From the latest TTH interview we know that the 5th dragon has a name, which they won't release. Whereas names like Jormag and ol' Kralky were released fairly early on, ArenaNet doesn't want to release the final name yet. I can only assume that it is because the name itself might tell us something (whereas Jormag and Kralky really didn't).

So, you awesome lore people, you. What names do we know that could be painted on this shrouded Elder Dragon that would mean something?

Bahltek?

Janthir?

and Malchor was already mentioned?

Moderator Edit: Despite the teasing about the DSD's name being in one of the books, it has been confirmed that this is not actually the case - the interview answer suggesting that it might be was purely a case of the interviewees being put on the spot.

I will personally DIE if Malchor is the name of the dragon, ROFL!!!

Do we know of any giant sea-serpents or the like in Guild Wars canon, as it seems that would be the ONLY reason they would still keep the name hidden for so long.

First thought of a GW name mentioned which could be a dragon: Rodgort

But that would fit for Primordus more. :p

There are only two power/large sea creatures we know of - both in Cantha. The Kraken (powerful), and the Leviathan (powerful and large). However, I doubt that the deep sea dragon is related to either.

My question is: what makes you all think that the name exists in the game? Not only that, but unless it was a random unused name, then the name would be in EN, Movement, or Ecology (or a later lore informational source).

It does seem like even the name holds something important or spoiler related, which would be a good reason to keep it hidden for now, though they're really taunting...

I actually mentioned to a guild mate back when they named Zhaitan and Jormag that it would be funny if it turned out the much used "Malchor" name for Zhaitan, turned out to be the deep sea dragons name.

At this point the name could be anything, i doubt many were expecting Kralkatorik as one of the names at all for example.

What is the name "Kralkatorik" even based off from???

Personally, I haven't the slightest clue, I mean I was in the group that thought that Kralkatorik was going to be named Grothmar... I really thought that would have been the better name, but I love calling him Kraly!! ;)

I think when the name was released, someone was able to link it to the name of a volcano - or another language for the word volcano.

Edit:

Found it. Mordakai linked it as being similar to Krakatoa. Though my first thought upon the name (and look) was Cragorah from Billy and Mandy episode "Giant Billy & Mandy All-Out Attack" (yeah, name's nothing alike, dunno why that was my first thought...).

I personally thought they were actually going for the sound with Kralkatorik. I mean...that name even sounds like an earthquake.

Something tells me it's going to be longer, and far more complicated to pronounce than anything we've seen so far -.-'.

It is unsure whether he's a demon or a dragon. :p A small skill emblem and a weak reference does not clarify if it's a dragon or not.

On-topic: I'm really curious why is that poor dragon shrouded in mystery. And I can't think of any kind of spoiler that it might relate to. Perhaps it was hibernating in a forgotten, watery civilization that was at the bottom of the deepest sea (Atlantis o.O).

I hope it will have a really nice name. I'm pleased with the Elder Dragon names so far and I'm really excited about this fellow.

Edit: Are you in love with that tentacle-faced Cthulhu, Konig? ;)

Maybe the Deep Sea Dragon is located where Utopia was going to be set in???

We're not even sure if Rodgort is an aspect of lore. Though due to its origin, I think dragon would be more fitting than demon...

And no, I am not in love with Cthulhu, Thalador, it just seems like the most obvious reference source for the deep sea dragon (aside from, as you brought up, Atlantis). Though I do greatly enjoy Lovecraft's works (mostly his writing style though, which my writing style is starting to act like when I don't include dialogue in my short stories... or rather, a mix of Lovecraft's style and Poe's style).

Anyways!

I doubt that the deep sea dragon's name will be something that's long and hard to pronounce, seeing how all of the previous names are relatively easy to pronounce (though not easy to remember at first).

Also, instead of looking for the name in GW, I think we should compare references of the other dragons and then potential references for the deep sea dragon. I doubt they'd have two of the same reference. Jormag seems to be of norse, Zhaitan of islamic (much like all of Orr), Primordus is hard to tell, and Kralkatorrik (if Mordakai is right) could lead to Indonesian references.

That said, Greek (via Atlantis), and Cthulhu mythos are very likely. Can't think of any other water-based things, unfortunately.

@TriggerSad: I don't think the Deep Sea Dragon would be too far from Tyria, though it is possible that it is where Utopia was to take place (though we don't even know if there is a sea near that land).

