I'm gonna watch this. I'm gonna watch this as I adjust my monocle and drink a cup of tea like a boss. And then I shall discuss, in minute detail, the strategies and skills of the players of each team with my colleagues  - in a polite and totally civil manner.

...

It's been a while since I left the DOTA scene, but upon hearing of this, I could never believe how unready my body was. I'm seeing a lot of familiar clan names there, some are even merged clans from former top ones. And some clans even reverted back to their original names, probably for this event - hopefully all teams would be able to participate in the compe.

And 1mil USD? Whoa, that's a lot of pressure.

Anyway I'll just leave this here:

So you mere mortals can tremble and weep upon witnessing gods playing games.

I love valve and all, but having them compete with Anet on the Gamescom floor for attention...GW2 will really have to pull off something amazing to get the attention of the people who haven't already had gw2 on their radar. :(  (Although for me, as a fan of both companies, gamescon is going to be double awesome.)

Plus they are both going to have focus on pvp, so some comparisons are definitelpy going to arise (at least, in how the e-sport aspect holds up.)

You're fresh out of /v/ my good man, I too was in that thread.

Anyway, someone said the entire prize pool was something like 1.6m? The entire 1m was going to the winners?

We esports now.

GW2 will have a broadcast of GvGs too (or whatever format of PvP). Anet will play against some skilled guilds from GW1.

^ Yes the Warcraft 3 mod that somehow became more popular than its mother game. Sort of like how it went for Counter-Strike.

Yeah. Why watch when you can play?

Still, DotA really is bad. Not as bad as many other games, but not particularly good. The basic idea is decent I guess, but the execution isn't, it could be done much better.

The thing I find most annoying about DoTA is there were some pretty clearly better designed map mods out there that where far more inventive with hero design yet DoTA still always stole the thunder of everyone of those map mods.

But anyways I am at a moot point with DoTA 2, first off the name is awful and should be called "Defense of the Ancients 2" at the very least. I also would like to know if it is going to take the HoN route of copy pasting heroes or the LoL route of being an entirely different line up of heroes, mechanics, and so on.

I am also enjoying HoN now since it went free 2 play and it would be a damn shame to see the game killed because of Valve.

Leave it to valve to say "Whats a good marketing strategy? Advertise the game with a massive cash reward to those who play!"

Certainly gets eyes turned in their direction at least.

That is huge, I'm looking forward to this, not as much as I am for the Guild Wars 2 Structured PvP match, since I want to play this one a lot, but 1million, woah.

The name is fine. It's a revisit to the mod. The whole MobA game type took off from DotA, and people know it as dota, not as the words behind the acronym. Makes sense to me.

I hope it's a mix of HoN/LoL style, as I never played or wanted to play DotA, HoN or LoL, but I'd like to see old stuff and what awesome things Valve is capable of making. Let's just hope they don't balance like they do TF2.

Honestly, I doubt this. When the articles about Icefrog going around trying to sell DotA2 the thing that came up every time was the part of the deal was changing nothing. DotA2 was to be a full 1-to-1 port of the gameplay, including artifacts in the Warcraft 3 game engine that were heavily exploited. DotA2 is shaping up to be nothing other than a upgrade to the graphics engine, and some ancillary services.

Oh god what happened!

Then again, Valve will need to do quite a bit to get their game out. Already there are so many people who have invested heavily in LoL and HoN. They are going to have to do everything in their power to make DOTA2 look as fantastic as possible.

1mil dollar championships are a start.
