New minor race!

Originaly posted by ArenaNet
Grawl are humanoid ape-like creatures—slightly larger than the typical human—and are covered with long fur of various shades of grey. Because their faces and postures are definitely simian, charr scholars have theorized that the grawl are a debased form of human, or that the humans are a type of grawl uplifted by their gods.

Human researchers, on the other hand, point out the heavy, hunched shoulders of the grawl and the fact that they walk on their toes—both features of the charr—and posit a close kinship between the charr and the primitive grawl. Unlike the charr, however, the grawl run with a bounding, skipping gait that gives them sufficient altitude to see their targets at a distance, and they move with a sure-footed grace that gives them an advantage in their rocky territory.

HOORAY A RED POST!!! Finally! I was waiting to read up on the grawl! Ahahaha Planet of the Apes reference, very witty :) I love their form of animism, worshipping objects around them as though they have spirits residing within them.

I wonder if this post will be the herald of a torrent of information...? @.@;

Feels like they are narrowing down the minor races. Of the known ones, I think we only have the Dredge and possibly Tengu left. Of course, they can pull any number of "new" races like the Kodan and Quaggan...

Nice, I had nearly forgotten about the Grawl. It's nice to see them fleshed out abit more. :)

Centaur, Dredge, & Tengu left to go?

I think a lot of people expect the Tengu to be a big part of Guild Wars 2. Many think they'll be the next playable race. I wouldn't expect any news any time soon, unless it is specifically to say they will never be a playable race.

Nice post.

One question though: Will Grawl (bosses) follow the same ''naming conventions'' as in Gw1?

Loved those boss names :D

I find this picture rather interesting. The blog never said anything about Grawl Shamans able to summon such things. They said they worshiped objects they considered powerful, interesting...

While I am glad we got some information I am left wanting more.. after almost a month of waiting D: Hopefully we will see some more substantial stuff real soon.

Anyway - I have more sympathy for the Grawl now! I have been thinking a lot about which minor race I want to sympathize with for my personal story.... Grawl where pretty much out but this article gives them a chance :)

I have to say I thought they would announce something much larger then just the grawl. Like a month with no information and then just the grawl?? I guess its better then nothing.

Not bad, not bad. I'm glad these guys finally got a little depth.

Interesting to hear the five main races' attitudes towards them.

I like how Anet handles the under-current feelings that humans and charr have for each other just by describing the Grawl.

A number of individuals of many races have looked upon the grawl as potential allies, cheap labor, or easy marks. All have been disappointed in the results.

I loled. This seriously made the blog post for me. :p Anyone else find it weird that The Grawl are the ones who've been left behind in the 250 years of advancement while the Dredge have become smart enough to reconstruct The Iron Forgeman?

I honestly, honestly tried to read this blog post without laughing but ever since I saw this video back when it was released by Jack McDaniel A.K.A Kryta Bomber I have never looked at Grawl the same again. :p

I loved how both the humans and the char find fleeing similarities between them and the grawl to throw dirt at one another! :D

As a longtime D&D player, for me, the best part was the second-to-last paragraph:

Quote

When the grawl first appeared in an alpha test version of Guild Wars Prophecies, they were called trogs. This old nomenclature survived deep in the heart of wikis devoted to the subject, and in Guild Wars 2 names like “Grawl Udolyte”—a name which makes more sense when you consider it was originally “Trog Udolyte,” or “troglodyte.” A troglodyte is traditionally a cave-dweller, and though Dungeons & Dragons transformed them into stinky lizard-guys in the mind of role-playing gamers, the traditional image and odor of the primitive Neanderthal hang heavily over the grawl.
I had to laugh about the "stinky lizard-guys" comment because that's essentially what D&D troglodytes are. In that game, they are humanoid reptiles that emit a stinky musk which causes a negative modifier to any foes they encounter. ArenaNet's Grawl seem to fit much closer to the dictionary definition of troglodytes.

Nice read, but what's up with that biology thing "humans believe that because of their hunched backs grawl are related to charr"... so in fictional world human-like apes are related to anthropomorphic cats :P Human logic, I thought they were smarter! Or are they just trying to insult charr?

who knows, maybe the grawl of many ages ago evolved into both the charr and humans. They could be related :surprised:

Jeff Grubb said:

However, many charr draw a parallel between grawl animism and human religion, to the irritation to both grawl and humans.

To counter that, humans could retaliate with the fact that the primitive (GW1 era) charr was as fervent about worshipping any powerful-looking entities as the grawl, and also fancied changing their beliefs on a regular basis (from titans to destroyers). :p

Also, another excellent read by Jeff. It was a nice little info snippet, but it only increased my hunger for more. I really want to get to know the person behind that beautiful, feminine silhouette on the profession page. ;)

It's Ru Paul. Vogue.

Anywho, I liked this post. It's been a long time since I and the BEAST known as Makani Ookook duelled.

edit: also, I totally agree with the "opinions of grawl reflecting opinions of other races thing" up there. I am NOT going to be able to pick a favourite minor race.
