The article kind of missed the mark. Yeah sure, gems exist, but that was more or less confirmed before. What people wanted to know was what kind of things gems will buy in the store. THAT is what has people worried. It somewhat worries me that the topic of the store content was avoided.

My reaction of "head 'splodes" clearly didn't convey my intent to point out that this article needed to be a couple paragraphs longer.  I'm not "worried" about the shop, but he could've clarified things a bit more

After reading that, it was as everyone feared. There is opportunity for pay to win. Rich ppl can just buy gems and sell in-game for gold to get ahead. In some ways it could provide bonuses, for those who want microtransactions, but have no spare cash in real-life. I can foresee problems.

Omg, this means we can get any item in cash shop just by playing the game and using in-game gold! It will take more time but I think it's great. It's similar to League of Legends where you can buy champions by using influence points (ingame money) or riot points (real life money). It takes much more time to get enough to buy it, but you play for free and still get everything!

Actually, while not telling us what is in the store they said the store will be testable during the beta events. Meaning we will have the info of WHAT is in the store soon.

But what does that get you? A bunch of armour you can't use until you level up and is statistically no more powerful than anyone else's? Sure, you can look prettier, but it isn't going to make you a more effective player. Who cares who's the richest?

And if you want to waste real money to do that, then that's fine with us.  Does it mean anything to be rich in a video game?  Not really.  It's comparable to all the people who race to get the first comment on Facebook.  It doesn't mean anything and you're going to look like a fool.

This will be nice for when I don't feel like farming and just want to buy an armor set.  :D

So what are they going to spend their massive pile of gold on? Gear which is exactly the same as everyone else's? Consumables that everybody can buy?

If a player chooses to support the game by buying gold then good for them, but it's no skin off my nose.

Not sure of i like the system yet. Gonna go at it open minded after release, let's see how it turns out.

I like that we have the possibillity to get Shop-Items through ingame means, the buying gold via gems has me a bit worried. But since there isn't that big an advantage you can get with GW2's Gold than other games it is less big a deal people make of it.

At least this system is not as bad as Diablo 3's real-money auctionhouse.

Jesting aside, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I think it worked in EVE because PLEX only had one use and that was to extend game time. In GW2 you can now purchase things like weapons, armor, etc. Those are lasting items that stay with your character and negate the time required to actually work to achieve those items. Thus, diminishing the accomplishment of having done so. PLEX merely offered a way around having to pay the subscription fee. Not to mention the creation of PLEX took a lot of ISK out of the economy, whereas this system will not do so.

Cautious would be the word I use to describe my approach to this system. I'll give it a chance, but I'm very wary about the way this will turn out in the grand scheme of things.

Also, an MMORPG economic system is NOT EVE. EVE has one of the best currency sinks in existence: destruction of your ship. This gem RMT system will cause inflation to go up as people farm countless gold to purchase gems from players.

Sweet, so I can get all the cosmetics that you offer in the shop by just playing the game(if I have enough free-time to get the right amount of gold to trade that for gems and then buy the item in the shop)

You could already buy in game gold for real $, probably no way of stopping that, so why not make it so players are benefiting instead of third party companies who are probably obtaining them in unethical ways.

It allows players who play a lot to actually get MORE content, or MORE character slots for free.

It doesn't give any player spending real money any advantage since the unique items will be purchased not with gold, but with karma or by earning dungeon tokens.

I think the system is fine, people are just going to rage :)

Just throwing it out there before the thread explode, like every single news related thread in the past few months.

As for the Idea of gems? they're great. Removing gold farmers from the equation is a smart move. Whether people like it or not, RMT were always going to happen, i'd rather the game be built around accomodating it. If it's judged as P2W, just bring up the fact that the best armors are dungeon currency and karma related, and also refer to EVE.
