To go along with the beginning of the Year of the Dragon and the exciting Guild Wars 2 news that we received today, we've decided that it's time that we begin our site transformation by holding a Guru Logo Contest! Forget about the current theme and look - because that'll be changing - and let your imagination soar! Entries will be accepted starting January 23rd until February 6th, 11:59 PM PST/February 7th, 7:59 AM GMT. After that, Jenn and I will hold a judging session where we'll pick the logo we think best represents Guru.

Good luck and can't wait to see what you fabulous people come up with! :)

After a long, grueling judging session, we have finally decided on our new logo! I know it's taken a long time, but there were a TON of amazing entries and it was really hard for us to choose between some of them. But in the end, we feel this one had a slight edge over the rest. So without further ado, we'd like to congratulate... plutonka, specifically for the last logo represented in this post of hers. :D

Thank you all that participated and those that cheered everyone on. You'll be seeing the new logo in action soon as our forums are currently undergoing a design change!

- We're looking for a logo. Something iconic. You're creating a brand for us. You have to consider your designs at different scales. It needs to be versatile, it needs to absolutely capture GW2G and when people see it, they know it's us.

Look at how logos are utilized across various Curse fansites and ask yourself - will yours work? Or is it just a pretty graphic? You could have the best design ever, but it might not function as a logo.

Just some food for thought.

Cool that Guru is getting all fancied up and excited to see what logos people design, but I always liked the Guru logo and color scheme and will be sad to see it go. Also the Guru logo using the old official logo made it seem more old school and 1337.

Was looking for font files, this may be of use to some people, looks like it was created by a guru member so not sure on the copyright if they would care to comment on the availability for our use.

Since you said it has to be saved in layers to be given to you guys in case we win, I would assume that means you guys will need to edit the images to make them work for the website. So does that restrict us to use Photoshop only, or will other programs be ok? I use Paint.net for example.

Great contest idea. Also, knowing that the whole forum theme is going to change is pretty neat aswell. A more slick and user friendly look is always a big plus imo. And with the upcoming "like" feature in the mix, these boards will rock hard!

Actually, I was thinking earlier today that the guru logo doesn't do the artistic style of Guild Wars 2 justice :o I'm not much of an artist, but good luck to all of you who plan on participating! :)

You may pull inspiration from their designs or possibly alter some images. Basically, we don't want to impinge on ArenaNet's identity, which means it can't be similar to their official logo.

It would have to be a Photoshop or Illustrator file. Added that in.

I don't know about Paint.net, but Artweaver has a free (and pretty good) version of its art program that is able to save and open .psd files, as well as work in layers :)

Here is my first crack at this. Decided to do just a slight evolution on the GW2 style. Its set for a black background (no idea what you guys are planning as of yet) that gives it a slightly different feel than the white that Anet is using. I will post a few more here, should be fun!

Here is a horizontal version. I'm not sure if they constitute looking too official or not. Hoping the black sort of sets it apart but the font and imagery are still recognizable to new users so they know they are on a site dedicated to GW2.

Bhima, you used ANet's dragon logo and font. Pretty sure that would be the kind of IP infringement Guru is looking to avoid.

EDIT: And you're not the only one. Looks like the general impulse is to grab the GW2 logo and mash it up. Guess we'll need some more Guru Admin feeback here as to what exactly is appropriate.

From what I'm understanding, the OP pretty much says "Don't use the dragon 2 logo that's very apparent as ANet's theme as any submitted logo using it will get turned down".

Okay, the t-shirt issue is no longer an issue because we won't be able to produce them as our site name has "Guild Wars 2" in it. So yes, you can use Anet assets like previously mentioned as long as it doesn't look like an official logo.

That's what I got from it.

Using their character art and the GuildWars logo with their font both seem like pretty clear things to avoid as well. That's a whole lot of copyright infringement right there.

Yeah, I'd suggest to the people submitting not to add the "2" dragon or any official art work (unless ANet doesn't care, then I say go for it!). I'm no good with that photoshop stuff, so all I can do is put my 2 cents in.

Here's how I imagine the logo:
A WoW shaman getting blasted by an Elementalist. Above them the GW2G logo is written and below them the subtext is written as "Where people come to destroy fan boy mentalities and promote others". I would get a good laugh out of it.
