Buy Custom Arenas with Gold!

Arenanet have announced that, starting 17 June 2014, players can purchase custom sPVP arenas with gold instead of gems.

We’re pleased to announce that from June 17 onward, you’ll be able to buy custom arenas with gold instead of gems!

We have always seen custom Arenas as an important tool for bringing the PvP community together. This change will make it much easier for groups of players to pool their resources and work together to create and maintain a custom arena.

In the Heart of the Mists, you’ll find a new vendor called The Arena Vendor who will offer custom arena starter kits for 200 gold and time tokens for 2 gold.

Remember that you can use a custom arena time token on any custom arena that you are playing in, regardless of who owns that arena. If there’s a custom arena that you really enjoy or call home, you can support that arena and its owner by adding time to it!

I must say, the original starting price of 200 gold is insane (it's easier to transfer gems and then buy it, if the price is still 1000 gems, or about 110 gold on average), but the price of 2 gold for time tokens is awesome!

Yep, I agree, 2g is fairly earnable just by playing pvp for a bit as well which is nice.

I'd say the initial cost really depends on how many people are looking to do this (I've never used the custom arena's, so don't know how they work) - like if you take a guild of 100 people who want to have a guild custom arena... that's only 2g each person. And 2g is easily affordable. 10 person guild/group? That's still only 20g each... which should still be affordable.

Yes, if each person wants to buy the starter kit... then 200g is an insane amount. However, the more people that toss in gold for 1 person to buy, the cheaper it gets. I would say this is aimed at groups/guilds wanting to do their own custom PvP match's and such, so 200g between many people shouldn't be that big of a deal.

PvP guilds rarely have numbers to that extent. You might have a main team, a secondary team and a couple subs. PvP guilds with no structured regular team tend to fall into not representing and general dissarray.

It'd be okay for wvw guilds, although honestly I've not seen many which can work without the hammertrain mentality.
