Arena Net designers Jon Peters and Isaiah Cartwright unveil the new guardian profession in Guild Wars 2,
as well as discuss more details on the game and how it will differ from the original Guild Wars.

inb4: Don't get too excited about the image caption that says "Guild Wars 2 will launch later this year." It's far from an official confirmation.

Another example is a focus skill called ray of judgment. You can target a group of enemies with this skill, which works a bit like a chain lightning type of effect that bounces between different targets. But this spell can also grant protective bonuses to any allies in the area, so you might even want to toss this skill into a fight where there are some allies in there too.

Also, skills that are used with one single weapon are versatile for the guardian. While some other professions may have to swap out entire weapon sets to get the most out of their skills, the guardian can operate pretty smoothly without as much swapping.

In before "EZ Mode Guardian". :p

I'm j/k.

Something that concerned me though.

Jon Peters said:

And just to add some other examples…everyone has abilities along these lines. If you take a warrior and a guardian, and you need to defend a teammate who's being attacked, a guardian can place a ward on the ground, which is basically a line on the ground that prevents enemies from crossing. A warrior, on the other hand, might just walk up to the enemy, pull out his hammer and send the enemy flying or knock it down. So, the warrior's a much more brute-force class, while the guardian is more about tactically controlling the battlefield.

So Guardians place a ward on the ground to protect an ally...Warriors can knock them down or back. Okay, I can see that dichotomy...if it weren't for the fact that I knew Guardians could ALSO knock them down or back (as shown in the skill vids). Maybe they're talking about the AoE version?

This interview is actually very illuminating as to how they see the Guardian, plus their view on the gameplay.

For instance:

Quote

Those are the two areas where he can really contribute (control and support -V), though he's not necessarily the best damage dealer. He is, however, one of our top-tier support characters.

Thanks for the link. I particularly like this quote:

Quote

One of the things that bugs us a lot about games like this is, for instance, if Isaiah, three of our friends, and I all like playing warriors, we shouldn't have to stop and have one of us create a different character because we needed that role in the party

I can't wait to play with friends and not have to worry about class composition. This will lead to some fun times. No matter what game I play, I almost always find the "non-standard" groups to be the most fun.

This is by the far the best interview. I like hearing their design goals and choices. Wish they gave more examples, but good stuff.

So, certain class will have clear advantage over other classes on certain roles. I can already see ppl doing things like "Group LF1M: Support Guardian", Or "Group LFM DPS, no Guardian".

They're sticking with their talking points, but I want to see gameplay. A good setup would be show 10 minutes of a dungeon with 2 different groups. One group is a very odd mix like 3 ranger, 2 necro. The other group is more 'traditional', i.e. a warrior, 2 guardian, and 2 eles. I mean it's one thing to talk all this stuff up, but they have not once really showed it in a true group gameplay setting.

Wards only block movements. :) Not attacks. Melee, range and magic can all get through (though the melee can only reach as far as the weapon reaches Lol)

Did you guys read past the line that said the guardian can use a taunt-like skill? Coz that's extremely big news imo. And it really dissapoints me.

Very nice way to close the interview. Particular enjoyed the 'we know people are worried groups are going to require this profession in groups - but we've built it from that ground up to make sure thats not the case' bit.

I know those are just words, but they are reasuring.

Edit:
Wait whats this about taunting?? Oo

The original Guild Wars was a hack-and-slash action role-playing game..

That's a very poor opener for a review article if you ask me. GW is not a hack and slash.

Great Interview. I think it all comes down to the gap between role efficiency. As long as a team doesn't have to struggle with a Warrior, for example, on support, and the Guardian on damage, then hopefully professions won't be pigeon-holed.

The article kinda told me that the guardian is needed. Maybe not with friends and guilds etc. But more in high-end. It's not what i hoped :( and it's just speculation at this point. Don't go apeshit on me now...

But some of his abilities seem extremely strong/handy/imba meh.

Yet they tell us we shouldn't worry. I rly need to play this game and see it myself now haha.

Great interview.

I suspect these passages needs to be displayed in one of those notice windows on GW2Guru, for the next few days at least: :D

C: I'd say that the guardian is one of the professions we've really tried to focus on as a support profession. I know a lot of people are concerned that we've made a character that's going to be required for a successful adventuring party, but from the ground up, we've been making sure that isn't the case. You don't need to have this character in every group, but it's still an amazing, fun character. And there are plenty of people here at the office who love playing it.

JP: Yeah. You look at this character with heavy armor and glowing blue light around him, and you might think that Arena Net just completely went back on what it said about no specific healer roles, no specific tank roles, and so on. But it's just not true. The combat system is where that assumption breaks down since the way the guardian plays is really going to come down to player preference. This character, like all of Guild Wars 2's other characters, can do a little bit of everything. He may appeal to a certain type of player, but ultimately, the game is all about finding the players you want to play with--not the professions you want to play with.

It is easy to say stuff. But when it comes hard content when Maximum group efficiency is absolutely necessary, the best support class in the game will become a required class.
It just like in wow, you can steam roll regular dungeons with 1 healer+4dps or even just 5dps, nothing is required. But that wont work when it comes to heroic dungeon and raid.
