About potential announcements:

Eric Flannum said:

Since you asked nicely :) There is not going to be any sort of beta related announcement on the 11th. There will be a blogpost going up that week but it is in no way beta related. Sorry for the confusion guys.

Eric Flannum said:

Thanks for catching that. No 8th profession reveal either guys... sorry to be the bearer of bad news. That reveal is still on track for this year but not the week of the 11th.

About the demo:

Eric Flannum said:

The G-Star demo does indeed feature some new things. Some things are for this demo only, for example the armor you see is high level armor which will indeed appear as an option in the western version of the game but for the korean demo we start out players wearing it. We'll explain things in a series of blog posts this week so sit tight, more info is on the way.

Regina Buenaobra said:

Hey everyone, I'm seeing a bit of confusion about the G-Star demo. Given that this demo is being presented in Asia and that we are further along in development, we have been able to add in options that make the game look more visually appealing and we have also tweaked it so that the people attending G-Star will find it approachable.

The faces and armors are not region-specific. A few faces that would be more appealing to Asian gamers were added to the G-Star demo. Everyone has access to those faces. We put in some flashier armor for the G-Star demo, but that armor is available as high-level armor to everyone. :)

Again: the reason you see faces that would be more appealing to Asian markets in the G-Star demo, but not the more Western faces is because this is a demo for a convention in Asia. It doesn't mean that we have [removed] more Western-looking faces from the game, but rather we are tailoring the demo experience to the region. It's good marketing. :)

There will be a video later this week that will show you just how flexible the character creator is in terms of making faces that are appealing to your preferences--whether it is more youthful features or whether you want your character to be more battle-weary/rugged. So don't stress out about it. :)

Eric Flannum said:

The story in the G-Star demo is compressed for the demo. However, we do make changes to story all the time and players should never expect that anything they see in a demo is set in stone.

Specifically about "easternisation" of the demo:

Eric Flannum said:

I was hoping this thread would have sorted itself out but it appears we need some clarification.

First, we did not add new armor to make the game look more asian. All we did was make our lower level characters wear some higher level armor because our research has shown us that in Asian markets, character appearance is extremely important (more so than in the west) and we wanted players in the demo to see some of the fancier armor. If you go back and look at concepts we've previously released you can find almost every single armor that we are showing at G-Star. These armors have always been planned to be in the game and none of them are replacing armors that you've previously seen.

Second, We added a lot of detail to our character faces, added some new faces to the character creator, temporarily removed others (those that we didn't have time to touch up for the demo or simply didn't like) and kept some of them the same but touched them up to match the new faces. The addition of these new faces will not mean the removal of any faces that we may have otherwise had. Tyria is a pretty diverse place and always has been. We have always wanted to allow players the option to have their humans look Ascalonian, Canthan, Krytan, and Elonan. Until now we mostly had Ascalonian with a few Krytan style faces here and there. It seemed like a good idea to add some of our Canthan style faces for the G-Star demo. Once again, the addition of Canthan and eventually Elonan style facial features has always been the plan.

We also changed the appearance of some of our NPC's. This happens all the time as we gain more options with our composite system which uses all the art that we use for our players. NPC's have changed appearance between demos before and you can continue to expect them to change appearance as we continue development. Again, as we add more Canthan and Elonan style faces into the game you can expect to see more characters with these features appear both PC and NPC. I hope this clears things up.

(Mod note, derailing this thread further to complain about this will be frowned upon)

I'm planning to go. Only thing I'm worried about is that tickets are purchased on site. I hope I'll manage to snatch one. :/

That's awesome, good luck!

I hear that this is the big marketing launch for Guild Wars 2 in the Asian market. It sounds like it will be a very big event!

big, indeed. It is the same size as the Blizzard-Booth, if you look at the floor-plan.
But i think it will be the same demo build and the same trailer as at gamescom and pax and so far.

there is not much to expect, ppl.

Wow, that stand looks amazing! I really hope GW2 makes an even stronger impression on the Korean gaming community at this show. With a display like that, I'm sure they will.

Interesting that there doesn't seem to be artwork from any other NCSoft title on that stand. I wonder if they're going to exhibit some their other titles too, or perhaps this is only one part of the display. In any event, I love the GW2 theme incorporated into the stand. It really is quite something. :)

I will wait for Arena Net details on this before "OMG LAST PROFESSION/ BETA DATE ANNOUNCEMENT!!!"

The probability is high tho, if you take in account that GW2 beta was planned to the end of the year

I'd expect them to show Blade & Soul as well, so my guess is that this is only the GW2 part of the booth or something.

Most likely not gonna happen given Eric's last two comments.

There was a rumor that closed beta will have started when G-Star begins, however Eric has said that there will be no beta announcement before the event (which of course does not mean that the closed beta will not have started by that time, it is a CLOSED beta after all).

Oh my... That's huge.

I'm very sure that GW2 will have a pretty big gaming community in asia. Especially in SEA areas :D (I'm from SEA)

Hopefully we get some actual pictures of the booth. I'm curious if it is really going to be that big. It seems kinda excessive, but cool at the same time.

Is Anet the only american company there? I think that is a big reason people mistake GW2 as an asian mmo.

blizzard is also there...

Korea is the home of NCSoft, ofc they are there, and ofc it will be big!

PPl mistake GW2 as an asia MMO because NCsoft is the publisher and they saw Aion before. :S

GW has a HUGE following in Korea, so there will be absolutely, without a doubt, possibolutely, indubitably, fraggle daggle whoopidy doopidy doodly doo *deep breath* be a huge gathering in that stand. See, us westerners are culturally skeptical about everything, hell, haven't you ever found yourself questioning the color of your snot in a tissue? Alright, maybe that's a dramatic example, but I'm sure for those of you who are skeptical westerners, you get my point.

Sometimes being skeptical has its' rewards though, because when we get to see that final product, we're more blown away than the ones with absolute faith. Perhaps I'm generalizing a bit here about Asian culture and western culture, but it's just an observation.

BTW...Why the hell don't we get badass booths like that here in America!?

I guess I was imagining the same as well... ;)

MMO Culture-Article said:

From what I know, Guild Wars did not exactly do very well in South Korea, perhaps due to the level limitation which goes against the flow of traditional Korean games. But with Guild Wars 2 having an open persistent world now and a much higher level cap, NCsoft seems to be hoping the title will now suit the appetite of the native Korean gamers.

so... who's right ?
