Developer quotes outline Living Story season two

Some new quotes from an Arenanet developer are surfacing on fansites and on the Guild Wars 2 reddit.  The developers sheds some light on some of the new features that can be expected in the next Living Story season.  It has been confirmed, for example, that all Living Story content from season 2 will be permanent, and that an entire in-studio team is working on end game gear progression.

There is no release date as of now for the second season of the Living Story.

Say no more - this was a needed and absolute good change!

Permanent yay! End game gear progression? Err what? For Guild Wars 2? This is finally getting to a point where it's not even funny nor sad anymore. It's downright tragic.

"an" not "the"

Could be 3 people for all we know.

An in-studio team can be from 1 to 100 people.  Not the entire team.

I read that wrong and forgot to cut the part with the 300 hundred people alongside with my other crap I wrote. Cut the 300 people part. "Tragic" was actually meant to focus on the word progression.

Wait, gear progression, really? I finally got full ascended on one char (for WvW) and they are thinking of adding more? How come this is better than adding horizontal progression? Legendaries (new types and more of existing ones), craftable armor skins maybe, precursor acquisition, new weapon classes...
There are tons of things they could work on, and they decide that gear progression is better. WHY? It makes no sense...
How about new races/professions, new zones, housing/guild halls, GvG, sPVP modes/maps ?

I love GW2, but sometimes i read stuff like that and i think: "Are this guys idiots?"

[EDIT:] In truth, the guy/girl said nothing about if it is vertical or horizontal, but it sounded that way when reading it. I sincerely hope i was wrong and misunderstood this gear progression thing.

Who says it isn't?  They only say gear progression... it could be like the skins found in the Balthazar reward track for PvP.

The developers sure are talking about a lot of stuff that aren't the issues created by their megaservers.

Well, adding new weapon skins isn't adding gear progression. The word progression is significant.

I'm taking this with a grain a salt. The person has an Anet tag but it's not an official quote, just talking with the public. He is just a grunt and i'll hold my breath till i see something concrete. Things might change later.

The main complaint is that guilds needs to party up and taxi their members into their shard.  That's hardly pretty much the biggest issue, and such a minor issue that it's not worth putting any comments into.  If they care about it, they already have it lined up for their next major release.

He has a developer tag, and is one of the main figures in the release team (works on the technical side).  You can see in one of the images on the reddit link that he did not answer some questions as people "get mad when we mention things and they are not done."  Thus, it can be implied that the thing he did talk about are already lined up and approved for incoming release.

The Living Story has only existed for a little over one year, to be fair.

They've been very clear that they are committed to ongoing vertical progression.  Any horizontal progression will be in addition, not a replacement for, vertical progression.

Didn't they say there won't be a tier above Ascended any time soon? The only thing that's really left stat-wise is 500 Jewelcrafting (which, people assume, will be for higher quality infusions) and legendary armor / new legendary weapons and the latter is just cosmetic. (Unless that's what you meant)

Gear progression is a must since generally speaking GW2 doesn`t have "endgame" like other MMO`s (and suffers for it) !
While i don`t mind new gear progression i just pray they don`t implement it as another "DO IT YOURSELF/CRAFT" thingy this game already has to much meaningless crafting.....we need more dungeons, more maps and drops to make this "progression" kind of fun and worthwhile to do !!!

Yes.  No tier above Ascended, but there will be ongoing, shallow progression.  There's the possibility of higher quality infusions, as well as higher quality runes and sigils.

The last word we've had on level cap is that they have always expected to raise level cap some day.  That means they can start the next cycle of vertical progression with masterwork quality level 90 gear, and work back through the tiers again.  In saying "no tiers beyond Ascended" when people were freaking out about vertical progression ArenaNet gave us a response that could make people feel better while still leaving plenty of room open to continue VP.

From the AMA he did when things blew up from the initial announcement that Ascended would be added.

And to top it all off, "no tier beyond Asended" is a statement that they've been very careful to qualify.  You'll see it in that AMA with Chris, as well as the interviews given by Colin where he says he hopes there won't be a gear grind, and that no gear tier will be added any time in 2013.  They've gotten very good at leaving themselves plenty of wriggle room.

Really good post. A lot of facts about anets design philosophy regarding gear progression in gw2 was made clear back then in that ama. In addition to that: Anet said a lot of things and made an 180 turn sometime later. You can't really give anything on comments from anet that aren't direct announcements.

I'll take that end-game gear statement to mean that they realize there are issues with the end-game gear and that they have a team focused on trying to fix them.

I have a friend who loves crafting in MMOs, does them in every MMO he plays, and after seeing what's needed in GW2 he's decided not to attempt crafting Ascended gear.    I despise MMO crafting, on the other hand, but still I started to try to make the effort.   That was a mistake.   For now I'm just going to wait and see what they can do to improve things, though I'm still robotically collecting crafting mats.
