UPDATE:
Amazon removed completely from list: [5/10/12]

Quote

It looks like Amazon is only giving pre-orders, not pre-purchases. I will send this up so that they can remove that information from the site. We have no news about Best Buy offering Collector's Editions yet. I can only suggest to keep an eye on the retailer's list, as well as the wiki for any new information about that.

Thanks,
Leslie
NCsoft Account Support

Currently, only GameStop is taking physical pre-purchases.  (as of 4/20/12)

GameStop is only place to pre-purchase the Collector's Edition in the USA.

Latest List!  [last checked links:  5/10/12]

https://buy.guildwars2.com/retailers

[Note:  The links will take you to the regular edition.  You will have to search for CE. Pre-purchase Digital is now an option for GameStop. According to GameStop, pre-order = pre-purchase for ONLINE purchase only.  Pre-purchase physical online for Best Buy is still not up. ]

ArenaNet's USA Pre-Purchase List [my notes updated 4/20/12, 9:00 am CST]
* GameStop - CE
* Best Buy  [digital only]

___________________________________________

Per ArenaNet, the two stores offering pre-purchase in the US are GamesStop [CE] and Best Buy.

Cheat Sheet for Pre-Purchase Bonus in US:

GW2 Collector's Edition = physical GameStop Store and www.GameStop.com confirmed.
GW2 Standard Physical = physical and online GameStop confirmed.
GW2 Digital editions = ArenaNet, GameStop, Best Buy confirmed.

IMPORTANT Update from Martin Kerstein!  4/9/12

Martin Kerstein said:

We understand that customers are receiving conflicting information about whether GameStop.com will support prepurchasing the Collector's Edition.

We've confirmed with GameStop that both GameStop.com and physical stores will offer prepurchases of the Collector's Edition, starting April 10.

Preorders placed before April 10 are not the same as prepurchases. If you placed a preorder before April 10, either online or in a store, GameStop will work with you to convert it to a prepurchase.

We will be getting codes on our receipt, NOT physical boxes!

hyperstalker said:

FINALLY confirmation

"@hyperstalker You will get a serial code on your receipt. ^MK"

https://twitter.com/...510062451064833

dang brought up that the FAQ was wrong and said that it stated you would get a box and they replied that they would change the FAQ. now were getting somewhere.

Here is the official FAQ for questions on what you get with the different versions, and how picking up your codes will hopefully work on April 10:  http://www.guildwars...aq/#forty-three  Note: Confirmed you will get beta code on receipt at most locations instead of a pre-purchase box.

Terms used
Pre-order = Partial down payment on any GW2 edition, gives 1-day headstart
Pre-purchase = Full payment on any GW2 edition, gives Beta access, 3-day headstart, Hero's Band in-game item.

Reserve = Not an official term, used to clarify this is not an official pre-purchase.

USA GameStop Pre-Purchases of Collector's Edition
GameStop.com Online Pre-orders of Guild Wars 2  Collector's Edition (CE) can be transferred to pre-purchase.

"If you placed a preorder before April 10, either online or in a store, GameStop will work with you to convert it to a prepurchase."  - Martin

Other Stuff
According to this tweet by Guild Wars 2:
"...the pre-purchase event is going to continue beyond the tenth. ~RB2" [url="https://twitter.com/#!/GuildWars2"]https://twitter.com/#!/GuildWars2

Last but not least:  Please don't use this thread to vent against GameStop or the entire pre-purchase fiasco.  Use this thread to inform each other what is happening, so we can help each other get what we want.  Thanks so much for everyone's help!

Disclaimer: I am not an employee of GameStop or ArenaNet.  This is purely out of devotion to the game. I'm not responsible for any wrong information, or failure to get desired item, but I will try my best to keep this updated.

This is bizarre news. Now I'm troubled. I don't want to go through hell and back to get my key before the 20th so I was wanting to just go and pre-purchase at my local store.

However if what you say is true then it might be sold out before then.

I'm calling the store at 10:00 CST to get their side of the story...  I also sent an email.

I am not satisfied with this answer, and would like something in writing.

I didn't want this to get lost in another thread.

I just spoke to Zack, a customer service rep at GameStop corporate (1-800-883-8895).

He confirmed that GameStop online does not do "pre-purchase" (ie, they do not charge your credit card until the game is shipped.)

Therefore, a pre-order counts as a pre-purchase, with the caveat that if you do not get your beta code on April 10, you should call them and they will "make it right".
ArenaNet has said that if you aren't paying for the full game at time of ordering , i.e. your credit card isn't charged until the game is shipped, it is not a pre-purchase.

My suggestion would be to do it at a GameStop store and not online. In store you can put the whole price down and your card is charged(at least I seem to remember that it is).

