Been reading alot of speculations around the threads about the 8th profession and what the hints thus far refer to.

I have to admit, the hints culminated thus far really seem to point at the mez, but we are still in limbo officially.

What I want to know is if anyone has ideas of a class that could be the 'big surprise' if it isn't a mesmer. There are several on the forums that seem to be pretty adamant that it very well could be a disappointment to all the mez fans.

That said, what do you think? IF its not a mesmer, what is it?

Anything and everything is welcome, please feel free to throw out your wildest guess!

I kinda hope it's not a mesmer. I really don't understand how it would fit in a MMORPG. Mesmer's skills are just a combinations of everyother class's dots or such. You cant just play with simple goals. debuff that damages when casting a spell/attacking/moving/not to move. Such kind of skills/spells should be imho scattered amongst all the existing classes, not clustered for just one.
ArenaNet said when there were only two professions left, that they'll introduce a new professions and a returning one, well we got the new one, the Engineer so this hast to be one of the original professions from Guild Wars.
So far we got two soldier professions, three adventurers and two scholars. Three mainly melee fighters and three mainly for ranged attacks. There are actually all basic possible classes, one that uses bow and arrow, one that is sneaky dagger one, one with bombs, one that goes strongly into a melee fight, one melee user that also relies on magic, one basic mage, and another mage with pets only and slightly different skills. So only thing we got left is.. Uhh.. mesmer... :S

i'm guessing it will have game play mechanics similar to the mesmer, but it will be called the "magician" class or something, or an "illusionist" (and i know "illusion" was a mesmer based stat)

I think it's a Ninja, because:

A) Ninjas wear cloth armor.
B) We haven't seen it yet.

From what I've seen the Elementalist tends to have a lot of AOE damage. Maybe the next class would be more of a magic-based spiker?

It's extremely hard to say. I mean, even if you ignore the hints about what it might be, the concept art, etc, what play-styles are left? The major one left that I can think of is the sort of conditional control and misdirection the Mesmer already embodies.

I'd almost point to the Dervish style. Even though we already have aspects of it in the Guardian, it could still come out stronger in the 8th somehow.

We're kinda missing a Druid style, even though you can use elements of it via Sylvari and Ranger. Give the Ranger a staff with focus on nature magic and that'd likely be filled though.

There's a spiritmaster style, but Necromancer already has a summoner style covered (I envisioned summoning up to three companion spirits that hovered behind you gave various area effects wherever you went), Engineer has a lot of the other mechanics I would use for that covered (spirit possession too close to kits, placeable spirit rifts pretty much turrets), and Ranger has the nature spirits to cause environmental effects, so what we're really missing is the aesthetic (three Guardian spirit weapon skills really don't cover this) and I'm not sure that's enough for a unique profession.

We kinda have a shapeshifter in the Norn, so I'm not sure we could get that. Then again, shapeshifting and illusions are pragmatically the same, so the Mesmer might even have that.

ArenaNet said they started with 40 and combined and dropped some. We'd probably have to wait until after the 8th, but I'd actually like to ask if there were some decent profession ideas that weren't incorporated into the existing 8 that they'd like to revisit in the future and see how it develops.
