Roleplayers, do you participate in PvP activities in the MMO games you've played previously, or intend to participate in Guild Wars 2? Why or why not?

I have been tempted into it at some points, mostly to do team based things with friends as well as it having been necessary to get some pretty-looking items I wanted to wear.

I've kind of lost a lot of interest in PvP as a whole, but if friends of mine play it and such I may be coaxed into trying out some.

Do you consider your PvP to be an in-character activity, or an out-of-character activity? Do you do any roleplaying while you're PvPing, or do you just work it into your personal narrative later?

That depends on the nature of the game. If the PvP is a central expression of the game's primary conflict (like in Warhammer Online) I happily indulge in it as an in-character thing, but usually only after the battle in "tavern RP". I very rarely actually roleplay during fighting, unless it's something open like the way WHO had open world PvP with the objectives and everything. Then there's always room for battlecries, tactics talk around the capture points and similar things.

When a game centers itself around battleground/scenario like things (WoW, what GW2 seems like it's going to do) I don't consider it an in-character activity whatsoever, assuming I'm even interested in the first place.

There is definitely people out there who do both RP and PvP. However if you talk about competitive PvP'ers, as in, top players, none of them does RP for real. I've been playing WoW in top ladders for years now, trust me there is no people who are truly interested in RP. If they do it, they do it to have fun/laugh at other people/mock RP'rs, but never never RP seriously and make a story for their character.

Same goes for RP'ers. Those who take RP seriously, think about their character story, join RP guilds, rarely talk OOC - are never in top of ladders, hence non-competitive. They can enjoy PvP and do it quite alot. But they can only be decent at best:)

I honestly don't understand the concept why of RP=PvE
:\
To me RP and PvP went hand in hand given choice. PvP means  player versus player and unless you were doing my little pony RP, you'd have at least some fight break out anyways.

this holds especially true for games like Aion and Warhammer.
Whenever I pvp in these games, I'm always IC.

Not sure how GW2 will be though seeing as pvp is on kinda blurry line lore wise.
I'll be pvp-ing either ways though.

All my former guildmates in AoC would like a word. Several were hardcore PvPers who stayed in character and did very well in World and Siege PvP. not to mention several of my guildies are gauging to go to the Mists. Then again I've had a different experience than you, so perhaps we can enlighten each other.

I assure you that they're out there and you just didn't cross paths with them.  My WoW server had a fair number of really bloodthirsty, talented PvPers who also enjoyed RP, and one of the best hardcore PvPers I knew was also a diehard troll RPer.  PvP was a huge part of his RP, because his character despised the Alliance.

There is no magical gene that shuts off PvP ability when interest in RP rears its head.  The main thing keeping most of the RPers I've ever met out of PvP has been the fear that people will be jerks to them about it, and I'm willing to bet that you've run across at least a handful of RPers in PvP who just weren't about to advertise their interest in a context where they thought it would be mocked or unwelcome.

Honestly?  No

I mean, I technically PVPed competitively back in WoW but it never went anywhere above 1200 in the 3v3 brackets.  I do PVE like an absolute diehard though.

Definitely. PvP to some is a very intense serious environment and RPers could very easily feel that if they RP in front of the wrong group in PvP, they are gonna end up flamed.

I think Ring hit the head of an important nail there. I think a lot of roleplayers might not advertise their roleplaying when in a crowd of none-roleplayers because we tend to get looked down upon and mocked, and many people seem to believe that roleplayers can't actually play the game.

I don't personally mind, I've also been told that women can't play and tons of other things, so it's sort of just starting to sound like background noise, but I completely understand why some people chose not to speak about it. And honestly, it's not like, if you're in a PVP situation, you get in and say "Hi guys, I'm a roleplayer!". I'm pretty sure the serious PVPers in the RP community knows when they can emote more freely, and when it's time to shut it down and focus on the game. Often, it might simply not come up at all in a PVP situation, even if you're not trying actively to hide it.

I used to PvP and RP.

But then I gave up roleplaying to be more serious with my PvP.

I've never seen anyone who was good at both PvP and RP. But, then again, I am never in a place where the two can be together. (i.e. EVE Online, the Moon Guard RP server on WoW, PvP servers on WoW, etc.)

Generally I like RP and PvP, but do them together? No.....in PvP my focus is on fighting and strategy, and the two don't necessarily mix for me. If anything, if I was trying to concentrate, and someone was roleplaying beside me, it might actually agitate me slightly depending on how chaotic things are getting.

In WvWvW I might feel there is more room for a bit of roleplay here and there, but again, I'd probably be too in the moment enjoying the PvP to do it properly.

Hmmm. I play PvP a lot. But I do RP a little as well.. I suppose I'm not a hardcore RPer though, and usually only one or two of my characters are the RPers - because you can't RP with the opposite sex? (anyway.............)

RPing and PvP at the same time though? Nah. No chance. However I could perhaps see it in WvW, depending what the situation is, but I'm not harcore like that.

I don't roleplay in MMO's but sometimes I get caught in the moment and say things like.. Thank you dear maid for saving my life, or like I shout For the QUEEN!! Wraagahagaha. To make everything funnier, but mostly I'm very Out of character and always talk about IRl stuff.

Roleplayers, do you participate in PvP activities in the MMO games you've played previously, or intend to participate in Guild Wars 2?  Why or why not?

I've done some player vs. player in Age of Conan, World of Warcraft, and Warhammer Online. Most of my competitive was in World of Warcraft's arena system, during Wrath of the Lich King, and then as a rated battleground leader in Cataclysm for a short stint.

I do intend to participate in Guild Wars 2 PvP, but I'm confused as to whether I will needed a dedicated PvP character for WvWvW or if it'll use my regular one? If it is using my regular one then most assuredly, yes, I will be present for WvWvW events. That and whether I should mouse-turn due to GW2's active dodging feature are my only concerns.

Do you consider your PvP to be an in-character activity, or an out-of-character activity?  Do you do any roleplaying while you're PvPing, or do you just work it into your personal narrative later?[/QUOTE]

I consider World Player vs. Player to be an in-character activity, as it can be just as fun as sitting in a bar, going over in-character business. I'll be even more excited if we can fight within the cities. Imagine intercepting a package courier to a rival? Or chasing the thief of your coinpurse to give him a good thrashing or two?

I usually RP when there's a lull in the combat, issuing terse, quick orders for the caravan guards to form up and keep their eyes open, beckoning the wounded to call out and be dragged closer to safety, etc.
