Holy cow... picked the right time for a lunch break! Reeeeading now!

EDIT: Excellent. It seems they're going for quality over quantity. Plus, it's higher end content with a great lore tie in. Sounds. A-mazing.

Also, ^*#@in' Ascalon Catacombs baby!

At the time of this writing, we have eight dungeons in Tyria.

I don't know if this was known already, but 8 is...a small number. Since it's not definitive, I hope there are a few more available at release!

We have known for a while that there would be eight.  What we did not know is that they skew toward higher levels.  I (and other people, perhaps) had assumed that with eight dungeons and 80 levels, they would be tiered, like how other games have pvp for levels 11-20, 21-30, etc.

"...they may run the explorable versions as many times as they want, increasing the quantity of armor and weapons that are available from that dungeon"

Am I reading this right, in that the more times you run the dungeon, it unlocks more items?

My previous understanding was that you may have to run it multiple times if you want to collect all the pieces, but that you would have the full selection to choose from at each run.

Not a big deal or anything, just curious.

Dungeons will change somewhat to tell more of the story IIRC, and allow you to get your armor/weapon sets.

So, when we say that there are currently eight dungeons, we really mean there are thirty-two dungeons, as each dungeon has a story version and three explorable versions.

There it is! In writing, the reason to not complain about 'having only 8 dungeons at launch'

GW2 orgasm today, fellow Gurus as well?

Actually they told us awhile back that the first dungeon didn't occur until after level 30, around the time Lion's Arch was revealed.  That's the point at which the storyline brings the races together.

Eight dungeons, but explorable mode gives players multiple ways to run the dungeon. The way it was explained to us was that the 8 dungeons are really 32 dungeons (one story mode, and three different paths you can take in explorable mode). Now, whether you buy that or not...that's up to you.

That's cool and what not I get that dungeons at present are meant for groups but will there ever be any solo-dungeons or solo instances that are like dungeons other than the personal story?
Since last I checked once we do something in our personal story/story mode we can never go back and do it again, doesn't that mean once the story stuff is done, solo possibilities are over?

I thought they said somewhere you can redo story-mode in dungeons to get the full gear set

So Solo attempts are limited to the initial story dungeon.

Or wait I suppose they were saying that dungeons are intended for groups, but you don't need a group to enter?
Would challenge myself by entering a group dungeon and seeing how far I can get.

We've also brought the dynamic event system into the dungeons. Even in story or explorable modes, the dungeon has bonus events that can be triggered by player actions, by location, or even by random chance. Even when you're adventuring again in the same dungeon and making the same choices, you can get a different gaming experience as a result of these bonus events.

Yes dungeon 24/7! Nah just kidding but pretty awesome that you can help friends with a dungeon with exactly the same choices and still find something new! :D

(That ultimate step? Well, we don't expect you to fight an Elder Dragon all by your lonesome.)

Even though we already knew about it reading this made me orgasm a lil' bit.

Nice read. I actually didn't get bored reading this one which is a step in the right direction by all means!

Running dungeons doesn't affect your advancement along your personal story line, and you can reach the penultimate step in the story without setting foot in a single dungeon instance. (That ultimate step? Well, we don't expect you to fight an Elder Dragon all by your lonesome.)

Did they just imply we're gonna fight the Dragons in dungeons?

They said without touching a dungeon, so i dont think so.
Fighting one of them in a dungeon would be hella scary though :zip:
Theres also a video showing a battle with one of the lieutenants
There were atleast 20+ people there, so id assume itd take about the same if not more for the actual thing.

I was trying to get my head around that part as well but I think it may have been maybe just a little miss-phrased.

All this new info at once is hard on the tummy, I am so hungry but can't tear myself away from the pc.

"Welcome to the dungeons." indeed :qq::qq::qq:

and that somehow brought me here . . . :surprised:

Seriously anet/ncsoft/whoever.... just take my money for the collector's edition now. Take my xbox, my wii, and all my other pc games while you're at it. I'm entirely sold.

One of my favorite thoughts from today- Me and 4 friends all deck out in full sets of armor from a given dungeon (using transmutation stones to get our favorite stats with them), and then we all use the dye system to go power ranger color schemes on our matching outfits. We always did this in halo with our emblems (identical everything except for primary color) and just dressing like a team makes us feel more like a team.

gosh, what an avalanche of info! i seriously can't wait to do these dungeons...i was a serious dungeon hound in gw1 and these have pushed epic off the charts...and i so appreciate that they are complex, are related to your story in the first run through and then are thoroughly repeatable, with varying paths, events, encounters and of course bosses, my first true obsession in gw1...i wonder if these bosses drop epic loot themselves or just the tokens we use to exchange for weapons and armor...god i am so psyched for this...thanks anet for the awesome article and sick content!

I knew today was going to be heavy on info and stuff, but it's just starting and already I can feel my heart swelling inside my chest. Is it possible to actually, truly fall madly in love with a piece of virtual software? I'm beginning to think it is.

I am sincerely stoked about the dungeons in GW2. From the rewards, to combat it all sounds like one of the best parts of the game. I hope they borrow a lil bit from 'Ocarina of Time's' underwater dungeon :) That is my all time fave dungeon in a game.

I was always partial to the one with the pirate ship myself.  But I love that ANet is taking the multi-player aspect and merging it with the greater immersion achieved by single player RPGs.  They also talked about puzzles in the past, which has that Zelda vibe, too.

In our travels we fought a slew of ghosts, many of whom made me laugh out loud because they are true Guild Wars 1 characters.  There was a monk slinging Ray of Judgement — and I can’t really complain, I guess we sort of deserve that for the way we are currently abusing that skill.  I can confirm that there are mesmers in Guild Wars 2.  Unfortunately they’re not playable because they are dead mesmers in ghost form nailing me with Blackout.  Still.  Mesmers.
