Guild Wars 2 hits 400,000 concurrent users before launch
Massively, a sister-site of Joystiq, claims that information from Arenanet and NCsoft indicates at more than 400 thousand players playing the game before the official launch. More than one million copies were pre-purchased, too, excluding final day sales.
Quote
President and co-founder of ArenaNet Mike O'Brien stated, "This is the culmination of a five-year journey and to be greeted by this level of enthusiasm by our fans is truly amazing. But really our work is just beginning. Now our focus is shifting to building on this living world we've delivered, continuously refining our game and improving services to ensure our players have the best possible experience."

I really do hope there are more purchases, Arenanet deserve it.

I think it's great, and perhaps some people are purposely holding out.

According to that article, the 1 million purchases does not count pre-orders (only pre-purchases), which likely means it doesn't count day 1 purchases either. That number should be a significant amount higher today (IMO).

Umm, that's the number of pre-purchases, hence the the title '400,000 concurrent users before launch'. I doubt it includes pre-orders, but it definitely doesn't include people who bought the game today. I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in the millions.

Although, I'm hoping they get the servers fixed soon, it doesn't look good for a launch day when the servers go down for an extended period. People tend to focus on the negatives rather than the positives, so even an hour of downtime at launch, will stick in people's minds in the future and breed nothing but bad thoughts and feelings.

You are assuming he meant the login troubles today. We had login troubles at the start of headstart as well. And yes, if it was only 400,000 players causing that amount of problems, that is pretty bad.

I think some people here need to understand the definition of concurrent. That means they hit 400k people playing at the same exact time. They still have well over 1 million players just from pre-PURCHASE. Not including day 1 buyers, not including pre-ORDERS. I wouldn't be surprised if they hit 4 million in the first month.
4 million might be a bit much but yes 400K concurrent means at the same time. Login problems were unfortunate and indeed Anet did plenty of prep with several stress tests and BWE's not sure what happened there. However, they have an excellent game here. There is a lot to like and its pulled me in exactly how I hoped it would.
Congrats to them on the release.

SWTOR had over 1,5 mil players the first week and i had no problem to login. Anet knew exactly how many players that would login on saturday and still failed to deliver. they had problems for over 9h on saturday with login. All this testing was for nothing it's just sad

People here don't get the thing: The article is about: 400k people played SIMULTANEOUSLY and 1mil bought it. Don't expect the first number to ever reach 400k again.

At least, not with only 1 million purchases.
