Why play engineer? Traverse gives us his top 5 reasons to try out this unique profession.

Quote

As with most of the professions in Guild Wars 2, you can play how you want. But this is even more accentuated with the Engineer. Even though the Engineer is one of 2 professions that cannot switch weapons, your kits give you amazing flexibility, and access to the second most active abilities. (If you go with 4 kits, you’ll have 34 active abilities, which is higher than the Elementalist’s standard 30. But if the Elementalist decides to go with 4 Conjured weapons, their amount of active abilities goes up to a staggering 45.) In general, professions have between 16 and 19 active abilities.

Elementalist 101
Our elementalist columnist Belzan does a great introductory post on Guild Wars 2's leading magic user. He compares the new ele to the old, gives a brief history on the class, and lays out a nice guide on how to play this awesomely potent profession.

Quote

The School of Destruction
In Guild Wars 1, elementalists were the masters of the school of magic known as destruction. The profession had the highest amount of energy of all professions and their primary attribute was energy storage, which allowed for additional energy and provided skills to manipulate energy management. Most elementalists were purists and people created builds that were specific to one element (i.e.,  fire, water, earth, or air). Few would create builds that had more than 2 elements on the skill bar...

Five things I don't like about Guild Wars 2
Izzie lists her top five gripes about the game so far.

Quote

Gotta love the gem store. So many fun and interesting little treasures to behold. And yet, I can’t show them off unless I’m standing around in my armor-less town clothes staring off into space.
Perhaps Guild Wars just has me spoiled, but I like the idea of being a dapper badass running around slaying monsters in a top-hat and monocle. Or boxing gloves. I mean, why the hell not, right? Discovering that any sort of costume or accessory I buy for looks can only be used when in town-clothes mode was a huge disappointment. Huge enough that I pretty much decided I won’t be spending any gems on such things so long as this limitation exists...

Elementalist 101 - Utility
Our columnist Belzan continues with part 2 of his 101 guide covering the various types of utility skills, elites, how and when to use them, and more!

Quote

The Basics
I'm assuming that you are already familiar with the hero panel (to the right). This is where you purchase your utility skills with skill points. You gain access to your utility skill bar (also called "slot skills") at a staggered rate as follows: Healing skill is unlocked at level 1, first utility skill at level 5, second and third at levels 10 and 20, respectively, and your elite is unlocked at level 30. This means that you'll have plenty of opportunities to try out new skills as you slowly unlock them.
As you can see, the skills are tiered and you won't have access to some of the later skills right out of the gate. This limits your options at low levels, but by the time you reach, say, level 30, you should have enough skill points that you can pick and choose the skills you want. Also keep in mind that you can swap any of your utility skills outside of battle.

What’s new with the Guild Wars 2 community

Guild Wars 2 Spidy (Live trading post listings, statistics, and economic tracker)
Playing the global market in an MMO has always been a fun, albiet risky at times, way to make money. While the in-game economy is still trying to sort itself out a bit, people have been quick to learn a few tactics to get rich fast or take advantage of short-lived market booms. GW2 Spidy is a great site that tracks the flucuations of the economy from item prices, gem exchange rates, and availablity.

We are recruiting!
Hey all! Now that the game's been out for a month and people are getting the hang of things, TT's had a few shifts in krewe. We have a lot of people starting college, working on their own GW2 projects, or simply deciding the game wasn't for them.

We're trying to fill in some gaps in our roster with a few columnists.
Specifically, we're hoping to round off our profession columns. We're missing writers for the necro, guardian, and warrior. We've got some secondary writing positions as well as a few content researching and PR gigs.

Check out our recruitment page for more info!

We have other spots as well

Crafting / Farming Columnist

Economy / Trade Columnist

PvP Columnist

Profession Columnists – Warrior, Guardian, Necromancer

Guild Wars 2 Armor Guide – Basic Naming Conventions & Runes
If you've ever been a little confused just how armor and gear in Guild Wars 2 works, Izzie comes at us with a starter guide to armor and naming conventions to help you get started in mastering the art of instant knowledge.

Quote

The basic breakdown of your average fine+ quality piece of gear is:

<prefix><skin><piece><suffix>

<prefix> – Denotes the inherent primary stat attributes of the gear.
<skin name> – Cosmetic; lets you know which “skin set” the gear is part of, so how it will look. If you’re a stickler about staying true to full sets that match, this is the name to keep an eye on.
<piece> – Where on the body this armor goes. (giggidy)
<suffix> – Secondary stat attributes. This is where things start to get fun.

New Post! | Swimming in GW2: Long Walks Off Short Piers
Our exploration writer shares with us some of her favorite spots to hit in the often under-appreciated world beneath the waves in Tyria! There's a lot you can find hidden in the depths below...

Quote

GW2 really hit the mark here. Not only is the water beautiful and realistic, but swimming feels authentic. On my first full day of GW2, I spent over an hour just splashing around, swimming and exploring in a single area. I love that there is no timer for underwater areas, no oxygen meter to keep up with. Swimming is hassle-free. I’m not great at underwater combat; spear guns and harpoons really aren’t my forte. Combat feels as it should though, and I have to admit, trying to fire an arrow or swing a greatsword would be pretty ridiculous in those situations.

I thought I would share a couple of my favorite splashy haunts, which I love for varying reasons.  There is so much more than scenery to be had on your aquatic adventures (though there’s plenty of that, too!).

Shield of Absorption – A Bastion in the Dark

We won’t say #GuildWars2 guardians are OP, but at the hands of an adept player, having one on your side no matter what you’re doing can truly change the tides of war. Our Guardian columnist (yes, he switched sides!) DistilledWill talks about saving comrades and effectively using Shield of Absorption to its max potential when out on the battlefield.

Quote

For me, this is the most satisfying part of being a guardian. There is no more pleasing sight than 50 arrows bouncing limply against my Shield of Absorption. You, effectively, take out roughly 1/3 of an armies’ firepower with just one skill AND you can activate it a second time during its duration to heal all allies AND seeing as it is a “light” field any projectiles which pass through it will heal conditions on allies! What’s not to like?

New post! 10-24-12 - Real Life Lore: Tyrian Settlement Through 12th Century Eyes
Our new #GuildWars2 lore & story writer is an enthusiast of real life history. In her first article, Muffins compares Tyrian pre-history to that of our own, drawing striking parallels from legends of humanity’s past and that of the mythology of  Tyria. An excellent read for those of us who love to dig deeper into the lore.

Quote

If we look at what this passage says, we can clearly see the parallel between the message from the Goddess, and the assumed message from the Six Gods of Tyria: humans go to a land which was once dominated by giants but is now empty (in Tyria, this is due to the rampage of the Elder Dragons, from which the land is still recovering), and are sent to rule. The humans in Tyria’s eldest age, with the assistance of the Gods, assume power over three kingdoms, and conquer the natives in those areas, such as the Charr in Ascalon.
