Yeah, who has ever heard about consoles ruining a game or a franchise?

Only in rare cases to be honest. At least in my experience.

I haven't.  Please tell me about any that have, and point me to any of their discussions that you find relevant.  Maybe if I had heard about this being a problem, I would be more concerned.

Fallout: BoS.
Go ahead and play it. And no, I'm not going to write essays about how consolization (a known phenomenon in video games industry) is bad for video games just because you're new to the industry or/and ignorant.

I will leave this little caveat here though. Towards the end of FFXI's life the PS2 was pretty much the platform that sandbagged some of the new content because of it's limitations compared to the higher end systems. Should ANet decide to create console versions, they just need to make sure that the chosen consoles will provide enough expandability and longevity that can accommodate the kinds of growth they will want to see.

Which is exactly why, if a console version ever does get released, it won't be for current gen consoles. They're on their way out, what with heavy rumors of new ones being shown this year or in 2013. And they would absolutely limit GW2 down the road.

My guess is PS4 and the next Xbox if they somehow convince MS to open up the possibility of cross platform play, which they've generally been really opposed to. Again, if it does ever get released. There have been a ton of other MMORPGs that had planned console versions that never saw the light of day.

Gamespot's review for it is a 7.3 (good).

it didn't ruin the franchse.

A-Net better port this thing to Wii U if they're going for consoles. Better hardware and a touch screen interface (which makes it perfect for a game like this with minimal effects on a PC version), plus an open online architecture, plus it comes out this year. They'd be crazy not to unless NCSoft has some deal with Sony securing exclusivity for all their games.

I am mostly a PC gamer, i own ps3 but i only have a limited ammount of games for it. I will pick gw2 for pc obviously. But i know a lot of people that would love to play gw2 who own consoles. And i believe they should have a chance at it no matter how much PC fanboys like me think.

Let me re-post my previous statement (that is also in the first post of this thread):

We stated multiple times in public that we have a small team working on a console version, but that we are fully dedicated to make the most kickass game for PC (I think the official statement did not use the word kickass, in case someone wants to semantically disect my post ).

It is amazing how the fact that we are dedicated to make the best PC game possible is completely ignored and unfounded Angst is running rampant.

And dragon age 2 got an 8 (great!) from gamespot.

It did ruin the franchise, it made Interplay/Black Isle cancel Van Buren and in the end sell the rights to bethesda who made a complete PoS.

You want me to go through all the promises you made about GW1 and never kept? PvP-only players will probably have more. Don't act as your word means more than that of any other developer in the industry, that is, not much, really.

Well ruined is a strong word but look at Skyrim and the crappy frikkin user interface on PC that took what, 2 months for them to patch out and still wasn't very good. That entire game is built around the fact that it is on consoles. you can only access to 2 skills at a time, and you have to change them out if you want a different one. IMO this is a blatant case of having the game on multiple platforms affecting the other platforms.

Now that doesn't have to happen, kingdoms of amalur did this and it had a very good user interface on both platforms and the different versions did not affect eachother greatly from what I've been able to tell. But the concern is there, and it is more then valid to be worried about this happening. Core game features can change simply due to the fact that it has to work over multiple platforms. Again, it doesn't have to if it's done right. But the fear is there because we've seen it so many times.

Sorry Martin but that promise has been done by so many developers you can't expect people to simply take your word for it. I have a great deal of respect for ArenaNet and you guys and I don't think you would let the game suffer for having a console version, but the fact remains that this is something that have ruined peoples enjoyment of games in the past, I understand we're talking in hypothetical here which is why I'm trying to say this in a very polite way.

I also understand that what we here on Guru think is pretty much irrelevant to your final decision as this is a very minor part of the overall community. But the fears I feel are valid.

I agree; if they add consoles I personally would support the x720 and the ps4. Unfortunately I just see the WiiU as becoming the "sandbag" later down the road.

I don't get it, if anet wanna put it on console what's the big deal? it's not like people who will play on pc stop and play it on console. the game will still be the same on pc, it will just be modify to play on console, people need to take a chill pill and get over it.

The biggest drawback won't be the controller or how the game itself will be, it's dealing with Microsoft and Sony and connection/patching changes. Often time patches won't happens for console games if they are on PC as well (on time anyway) because Microsoft/Sony want to approve them first.

I've played a few games that are on all systems, the experience varies quite a bit. I have no doubt that they will focus on the PC version and that it'll prove to be a poor idea to bother with a console version. Sure it would be nice to have a ton more players with us, but chances are that could expose us to some unforeseen unpleasant experiences. I wish people hadn't worded this article the way they did, on Massively even.

I don't think this will come to pass in the end, it's just really unlikely.

I'm not sure in all cases this dedication is being ignored, I think perhaps the concern is based on - probably a baseless - fear that the quality of the PC version may be at risk.

That said, since the main focus is on PC, then we should simply rest assured and continue to have faith in ArenaNet.

You're argument is invalid and has nothing to do with what I actually said. But obviously you are free to have your own opinion - even if it is based on nothing but personal speculation not based on any facts.

I think there would be less fallout if we found this news out after the release of the PC version.

I'm a touch nervous but not that much now.

Console is a 4 letter word for many PC gamers.

Ok, I have said everything there is to say on the topic. I might pop in occasionally to reiterate.
