ArenaNet has just posted details on their policies and technologies that they have implemented in regards to regions and world choice. Here are some highlights:
Purchasing & Playing
There will be 3 major regional designations for the release of Guild Wars 2:
- Europe: Defined as Western Europe and Eastern Europe. Players in these regions connect to the European datacenter.
- North America: Defined as Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Players in these regions connect to the North American datacenter.
- Other: All countries not already listed above will connect to the North American datacenter.
Choose Your World
Quote
At launch, players will be able to transfer between worlds freely. However, once server populations have largely settled and stabilized, world transfers will be restricted to once a week and cost a variable amount of gems based on the population of the world being transferred to.
In time, we’ll also introduce free “guesting,” which will allow players to visit other worlds as guests as long as they have friends on those worlds. This feature will be free, but guest players will not be able to enter World vs. World, and the Power of the Mists bonuses from their home world will continue to apply to their characters.

Choose Your Language
Quote
Lastly, we’re making it easy to switch between any of our supported languages (English, French, German, and Spanish).
When you install Guild Wars 2, the client matches the language your operating system is set to. If you wish to play in a different language after installation, you can change languages in the Guild Wars 2 launcher and the corresponding audio language files will be downloaded and installed. Changing the language of the in-game text is also available to you at any time by going to the in-game options menu.

I Wish People would have a little more confidence that A-Net truely wants to treat their Player base right.

Now can we All stop Whining about region lock!!!! Once you register in the right region you are free to move around the world unrestricted.

freely switching between servers at launch has absolutely nothing to do with region lock.

He isn't talking about servers, he's talking about the actual world, the one that doesn't exist solely on your computer screen
Guesting is like Guild Halls. Something they would have like to have at launch but just unable to get to. I Feel guesting will be one of the first patches shortly after a successful launch. Once they get Launch out of the way they can start adding some bells and whistles.

I travel frequently. Will I be able to play Guild Wars 2?
Yes. The one-time verification system simply confirms that you have purchased the correct version of the game for your area of the world. Once that has been confirmed, you may play from any location you desire.

However, the one thing mentioned that does get me down is this:

What is home world “guesting?”
Guesting on a Home World
Sometime after the release of Guild Wars 2, we will introduce free "guesting,” where players will be able to visit other worlds as guests as long as they have friends on those worlds. This feature will be free, but guest players will not be able to enter world-versus-world battles. In addition, the Power of the Mists bonuses from their home world will continue to apply to their characters.

So, I have to already know someone on another world to go play there? Bummer! I was really hoping for more open servers, on the order of GW1's districts. I won't be able to meet as many new friends on other servers as is and won't as often be able to get away from the hustle and bustle of the more heavily populated server that my guild has chosen.

It's not that hard to have a "friend". Just ask a random dude to put you on his friend list and ta-da, you can go on his server ^^

I think this also removes all the complaints about big guilds not being able to all roll on the same server. If the server you picked is full, just pick a smaller one and have everyone transfer there for free.

seems to me loads of people can stop panic about being with their guilds, as they clearly say here they will only make it cost gems and be restricted when the server pops have are more stable... no timeframe given so no worries

Looking at this list - http://en.support.gu...tail/a_id/9183# how come Ukraine, Russia and other former USSR countries (minus the Baltic states) are listed under other, and not Europe?
I am guessing it has to do with the retailers. Since you can choose any region at launch to play from at launch it should have no effect on your play. https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/a-world-of-choice-the-regions-of-guild-wars-2/

Ahh, the magic of the forums! Working around the system since...
Don't get me wrong, I will attempt to open up my options as much as possible in this manner. The main trouble to me is that it feels like an inconvenience in-game. It's easy to get around the restriction, but why must I do that when everything else is set-up to be so open? Why have such a restriction in the first place with such a large loophole?

Why make piracy illegal when the people that want to download illegally still will? It acts like a threshold which will keep some semblance of order. Most people will never have the need to guest on a server in which they don't have friends.

So wait...lemme get this straight...instead of connecting to EU servers, the Russians & friends are instead connecting to the NA datacenters...makes sense lol.
