They are currently accepting Beta invites and should start closed beta soon. Probably looking at a Summer release.
Dave Georgeson was the Producer and Director of Tribes 2, and also the Producer of the first Planetside. He's publicly stated several times that many of the concepts and designs implemented into Planetside were either based off of or things that he wanted to put into Tribes 2 but couldn't.
Edit: Also I'd like to say that I'm keeping my eye on Planetside 2, but over the years SOE has completely lost all my trust. I'm not in any big hurry to be burned by them yet again.

Snipers, who can 1 shot kill (And do mass damage to MAX's), also being able to cloak? I think this was a TERRIBLE idea.
Also, the camo for vehicles and max's, also a bad idea. They say "Oh they can't use colors of the other factions", yes but both factions can have zebra camo. Not sure about everyone else, but that is going to throw me off. This isn't battlefield, sneaking around can work, but in most cases it is all out war, in the heat of the battle in PS, you rarely have the time to go "Is that friendly or foe?".
Other then that, long time VS player, viva la VS!

New factions trailer.
I hope that TB will upload whole live stream recording tomorrow. I'm not feeling like watching it live since it starts at midnight time here.

Personal tastes aside, I love the lighting in this game. The Night Fights are amazing and sooooo necesary in every game, FPS or not. The aircraft are awesome and powerful, gunships feel like terrors of the sky, not just some thick target, and it's a constant battle. It's always going on! You go to bed one night, the next morning the map will be very very different.

As for the cash shop... Lets face it, it's SOE, they *will* * it up in some way - if nothing else, then having the right colour camo is already a huge advantage for open-ground combat, and as they're apparently planning open-ground combat to be important in this game...
Having said that, if they do it in a sensible way - say, make what you buy in there permanent, so that you can get all the stuff you need for less than the price of a new game, or cheap, so you can get it for less than an average monthly subscription - what's the problem, really? I mean, looking at the graphical quality of the alpha I'd say it'll probably be a game worth paying for. If not, and unlike GW2 I might add, we'll be able to test it out free of charge for as long as we want without dropping a dime or spending a penny.

Just imagining a well seasoned guild, got the leader giving out orders on the voice chat, with pre-determined group setups.
Sounds like it would be fun if you were a member of a fixed squad within the guild. Would encourage communication amoung the small group, get to know people, hang out. Night patrols can get lonely, and somone has to warn everyone when people are attacking.
That's just me fantasizing though, most guilds will be, "Hey, glad you logged on, we are attacking Foxtrot Station, come help us." At best.

One can sit on a hill and shoot a gun all night. Or one can get involved with a company and take objectives.

I doubt they will be much different then last time. They are called "Outfits", and they gain points simply for /brag status.
They have been meaning to make it so Outfits can claim bases for awhile, but havn't. Hoping this happens soon.

Just wanted to keep people updated. I received a Planetside 2 notification email today that had link a link to the producer's letter and the computer spec link.
http://www.planetsid...ers-letter-beta
https://account.stat...ge!input.action
According to the email, they are getting ready for the next phase of testing starting off with a technical test. So if anyone is interested, sign up for the beta, especially if you're an old Planetside 1 player. "Remember, if you are an original PlanetSide® 1 player, you have priority!"

People on forums are telling me to join an outfit and just let my hatred for the other factions grow. But I don't wanna blindly choose a playstyle/faction when I could be having so much more fun playing as another faction that has a different style of weapons and gameplay. Curse you beta! If only you came sooner with beta keys to confused newbies everywhere!

Planetside 2 will be my primary MMO once it comes out and I cannot wait for beta to begin (got a key from PC Gamer magazine, so I will be one of the first in =D). I'll let you all know how I feel once I get in and the NDA is lifted.
Also, VS4LIFE. That is all. I had to get it off my chest. And it is more satisfying to say it on a forum for a completely different MMO than on the Planetside-Universe.com forums.

I got the Strumgrenadiers' recruiter asking if I want to join them in the NC, which is not helping.
For those who don't know the SG is kinda the prominent outfit of the NC. They are not the biggest but they are by far the most coordinated and most successful of them all back in Ps1. I wanna join the Vanu because they have laser weapons and an interesting cause, but the NC have reavers, and I wanna blow stuff up... Excessively. Guess I can do that in a scythe or other later Vanu vehicle, but I dunno to what extent.
I do wanna see monster vehicles that cost an excessive number of resources though, like a 5-8 man bomber or some 6 man supertank.

WNx was fairly coordinated also. Thank you very much.
