Tonic: A new, infinite tonic with the ability to transform players into any number of friends and foes from within the Mists awaits as a rare reward found within the Fractals of the Mists.
 • New Runes and Sigils: Players braving the dangers of the most difficult fractals will find their valor rewarded by a chance at new sigils and runes to adorn their gear.

Ah nice, some extra updates for the Fractals as well.

[s]And indeed, that fractal isn't one I recognize from the current rotation.
Might be even more new stuff coming soon then ^^[/s]

Ah wait, it looks quite a bit like the Mossman from the Swamp Fractal. Just much bigger...

I was referring to the crazy Ascalonian battle after that. Just copied the URL a bit too early ^^

Aha! You're right. I figured I had been dragged along to fractals enough times to see them all at least once. Guess I was wrong :P

I have to say, that trailer is a marvellous piece of craftmanship. Really well put together. [s]The one you don't recall seeing is just an more cineatic version of the Mossman encounter.[/s]

I actually pity the people who agonized their way up to 80 for absolutely nothing. What a grandios waste of time that must have been. It's a bit baffling that they'd put the new max-level for people starting over at 30 though. Why not make it 50 as people couldn't feasibly progress any further than 50 any way without doing the uneven ones? Simply escapes me.

"A gold" that's not exactly my idea of reward, to be honest. They need to get their reward system for fractals right, otherwise it's just one giant waste of time. I don't want to farm a place for petty runes and sigils, what is this madness? They clearly talk of new special challenges past 30 but the "rewards" they stupidly cut into 3 separate paragraphs of NOTHING desirable (for me, personally at least) is a bit baffling as well.

PS.: Poster is still bitter over the Abaddon Tragedy. :qq:

Can't wait for the new Fractals. And everyone getting reset to lvl 30! :P :P :P Now show your true abilities!

But then again I wish our Fractal personal level would be account-bound.

The precursor information is coming in early December, one of the Devs mentioned it:

EDIT: PERSONAL REWARD RANKS ARE GONNA BE ACCOUNT-BOUND. Yeah!

Well getting something that has a "high possibility to be pushed back" as early as this update would be quite weird.

I guess the reset down to 30 makes sense? ....kind of. I still think it's stupid. If they're gonna reset all my characters down to lvl30 atleast make fractal lvls account bound. :/

Completely agree with that.

[s]And what's up with that Agony Resist becoming like Luck nonsense? Sounds like a pure scheme to force people to grind those bloody fractals if they ever want to have 400 AR to continue 50+ or something[/s] -_-

I am a bit skeptic about that.

And I am very surprised the Ascended Armor crafting won't be in - thought that was a given at that point. Must have been my vivid imagination though.

Personally, I like it. Maybe it's just the way my mind looks at things, but at least this way I feel like I make *some* progress each time as opposed to having to save up a bunch of stuff to create an infusion to get some agony resist.

It upsets me for two reasons really:

1) Luck doesn't feel engaging, it's a chore and it's effects are marginally noticable if noticable at all.

2) I am waiting for the day they actually give those ♥♥♥♥ing ascended materials you got bombarbed with in Fractals a god damn purpose. But they shy away from "resources" the playership could have gotten already (which have no practical use but still were available) like the devil from holy water. Probably because they can't wrap that up in a grind-burito any more.

Of course it makes sense.
They are adding a leaderboard.
They are also increasing the difficulty for lvl 30+ Fractals.
Thus without a reset people would be able to be on top of the leaderboard without actually having completed the new difficulty, while newer players would need to complete higher difficulty fractals to get to the same level.

Looks like there's a new article up on the front page with more details on the fractal changes.
Your personal fractal difficulty and reward level is being made account-wide! Starting with the Fractured release, you can attempt high level fractals on a new character without needing to level up all over again.
I'll go ahead and add a link to the OP.

Good information in that artcile - account bound levels are great and the AR rework, while a hustle, is not as bad as Luck is - so I guess that's okay in my books.

If there's something worth playing fractals for in terms of rewards, I will play them - if not, I'll check the new Thermanova Reactor fractal out once or twice and call it another bi-week :D

"Completing a fractal will yield a repeatable chest that contains the following (this chest can be obtained any number of times per day):

Fractal Relics

Agony resist infusions

Character equipment (blue quality or higher)"
I honest to God don't get why they'd make it that way. I mean a Fractal takes 20-30 minutes according to their own claim and you have a rather high chance of getting blue quality rewards. And then they wonder why people feel like their game just doesn't reward you for actually playing it as supposed to mindlessly farm somewhere or spend your day flipping.

Give people a bloody yellow per fractal at least and it'd be a lot less horrible to wade through them.