The key to finding something that don't want to be found is to, instead of speculating, try to evolve what we already know.

So what do we know?

His power is to make tentacles/tentacled creatures in every single lake if he wanted to, right? Well we could go and search for every single tentacled related creature there is, but then we would still have allot of work to single one out.

So what more do we know.

lets take the other dragons.

Jormag: Clearly from the Norse mythic creature Jörmungandr, which fits very well considering its location.

Zhaitan: Anyone doubting that it's from Satan? Fits well to. his power is to raise the undead to use as minions, or atleast that's what he do ;) Satan being an evil guy and all i assume want to enslave the humanity so imo it fits very well :p

Kralkatorrik: Krakatoa. Even if it's a coincident, it's a great one :p The volcano as i understand (didn't read everything), destroyed allot of things, was big, had the power four times bigger than the largest nuclear device ever built, and 13000 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb. It sounds like our dragon, no? the only problem I have with it is the location: Indonesia, which I can't see how this fits into the charr place (isn't charr from Romans or Greek or something?) Though it may be just in this case.

Primordus: I can't figure this one out at al, the closest i got was a lizard Called Varanus primordius or blunt-spined goanna. Lizards kinda = dragons, though I can't see that one having any connection, unless Premordus is blunt-spined ;)

So what are we looking for? A creature/thing in folklore or in history that has something to do with tentacles/seas and/or a nature catastrophe.

The charr seem to be a mix of Roman and Mongul influences, but you must remember: Kralkatorrik is in the Crystal Desert (which is more or less free of influences except for Elonians, Losaru, Joko, and Forgotten), not the Charr Homelands. I think the only reason why he was put up there was so that we could see him hibernating.

And now I just got the random though that the deep sea dragon will be named after that tsuname Hiroshima....

Famous sea monsters/dragons?

Scylla & Charybdis are the most obvious that have not been mentioned. Charybdis swallows and spits out the entire sea twice a day (causes the tides) and is a major player (with the good friend Scylla) in the Odyssey.

It could also be named after a wave

Uluwatu and Jaws are the two waves I know the names of.

Though, didn't he destroy/"make a scar" on his way down there?

Apparently yes. I'm guessing the Charr Homelands and Old Ascalon now have a canyon, or fissure slicing through them.

I never said he was retcon'd to the desert. I was saying that is where he is now and the most likeliest location of any references related to references made by him - aside from his own minions, of course.

"Primordus" probably just came from "primordial" (or from Latin, if you want to delve further into the etymology). Evidence: There's a song on the GW:EN soundtrack called "The Primordial."

I think Primordus can be loosely translated to first massacre, or prime massacre. (Primus from Latin) Since it was the first of the dragons to wake up.

That makes sense. I was tieing Primordus to simply being a primordial force of energy that has existed on Tyria since it's formation.

Doing a litle Latin --> english reaserch :p

Primordial = early, primitive; ancient, primeval; initial, from the beginning; original

Pri = ahead| in front| leading; previous| earlier| preceding| prior; former; basic

mordre = bite, catch, take; snap, strike

mordu = stung, smitten

So like... the ones that locked him away used smites on him a long way back? :p

But that means we gave him that name, which I don't think is the case, beacause didn't the dwarfs know the names, meaning the names are old? :p

BTW, who gave the dragons their name (lore, not anet :p), themself or someone else?

That depends, Huginn, if the dragons are sapient or not.

Well here are a few options of how we theoretically learned the names:
1-at some point in gw history, the dragons / their followers told somebody what they were called.
2-the dragons' opposition named them, and that was passed down to us.
3-we were told by the gods
4-anet makes no name lore (like most of the regular non-human bosses)

Glint/Kunni can speak. You'd imagine since the dragons are powerful enough to raise the dead etc., they'd be able to convey their choice of a name if they wanted. (option 1)

It seems kind of silly to give the dragons such specific names if option 2 is the case. Who would look at a dragon and say, 'man, he looks like a Kralkatorrik to me'. Yeah, its a fantasy world, but still, you'd expect a name more descriptive like, 'the great destroyer', 'desert dragon', or yeah, something easier than kralkatorrik.

option 3 is easy, though i think the gods were supposed to become less involved in tyrian affairs, so that might be less likely.
