this thread is about people who want to preorder in a store and not use third party software.

call me paranoid or old fashioned, i don't care, i want my game, in a box, with box art and a manual and have it sitting on my shelf.

I dont want to be forced into using third party software that has to be running in the background for me to play my game.

i don;t want to be told that all the rewards for preordering the game (weekend items and the such) will only be available to those who pre order using third party software.

I want to go into my local gamestop, pre order guild wars 2 CE and get access to everything thats on the website, as well as onn launch day go in person at midnight to receive my physical copy of the game.

is there anyone else out there that feels this way and can anyone from anet tell me that there is going to be the same rewards and access for people who preorder online as well as those who preorder in stores?

Ummm, Arenanets digital version wont be using 'third party' software :p None of the NCSoft digital purchases do.

As for the rewards, you get them, but you don't get a 3 day headstart. You get a 1 day headstart.

The game uses its own client anyway, not third party software. You'll get the exact thing on a disc or digital download.

Valid points of concern... I would like a boxed version as well. But we can't really know for sure now. We don't know who the "select retailers" are and if they will actually allow us to prepurchase the game (under the same conditions as the nscoft version)...

Can someone quickly explain how these pre-orders will work? Because I don't seem to fully understand it :)

Select retailers will be the major ones. So people like gamestop, amazon, play, steam ect.

Obviously arenanet would prefer people buy directly from them of course, as they make a lot more money from that. Buying the game from gamestop would net them ~$20, while directly they get ~$55 after related expenses due to bandwidth and server maintanence.

Did you mean GAME UK? the company that's about to go into administration? You can currently buy 8000 shares in GAME for the cost of GW2's standard edition.

yeah, cancel the pre-order. Go with amazon or something :)

I feel the exact opposite.  I don't want to use a middle-man to buy GW2, I want to support ArenaNet directly. (the software will be the same, you HAVE to connect to GW2 servers to play the game!)

Since there is a physical CE that is going to be available for pre-purchase on April 10 on the GW2 website, I assume that ArenaNet/NCSoft will be mailing those out directly.

BUT, you will not lose any bonus by pre-purchasing from select retailers, according to this:

"Starting April 10, players can secure their Guild Wars 2 Limited Collector's Edition, Digital Edition, or Digital Deluxe copy by pre-purchasing the entire game at buy.guildwars2.com or at select retailers. Players who pre-purchase any edition will have guaranteed entry into all beta weekend events, three-day headstart access to the final game, and Hero's Band in-game item."

http://www.guildwars...ild-wars-2.html

So, no need to freak out.

Isn't there another FAQ stating the 3 day headstart is only from the main site?

http://www.guildwars...-game/game-faq/

The official FAQ only states:

"Will I be able to reserve character and guild names during the Headstart Access?

Yes, players who have Headstart Access will be able to claim character and guild names during that period that will carry over when Guild Wars 2 goes live. Players who pre-purchase and receive 3-day Headstart Access will have an advantage over players who pre-order and receive 1-day Headstart Access."

As I posted above, you can pre-purchase from select retailers to get Beta access, Hero's Band, and the 3-day headstart.
(pre-purchase is buying full game up front.  NOTE:  ANY edition can be pre-purchased, you don't have to buy a CE to get the bonus!)

Pre-orders give a 1-day headstart. Has there been any specific info on how to pre-order (vs pre-purchase) yet?

I understand the need/want for a boxed version. I am the same way with CDs. But strangely enough, I prefer to download my games. Every computer game I have is in steam, with the exception of BF3 (EA can go flip themselves). I am really hoping that steam will be an option for preordering, though that isn't a requirement for me. I will do a DD from NCsoft or ANet.

I'd much rather have a physical copy too! And I hope that the pre-order bonuses apply to ordering from shops, but I doubt it will... :(
After reading the other posts, I think it will :D

You can have a physical copy, but you'll only get a 1-day headstart, while the digital ones will get 3-days headstart. It's not a lot of difference, after all.

Ah right :) So, for example, Steam will have the 3 day headstart for all copies as it is always pre-purchased.

Makes sense.

