NCsoft has just announced that Guild Wars 2 has sold over two million units, from reopening sales of the game after its short hiatus from the official store.

Quote

"Reactions from around the world justified the time and care we put into developing Guild Wars 2 and making it into the game it is today," said Mike O'Brien, president and co-founder of ArenaNet. "And this is only the beginning. We're continually fine-tuning the game to deliver the polished experience that our players expect, and we’re already working on new adventures and experiences to introduce into this truly dynamic online world."

I saw that -but I stil find it akward when sites mention parts of stuff that they have from a source that you can't find on the net. I quess its how i works when sites get press release stuff to share, until the parent compagny (NC-soft) actual put it up for comparison. I think i have seen the whole press release on the subjeckt now - but how would I actual know ?

Amazing how within one month of the release, the game has more than the original Guild Wars series (it took GW1 more than 2 years to reach 2 million sales for one campaign).  Excellent, much deserved!

Looks like they will easily thrash my prediction of 3.5 million within 6 months of launch.

If they keep going at this rate they will beat GW1's and expansion sales over 7 years in just one year. That would be awesome.

These numbers of 3 million from about 1.5 yrs from Guild Wars Launch.

I read somewhere they hit 7 million but can't remember where, but here is source showing over 6.5 million back in 2010.

Only the beginning, indeed. Long way to go guys, keep the work up! You're yet to breach 3 million sales by the "conservative" estimates.

So I wonder how this compares to WoW sales. Just curious. Or other MMOs like The Secret World or The Old Republic.

Problem is to compare them you have to take subscriptions out of the equation, you have to go by actual game sales of each of the games to compare. You also have to look at actual concurrent online members in 6 months and one year's time.

I think the best game to compare GW2 success is from Guild Wars 1, if GW2 beats 6.5-7million copies in the first year or even first 2 years then it's a definitive success.

It gets a little iffy comparing sub games to b2p games, as they appeal to different folks. I have people in my guild that would never pay a monthly fee for any game, no matter how great - they just don't see the point. That being said I'd like to see a chart comparing box sales nonetheless- if only to sate my own curiosity.

Like Eon said, it's not that easy to compare. With WoW you also have to factor in it's 93-year running time. Swtor isn't even worth mentioning or comparing to as Swtor was one of the worst games I've played in the last 10 years, and The Secret World is a bit more of a niche audience and less main-stream than GW2, resulting in less sales (that doesn't mean it's any less successful though).

That said, the fact that GW2 has sold 2 million units in such a short time (especially considering the week/week-and-a-half long freeze on digital sales) with very little actual marketing is phenomenal. The game isn't perfect, but for having JUST been released it's damn close. I'm highly pessimistic, but I think Anet deserve this.

Grats Anet!

Just curious, would these numbers include Pre-orders and retail sales, through third party sellers (amazon etc), or did this just equate the amount sold through the online official store?
While this announcement is great (two weeks and 2 million sold? thats amazing), it's annoyingly lacking detail :P

7 million i believe combined.

Anyway, congrats to Anet and the game. Most can only dream of 2 million.

and i do think folks shouldn't compare this to any other mmo good or bad because the model guild wars follows i unique to them. Don't really know too many mmo's with this business model. Though i do wonder why more games aren't like this, as a middle ground kind of area.

Call it morbid curiosity, but I still just want to know how the various numbers stack up, too. Not to crow from the heavens that so and so is king, I'm just interested to know.

Also this:
