Joining a squad is just as easy as sending a whisper or a party invite. Simply select a teammate and right-click their portrait. If they’re in a squad, you’ll see an option to join their squad. Click that and you’re in! The commander doesn’t have to approve your request—you can join and leave freely. It doesn’t matter whether you click on a commander or a squad member. You’ll join the same squad as the person you clicked on, so you don’t have to worry about chasing down a commander in order to join a squad. In the party menu on the quick-launch bar, there’s a small squad panel.

There was a bit of information about Squads in the Reddit WvW AMA if anybody wants to read that too.

That's pretty awesome, especially the PVE squads. Hopefully there are ways to forcefully demote commanders. I can see "troll" commanders even if it does cost in-game money to become one.

If you find a troll commander...you just leave that squad and join a new one. That commander will be leading a team of grand total of 1 squad member.

Nothing that we didn't really knew except that you only have to buy the manual once to be a commander again and again.
Great system :)

And I love the picture at the bottom! That sylvari looks sooo cool <3

Yep! I really like how easy it is to join a squad, and I especially like how only the commander can type in the chat channel. It definitely sounds like a good way to promote focus on the battlefield.

Also, that asura armor...

Do want.

How on earth did you know that Squads can be formed in the outer, PvE world also, when participating in large dynamic events?

We knew that the manual needs to be bought only once from the Reddit AMA.

Mike Ferguson mentioned it that in the Reddit AmA as well.

These waypoints tell the squad to do things like' attack here', 'regroup here', and 'bring supply here'. Squads are extremely useful in WvW, but they are also useable in PvE and are the perfect thing for taking down our epic world bosses.

Not a gold sink...

Love the idea, really makes for structure in such an open world without limiting to parties or alliances

This sounds pretty interesting. When I first heard about WvW I thought it would just be a nice extra to mess about in when there is nothing better to do. Now however, I think its one of the biggest things that draws me to the game. The more I hear about it, the more excited I am.

Hmmmmmm

I love the squad system, but I have a couple of concerns.

First and foremost - With the right to purchase "commander" status being reliant on gold, the gem-gold trading system can potentially have great influence.. creating a situation where "noobs" that trade gems for a ton of gold can become commanders. It would be nice if there was some other additional requirement.. maybe total playtime on your account? I'm still thinking about that one.

Secondly, what happens when a commander needs to go afk.. even for short periods of time? Is there a method for "switching" squad commanders integrated into the system? Let's say for example that you have a squad of 30 people running around WvW, having a great time.. and the commander suddenly needs to take off. Does that squad need to entirely disband and then reform a new one? That seems a little clunky - especially if your squad has branched off in several directions.

What if the commander could select from a list of other commander-capable users in the squad, and send them a "request" to become commander. If they decline, they'll have to pick someone else. If they accept, commander responsibilities in that squad are switched. What are your thoughts?

If the commander leaves without manually assigning leadership, or if they get disconnected - what happens then? Should the commander be switched automatically?

The only problem I have with this system is that it may make zerg rushing dynamic events a bit too easy.

It sounds good - the only limitation would be that every server is bound to have a few Commanders that just plain stink at it, but I suspect that people will learn who to follow and who to ignore fairly quickly.

I foresee that the way to make a name for yourself in GW2 PvP will to be a masterful squad leader.
I'm sure there will be a lot of people who will comment about how they think this system is terrible and they hate it, and the reason for that is that the advantages of this system aren't readily noticeable. While it may seem off-putting to not allow members of a squad to use the squad chat to communicate, it's actually better to have just the squad leader use the chat. There won't be conflicting judgement calls that cause the whole squad to go off and do their own thing instead of working together. If a squad leader is proving that he/she cannot lead effectively, the ease at which you can join a new sqaud makes it easy to leave them behind.

I agree with your second point. If a commander has to leave or go afk for a bit, it should be easy for someone from the squad(if qualified) to replace him/her rather than having to disband the entire squad.

Good concerns, the cost for becoming commander is pretty steep. What I think would happen is large guilds basically buying commander status for certain multiple members and maybe choosing one person at that particular time, allowing anyone else to take over if needed.

I am honestly not worried about the gem shop and gold trading at all, especially when after a while you will basically get to know who a good commander is or not, if they used gold gained from the gem shop isnt the issue at all since its our choice to follow or leave.  I can have the most amount of playtime in the game and still make a crap commander.

My only concern is that squad members can't chat back. I'm not particularly sure if scouting is all that important (I'm not sure just how much is shown on the maps) but if the commander wants to ask members of the squad what's going on in an area I think I'd rather them be able to reply in squad chat...I suppose they can whisper him, but still.

Couldn't they just make the Commander's text stand out?

I think it would be neat to have a toggle-able option that allows squad members to chat in the squad, but only have that chat visible to the squad leader. Using a normal chat system would allow too much spam for regular participants to bear - no matter how obvious the commander chat is.

There will be other ways to communicate with the people you are with. I know it's not everyones situation but our guild will be on voice chat anyway, be it in game or on vent/TS3, there will also be other chat channels you can get info to people to

In each team’s portal keep in their home map, and in the major cities, there is a Master Strategist merchant. For a substantial sum of gold, you can buy a manual that grants you the right to become a commander when used. This is a permanent right, so the manual only needs to be bought once for each character. The hefty gold cost is in place because we want to discourage people who aren’t really interested in being leaders on the battlefield from becoming commanders. The high cost also makes it likely that any commander you see knows the game well. We decided that gold would be a more fitting restriction for this than character level, because experienced players who start new characters will still have the gold required to buy the manual.

On paper that sounds good, but from my experience in DaoC and EvE, most of the "squad" chat was taken up by members telling other members to shutup because they were missing the "leaders" posts :P

I think the main point also is if you as a commander are checking in to another area, it would most likely be with another squad, whos commander you would be talking to.

Everyone in ur squad should be pursuing the same goal etc.

sounds very awesome

Might be that I'm a liiiitle bit obsessed with GW2 ;) Yes, it's destructive to stare at the screen half of the day and wish the time goes by... but on the upside I know a lot about GW2 ^^

Do you think the picture is a hint on playable sylvari and asura in the next beta? *wishes for miracles*

I love the idea of squads, but I'm afraid of what will happen to them once "live". Most of the people who will buy the game won't have any idea what these are...

unless we says they are like raid party I guess. :(

Who knows, we might meet squad leaders just as awesome as him while playing GW2.