If the option is there and it won't prevent me from getting (3-day) headstart access, I would prefer a boxed version of the game as well, simply so that I can have a nice GW2 box to add to my collection of... well, boxes. :)

i've3 never bought any game from nc soft digital dl and the only digital games i've bought were valve ones so i had to use steam sense it's thier software.  i would love to support them directly, i want to make sure i get a disk with the soft ware on it so that i can manage my own software directly.  i hope that anet will sent out boxes to people to digitaly buy the game, at least as an option.

if the CE editions box is all the physical items then i'm ok, but i know some people want a box of just the normal game and does anet plan on giving these people that or will the digital version be just that, digital only with no box or disks of any kind.

also i'm sure if you preorder at a store they will give you a code that you put into your nc soft account that will allow you acess to the beta, well i would hope so, but maybe they won't let you actually play the game early unless you preorder digitaly, which i don;t compleetly agree with sense thats the same as paying to win.  Use their servise to pay them or you lose out on access if you go with gamestop, actually i don't like that at all

NO, you can pre-purchase the physical CE!  There is no negative to buying the physical CE (except the cost, of course).

Again, pre-orders of any edition only get a 1-day headstart.

Pre-purchase of any edition gives:

Beta access
3-day headstart
Hero's Band

and are available from "select retailers".

If I Pre-Purchas the physical CE, can I still get in the 3-day headstart? Do you think they will ship it early or give out a digital download or what?

What i'd like to know instead is:

Can i get my copy in box (old-fashioned way)
-for evey kind of version (regular-ddeluxe-CE)
-and still get the access to betas/hero's band? (obv, i guess head start will be 1 day instead of 3day)

Mostly because i'd like to pre-purchase and gettig those bonuses (about the version is still under personal debate), but haven't acces neither to credit card of payplal or anything like that atm.

TL;DR: can i get my box AND the pre-purchase bonuses for beta?

(took a while to write this, so maybe some1 already answered above)

I think they will email the codes.  I have full faith in ArenaNet that if I pre-purchase the physical CE from them, I'll be playing the game 3-days early.

Pre-purchase, you pay for the game on April 10 but get to download the game beta event [since you have 100% guarenteed access to all of them due to purchasing the game]. You also get 3 days headstart among other things.

Pre-order, you place order on the game without buying it, and pay on delivery. You get 1 day headstart andno guarenteed beta events access.

Buying straight from ANet to support them!

Talked to gamestop today, they will notify you, and ask you to come pick up your pre-purchase code for early access. Then on release day, they will notify you to pick up your CE box.

Steam is the biggest seller of PC games in the world (it's got more than the lions share of digital, and digital has the lions share of PC sales).

If it's not 'select' then god knows what else would be.

ok so there is a difference between pre purchace and pre order, i want a physical copy of the software so if the digital CE does not have the disks then i will be buying it in a store, same goes for the regular edition i'll be buying for my wife, we want physical disks and physical boxes and if the only way to get them is in store thats where i will get them.

if the difference between the hero's band 3 day head start and beta event access is to pre-"purchace" (aka buy in full early rather than $5 to reserve a copy) then i'm ok with that.

Now i want to support anet, i want to buy it directly from them, so if anet says that digital buyers (of any edition) will get a box and disks with software on them shipped to their houses, then i will gladly buy directly from them.

Also i would like to know if pre "purchases" in stores will be able to dl early

I'd imagine their digital version will be distributed through the 'ncsoft launcher'.  I absolutely hate stuff like that but whatever.

I'm very much an 'own the box' type.  The thing is, most games now don't even HAVE a 'box'.  It's just the plastic covers and really who cares about those?  Last two games I've purchased (Skyrim and ME3) were disappointing in that regard.

Way off topic, I know.  I just happen to REALLY like the boxes and the art that was on them.  I'd equate it to going to a store and buying a comic versus downloading em onto a Kindle or something.  It's just different.

Sadly, that doesn't sound like it will be an option.  You will only be able to pre-purchase the digital.

If you want the physical box, you can only pre-order and get the 1-day head start.  No beta access or 3-day head start for pre-orders.
