Okay so I'd like to start a list of requests for emotes can facilitate RPing in GW2 or just might be nice to have. I only have a few suggestions initially but if other people can contribute I'll keep updating the OP to grow the list.

So it'd be great if people give ideas and then we can discuss the pros/cons of those ideas and add them to the list. The list will get more categorized and organized as the list grows and ideas are given.

This discussion is about emotes. For discussion of other RP facilitation in-game, please visit this thread and contribute your ideas!


RP Emote Requests:

Essential RP Emotes
*RP facilitating emotes not included in GW1, or GW1 emotes that could use improving*

• "/me" self-narration emote

Some ideas for emotes would be :
- Meditate
- Collapse(e.g. fall to knees one hand on floor and the other on throat).

I have an idea for tools, its from a thread i read read last month:
- Player tagging, you could tag yourself and set a status, like you could tag yourself as a roleplayer as well as other things, then as a tool to cater for this - a tool in the UI that calculates how many RP tagged players are in the realms, so roleplayers can find eachother easier.
(Keep in mind this wasnt my idea, so I dont deserve any credit for it)

I wish there was such thing as interactive emotes where the character can interact with other characters, like hugging or handshakes etc.

Ive sort of got another idea for an Emote, not sure about how viable it will be though - windeffect - basically where the wind comes and blows on your character, maybe making cloth armour, hair and other things move.

A coin toss emote would be fun and useful for those times when you can't agree on something.

Also instrument playing. That was something I looooved that they included in GW1, and their returning would be awesome. Though I'd prefer if they had actual instruments instead of air guitars/violins/drums.

Besides a facepalm emote, I think interactive emotes between players would be very cool. Maybe profession specific emotes to?
Hugs, hi fives and such would be standards though.

Got a thread going here in Primordus Visions a while back with a bunch of ideas harvested from the community. Might be useful for reference! I'll update it with any good suggestions from this thread, too :)

I really hope they add in the customizeable emotes like LOTRO and other games have had where you can elaborate on the basic actions in the actual emote. also a /me blah blah emote so you can just type up your own, even if it doesn't have any animation, would be awesome.

Yeah your thread seems to be pretty solid on the tools/functions part of my thread. I'm thinking maybe I should make this thread just about emotes and then redirect to your thread about other facilitations? What do you think? Or do you think more ideas would get flowing if there are two suggestions boxes?

I suppose there is a bit of flexibility in terms of what people regard as essential emotes for RPing, and what could be considered fluff on the side.

For me, a sitting emote is the obvious essential, and I suppose you could view a walk toggle as a more extreme emote that we all feel that the game really needs. We know that we'll have those in the game now, but of the other emotes that you want, which ones do you feel are important, and which could you do without?

I've not really RPed much in-game, although I have watched other people do it, so I'm coming at it with a very uninformed perspective.

I would think that, aside from the sitting/walking aspect, the more obvious gestures such as nodding, shaking head, bowing or kneeling would be important (which, following GW1 I would hope are in - has anyone tested the emotes at the demos?), but were there any that were absent in GW1 that you really felt hampered without?

I suppose a list at the top in two parts - those emotes which people feel RPing suffers without and those which are simply nice to have - would expand this topic a little, and hopefully ultimately be more helpful to and ANet staff who happen upon it.

Well I think the purpose of this thread is to get ideas that you would perhaps assume GW2 doesnt already have, which is why no one has mentioned the essential ones, I also think that people should try and use their imagination, the interactive emote thing seems unlikely to happen but hey its a cool idea.

Okay I've changed things up a bit based on the input:

• I've made this thread about emotes only and provided Faowri's link so people can give any other ideas they might have.
  
• I've taken TotTWriter's suggestion and I've made separate categories for essential emotes and other requested emotes.

So far I've only put two emotes in the essentials list. If you think any of the other suggestions are essential, or would like to add a new essential emote, give your input and we'll discuss it all. Thanks!

would love to have a /tinker.

much like the reading one but you'd tinker with something so for instance a Char would pull out a pistol and start cleaning the barrel or something and a Norn might take out a sword and start sharpening the blade.

A whole bunch of these would be nice. Obviously some are setting or genre specific, but it's still a nice list.

What would also be nice is if there was something like the /mood <type> command from EQ2 where it set your character's facial expression to reflect the mood selected until changed.

I'd call sitting down an essential emote myself, really.

Also, it'd be nice if you could /lie down as well. It's used often during RP as far as I'm aware, so. But still, sitting down just -has- to be in the game. The Guild Wars universe is so appealing for RP, look at the novels for example. It would be bad if they didn't facilitate roleplayers to some degree - I know I'd be disappointed if there were very few emotes, and if the speaking / emote length was only 150 characters or something.

A fully innteractive environment (not only in combat) would be awesome, where it is possible to sit on various chairs (with various sitting aniamtions), drink/eat at a table/counter, see your character forging a sword, cooking his meal, also clicking on a bed would make him sleep on it, upon clicking on a potion in your inventory, your character would pick it out from the belt pouch and drink it. I know it has been mentioned many times, but I would miss the ability to walk, running anywhere is very tiring.  

In GW1 the only real actions could be performed during a fight, and the really only thing the character could do was killing off mobs. I hope in GW2 everything will change radically, we've already witnessed how cool combat is, soon we must see how epic cooking is (the best one I've seen so far is in Aion).

A fake death would be nice. I rp'ed in a game where you could kill your character and submit a bug report when they were stuck somewhere, as a sort of reset button. Rp'ers used it all the time to pass out drunk, or when they were knocked unconscious, or whatever.

/cry would be nice. It was in GW1, but it was made specially for an NPC in the Hearts of the North questline and players couldn't use it.

My GW1 guild used to play Mafia (but with vampires instead of mobsters) and we'd all equip Blood is Power (which was a spammable spell that removed 33% of your health when you cast it) to RP player deaths. It was so much fun. :D

I dunno how it can be properly implemented, I was thinking synchronized emotes between 2 characters, like, say, handshake or hug.. dunno, it might get annoying getting handshake requests...

It was possible to synchronise emotes in GW1; you just typed the /command and added an asterisk* to the end of it. Everyone who had typed an emote followed by an asterisk would perform their emotes simultaneously, though it was up to the players to get their positioning correct.

yeah, I know about GW1 synchronized emotes. What I meant was, animations that are meant to be done by 2 players involving physical contact, like handshakes, that lock both players in position to perform the emote.

maybe kick it up a notch, and make a whole synchronized dance animation where the 2 players are actually holding each other by the hands and waist dancing waltz or tango or something :P
