I was actually pretty enthused with the story this time around. Malthael was a lot more menacing than Diablo or Azmodan, with their constant hokey taunts pointed in your general direction. I also found his reasoning good from an absoloutist perspective that I would expect an angel to hold. And his solution with the Soulstone is as sinister as it is sensible for him to do. Everything was decently presented and narratively relavant. My biggest quibble is the piest broken off the soulstone, but that is relatively small.

It is actually quite interesting that they have finally made one of the Angels a main villian as well. Seeing as they are in many cases worse than the Demons in the Diablo world.

For reference read the Sin Wars trilogy ^^

Crusaders are pretty neat so far. Skills are fun, and their "beafiness" is a bit more active; they don't have the inherent damage reduction that barbs and monks have. On top of that they have a fantastic aesthetic.

Speaking of aesthetics, the transmog system is delicious. All the skins I have across all my characters are usuable at the earliest level, provided you've trained the Mystic up a notch. The only bummer is unlocking her after 60, so newcomers wont get to her for awhile.

Still awesome, though. Now I can deck myself out in the solid-looking - and conveniently cheap! - low-level skins the whole way through. Solid and open-ended appearance customization is a sure way to win my heart, gamedevs!

I really like the new monk skill and its Inner Fire rune, and finally got a great 1H:

Looking forward to getting Thunderfury someday.

Kinda liked how my monk looked like for a while:

For those who still wonder if they should get the expansion, Reaper of Souls, here's a video discussing some of the pro's & con's of it:

So I've come back to D3. This expansion is pretty amazing.

I actually put Gw2 down weeks before this though...I just needed some "action" and D3 is now giving it to me. I like the new loot rules.

Bye bye auction house.

Having gotten to 70 and done some endgame now, I can say I will bump up my rating one notch to 7/10 simply because there is at least something more to do at 70 other than grind certain acts over and over. The bounties are usually simple and short and let you see a variety of locations. Once enough of these are done you can do a nephalem rift which is substantially longer, but still takes you through a few maps before spawning the rift guardian. Once completed you get a nice stash of loot and exp.

The main campaign though I still feel is pretty dull. A lot of the new mobs are just annoying more than they are creative and the level design for westmarch feels the same way. You literally get something like 2 new "zones" to go through before getting to malthael. The city of westmarch itself is large and although it is a new area, that new car feeling will wear off fast and you will realize that is just a giant city that you have to grind through before getting to the next zone. The only saving grace for it is that it has a ton of buildings with mini events that you can do which, although it mixes things up a bit, it actually makes the zone feel even longer. The other zone "pandemonium" is worse, feels long and windy, and has a lot more narrow pathways whereas westmarch had more open space and had more character to it. This zone has very few mini events and overall there is just nothing interesting about pandemonium imo. The story itself is just too simple imo and I feel like they could have done a lot more with it especially with malthael's character. I feel like I had a good idea about what was going to happen just from watching the opening cinematic before the game was even released! I dunno maybe I have played too much MGS in my day, but I expected a much more interesting story than what ROS delivered. Malthel could have been so much more intriguing if they went deeper into his character rather than just make him simply good guy gone bad and I have to eliminate him and save the world.

Well, finally finished vanilla D3 storyline. Played through on Hard from start to finish. Had a blast on my Demon Hunter with the Templar as my companion the whole way through. Thanx to the Loot 2.0 patch I was able to find a lot of nice & useful drops, which got me through the campaign with no deaths - I prolly should have upped the difficulty to Expert as Hard was a cake-walk. lol. Ended up being lvl 53, so still have 7 level's to get before I can start getting paragon level's - as I do not have the RoS expansion yet.

I'm actually planning on going through again, to get to L6... and try and fill out the dungeon & lore achievements. I also want to take a melee orientated character through at some point. Prolly a Monk... not sure.

I've cheated and watched a playthrough of the RoS campaign... and lolz were had. There's quite a number of plotholes, bad scripting, etc... but that's to be expected of ARPG's... they are never known for great storytelling! lol. I wonder if Blizzard are going to try and go to a Diablo MMO or another expansion or even a whole new Diablo game. Without spoiling the ending... it's left in a manner that the story can be continued. I personally hope it's either a big expansion, or maybe even it's own game. I'd say likely to be an expansion tbh.

lazykoala - sadly Blizzard have done with the Diablo games what they did with Warcraft. A lot of the lore and things explaining and showing what happened between games & expansions has been done via novels and books, and not in-game. There is some Mathial lore & stories in recent Diablo novel's. However I believe these still do not cover what happened to him when he vanished at the end of D2. He vanished and something happened to change him there... that has not been explained to this point I believe. I hope that if they do complete D3 with another expansion, they actually cover this point in-game rather than a 3rd party novel.

Quite a bit of lore can be found on the lore tomes ingame as well. I had no idea what the Arreat Crater was and how it had formed until I found the tome that explained that it was created due to the events of the end-CGI of Diablo 2 :P

Whole d3 had terrible story to begin with, worst starting somewhere in the middle of act2 and lasting till the very end. Act3 was probably the worst with azmodan pulling almost every cliche villain mistake possible.
As story in Arpgs go, well if we get down to point and click ones then perhaps it is mostly true. Still imo D2 had much better story even though it was terribly simple, just because it didn't do near as many mistakes as d3 did and it didn't feel like written by 12 year old. Good cutscenes between acts helped a lot as well.

Also I have an impression that they upped drop rates on legendary/set items in rifts by a lot.

Since I've been having connection issues in the last few days, I put my hardcore WD on hold a bit and advanced my crusader a bit. Was happily playing the guy when a friend decides to join on his lvl lvl 70 character. He proceeds to one-shot everything, so I get the amazing idea of raising the difficulty level: and I went with T6. He still managed to one shot everything (since the guys were designed for my lvl 20 guy :P) and I got 1600% more XP/gold (+ the Strength in numbers bonus for grouping).

I went up 20 levels in an hour. :D

lolz Baron. Well played sir! :D

Kysio - I do agree about D3 as a whole having a terrible story. The 1st act was ok, but Act 2 was the start of the downhill madcap dash of the story. As you said, Act 3 was full of bad villain cliches and just atrocious story/writing. I also agree that D2 had a better storyline overall than D3 had, and while D2's story was simple.. it was better and flowed better than D3. I wonder how much the D3 storyline being terrible was due to the fact the D2 team was not working on it, and Blizzard couldn't / wouldn't get decent/good story-writers in.

And yes, they have been patching the Rift loot to make it more valuable - ppl on the official boards were complaining after RoS release that it was more profitable to do chest runs than it was to do rifts. That you could get more gold and more legendaries from chest farming than rift's... Blizzard have been upping the legendary drop rate in rift's, as well as tweaking drop-rates and such to 'encourage' ppl to use rifts for loot & gold farming, rather than chest's.

Pariah - good to know. I have a lot of lorebooks I haven't found yet, so got lots of lore to look forward to hopefully finding.
