ArenaNet has a new blog post up on their main website detailing some of the plans they have for rewards in PvP combat modes. The changes range from match rewards, including gold and experience, along with achievements, gear that can be used in PvE, as well as an updated rewards system. A big trend in the article is blurring the line between PvP and PvE, much like the current state of World Vs World.

What does everybody think? Sounds interesting, no?

Sounds pretty damn good, didn't see that coming. Some guildies have the wolf rank, I'm happy for them. Maybe some of them are motivated to go for the tiger now, and I'd be glad to help.

Wow, rather nice plans there, and stuff coming as early as the 10th is very suprising.
Might start going back into some sPvP again with this.

Interesting. Not sure I'm fond of the merge between PvE and PvP, as all PvE skins are fairly easy to acquire. Also kind of bummed about getting rid of the rank system. It's cool that we might be able to directly purchase levels in the future, but at the same time the potential removal of glory seems contradictory, since buying tomes of knowledge was said to require glory and gold. Guess we'll just see what happens! xP

Interesting, I wonder how much gold you'll get per match. Also, new healing skills? Never asked for these. :P

You mean I can earn gold in sPvP so I can finally buy custom arena tokens? Might just come back to this game. Oh, wait, there's still only one game mode. Never mind.

Most of it looks good, but this....

Also in this update, the Skills and Balance team will introduce new healing skills to the game. To acquire new skills, in both PvP and PvE, players will need to spend skill points to unlock them.  Unlocking the skill unlocks it for all parts of the game. Going forward newly added skills will require skill points. Existing skills will remain unlocked for PvP.

... is bull.

Did we not learn our lesson in GW1? How painful it was pulling newbies into organized PvP when they didn't even have the right skills to start learning on? No it's not going to be a big deal in this update, particularly for people who've been playing for a while. But as new skills keep getting added, it's eventually going to become an issue for new players. How is this worth sinking a small fraction of experienced player's surplus hundreds of skill points?

In other news, I'm hoping that eventually 1) major tournaments will offer some major coin or something sellable for it, and 2) we get legendary or other prestige armors. The alternate skins is a significant barrier to newbies and is right to get rid of, but I'd still like top players to have something to show.

PvP is black or white. You either do it, or you don't. There is no middle ground. There is no such thing as a casual PvP'er.

No, that's not sarcasm. That's brutal, honest truth. Anyone who even thinks said rewards will entice people to try PvP will systematically be abused into knowing how drastically one type of play can be to another.

Then again, what do I know!? I never PvP!

Weird article of theirs. Somehow reading through that, there isn't really anything I am going like "Finally! That will make spvp awesome" or anything. It's just "Aha..alright.."

Odd blog post to be honest.

GW2 is a shit PvP game: not only does it suffer from technical issues (things like camera control, map design or an absolutely insane amount of effects), it's also really shallow (the classes are really poorly designed with A.Net  focusing on "balancing" things that don't really deserve to be in the game). As such, I don't ever see it turning into a PvPers' game.
With that in mind, I find this preview to be inspired: it shows that A.Net finally accepted that their PvP isn't meant to be played by PvPers, but rather PvErs. There's absolutely nothing here that makes GW2 into a better PvP game, what it does make it into is a game that is more appealing to AP grinders. And given how there's very little reason to play GW2 outside of grinding APs, that's a pretty smart decision. In this light, decisions like getting rid of UAX (which is one of the best rules for a PvP game) make complete sense: progression, the defining element of PvE, is now the name of the game.

This certainly means that GW2 will never be a good PvP game, but it does mean that it's going to be alive, because it finally started catering to the people that are actually playing it.

As has been pointed out, this blog post is essentially just saying there'll be more PvE rewards through SPvP.

Certainly one way to get more people into it...Maybe until they overhaul it entirely I'll think about stepping foot in there again, but this won't cut it.

Why they went with heal skills first.
The reason we went with heal skills first is that we actually believe this is the highest impact area for build diversity.
1) it is a small pool to begin with so adding to it increases choice by a large %
2) it sees a lot of use
3) it heals you which is pretty important
As time goes on we will also introduce traits, utilities, elites, and potentially other stuff.

Yay for the roadmap, but why remove the current ranks?  Why not add divisions like Halo:Reach did, in which your rank finishes turns bronze, silver, gold, or orriachulum depending on your division?

Those ppl will still have the finisher..
And even better, after they remove the ranks, they're sure that nobody else will still get them, which means their finisher will get rarer and rarer over time.
I can only imagine the joy of the guys who got shark and higher...
In 2-3 years (if they still play then) those will be an amazing memory to have (and show of with :P)

Well, better get myself back into pvp and try to hold my leaderboard position for a week. Slightly miffed that I won't be able to get higher end finishers.

I could be considered a casual pvper if casual means playing only occasionally with no real drive to compete. I do it to test new weapon/build configurations or to help learn a profession. The current rewards are definitely not a draw - with the exception of some titles. It has no impact on pve - I gain no abilities or usable boons or weapon skins.

If the update does mean pvp rewards will be of some use in pve I def. think more people will be trying out pvp! Hell a lot of folks who hated wvw went on to do it for the title. I think it's possible.

Considering that this will take months to roll out and sPvP has been dead for quite some time, I'm going to say too little too late. It would have been nice had these things been available from the beginning. What kills me the most is the constant use of the "carrot on the stock" strategy to try and re-energize areas of the game. How about, you know, making those things better as well?

Although, I do applaud them for finally realizing that healing and trinity-esque balance is important for PvP. Unfortunately, I don't see this making a difference as a few random healing skills aren't going to patch the large broken foundation upon which combat has been created in this game.

Have they announced Guild Wars 3 yet so we can look forward to ANet finally getting back to the kind of epic PvP they had when Prophecies was first released?

I went through that post thinking: ok, ok, well, ohh cool level ups for glory so I can get my mesmer to 80 fast, ok, ok, uh PvE-PvP merge? omg, ok, ok, ok, no ranks anymore? Well.

I think PvP will now even more targeted at casuals and PvEers and not PvPers. It's sad but I don't really care since PvP in gw2 is beyond repairable anyways.

You never were in gw2 pvp. There are 99,9% bad players. Bad compared to me who doesn't even care which build to run in spvp or don't playing pvp more often than 1 time in a few month. It's horrible but a really good place for casuals to just jump in and feel good because they will somehow "rock" or be on par with everyone else from the get go.
