[Bog Otter]

Howdy folks!  

For those that don't know me, my name is Richie and I've been making Guild Wars 2 videos since the spring of 2011.  I'm one of the hosts of Gamebreaker.tv's GuildCast and I'm also a livestream host for Massively.com.  I'm going to update this thread going forward when I release new videos and I hope you enjoy them.

I updated the original post to include my latest Tyria Talk video.  In episode 21, I discuss the differences between a gear-based MMO (like WoW) and a skill-based MMO (like GW2).  What are the advantages and disadvantages of each system?  Which style do you prefer?

In episode 22, I discuss incentive in MMOs. What keeps players interested in a game when they hit max level? Do you need to be able to get increasingly more powerful gear to keep you playing or is that just how we've been trained to think from other games?

I updated the original post with a link to my latest video:  Tyria with Tots.  My sons have been hearing me talk about Guild Wars 2 for a long time and during the recent beta weekend event, I let my 6 year old create a character and play with me. In this video, he creates a character and prepares to start his journey into Tyria.  I hope you enjoy it.

New Tyria Talk episode is now live.  I've updated the original post and put the link below.  This time, I chat about all of the updates ArenaNet has made and will be showing off in beta weekend event 2! What is the Mystic Forge? Mini-dungeons in World vs. World? New zones, UI tweaks and smarter overflow servers are all among the changes we'll see. Check it out!

Beta Weekend Event 2 will begin on Friday, June 8th, at noon PDT (GMT-7) and will run until Sunday, June 10th, at 11:59 p.m. PDT (GMT-7).

Note that this video was created before the GW2 AMA on Reddit today where lots of questions were answered.

Howdy!  I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.  I have a new video posted which discusses the new tiered traits system they introduced in the second beta weekend event.  Watch the video and then let me know what you think of the new tiered structure.

I think that the tier system is a necessary evil at this point.  It would be awesome if they figured out some way to keep the open-ended trait system from before, but indeed that would be a balancing nightmare.  Also, I know I wouldn't feel a sense of progression if everything was opened up from the start.  Since this game is not "gear based", the gear progression doesn't fill in that role, which is important to keep people's interest for PvE.

Thanks for the feedback, Zephyria.  I agree with your points on progression and I do think they went through all of the options quite extensively.  It may not be the ideal system or the option with the most freedom, but it's probably wise for them to put in the fail safes they need to balance the game.