I for one am waiting till 10th to do the pre-purchase in store. If GameStop "sells out" of the CE BEFORE the 10th then there is an issue since according to ANet the CE isn't available for pre-purchase till that date.

Time to buy up as many CEs as possible and resell them at exorbitant rates.

This whole situation is just starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth. I was hoping that that US retailers weren't going to go the route that European retailers took and start chucking around the CE like no one's business, but it seems like this might be the case. Pre-ordering a pre-purchase or a CE before the 10th is just... Ugh.

I have to wonder if Zack really knew the situation, or if he just gave you the standard responses about pre-orders.  I don't know of many pre-purchase deals, so he may not have heard of them.  I'm interested to see what the final clarification on this is.

You realize that the only reason to buy the CE is for the statue.

  • All the in-game trinkets are in the DDE version.
  • The art book (or at least a GW2 art book) is available on NCSoft EU store and Penny Arcarde store.
  • The art items could be printed by anybody.
  • And it's almost certain that the soundtrack will be available for purchase later online.

The GW2 CE have no resell value except for the ~50$ statue...

I'm not entirely sure this is the case, because I've prepurchased Borderlands 2 (which doesn't come out till September), which has already taken the money out of my account, whereas the GW2 CE has not (that I know of.  I'm at work and don't want to open my bank site here, will check later though).

Was your pre-purchase for Borderlands done in store or online?'

Edit: skullmount4, I just checked my bank account and I was charged full. (I had no idea I was going to be.) So just pre-purchased the CE without even knowing it.

There's nothing really NCsoft can do about retailers taking pre-orders for pre-purchase for the CE, so best get orders in asap if you don't want them to run out before April 10th even rolls around.

Agree + the Tincan it came in =P

If people want to support Anet they will buy from official sources - if they want CE's "goodies" and possibly useless access keys - they can encourage financial trolls.

On a different note - I don't think Anet/NCsoft does much better, moneywise, selling CE's then they do selling Digital Deluxes - beyond the fact that its 20$/€ for few added lines of code/storage per account - instead of having to pay third party distributors as well as manufacturers, printers etc for something that may have same profit margin or even lower.

Totalbiscuit will probably say: "hell, dont buy GW2 from these crappy guys at gamestop"!
Well anyway it's kinda smart if this is true of ANet, because this way they will get the sales up even more :)

Just want to correct you that the CE "Making of GW2" art book contains interviews, in addition to art.  It is a new book, and I assume it will be exclusive to the CE.

Online. (always, if possible. I don't want my copy (in the cases of the standard upgrading to limited, etc) given to someone else, which I know happens because my friend was one of them (but he got the upgraded even though he didn't preorder/upgrade))

Man why do distributors always make such a mess of these things? The developer/publisher details exactly how they want the game to be distributed and they STILL manage to mess it up.

I pre-purchased SW:TOR from gamestop and played through the early access. I cancelled before the full release and still got a full refund.

Look at my post on the first page, I confirmed that I got charged full price. So we basically just pre-purchased the CE :)

I know, I checked after writing it up. It's a different book, but you can still buy an GW2 art book online. So if you just want to art, the CE isn't the only option.

Since I already know I'm buying the game (barring the April Fools changes becoming reality) I'm going to make it easy on myself by just preordering direct from the source.  They get all the money, and I know I will get my beta access without a hassle.

I've decided against the CE so I'm not that worried about it. The statue is cool, but not worth the extra money. The soundtrack is a "best of", so that means Jeremy Soule will release the full soundtrack later on, which I will buy. If there were extra in-game emotes/items with the CE, then I'd probably get it.

I'll just order from NCSoft.

This is what I would like also. But that does not work with the Collector's Edition unfortunately. I wouldn't be this concerned if I just wanted the standard edition of course. I guess the best plan of action is to go into the store, do the pre-order asap. Then on April 10, be at the store when the lights go on and get your code. This is only my opinion, obviously.

You haven't gotten charged yet? odd.

I got an email from my bank alerting me of my purchase, I checked my account and I was charged the full amount. Check your bank account. I just got the email less than 10 minutes ago.

Edit: The order now shows up in my order history on gamestop.com. Awesome to hear that Mordakai :)

According to the experience of SWTOR, those canceling pre-order did keep the beta key.

Yes, it is not fair.

Edit, Oh, wait, you guy are saying that credit card is charged? Why not mine, I got the confirming email.

Guys I just got off the phone with Tony, an online representative, and he told me the codes will be distributed via email before the 10th.

Edan1000: The email was from my bank (Chase) this morning. Not from gamestop. So check your bank account or wait for your bank to notify you.
