From the GW2 official facebook:

"Is my copy of Guild Wars 2 tied to my region?

Yes. To play from North America you must purchase a North American copy of the game. To play from Europe you must purchase a European copy of the game. Note that this restriction impacts where you can play from, not which game worlds you can choose to play on.

By purchasing the correct copy of the game, you're supporting the game in your country, and you'll be connecting to your local data center, using your local customer support team, and downloading the correct language support for your country.

Hey guys, we have some answers and clarifications for you on this, so I thought I'd come over and share them with you firsthand.

First, if you purchase the game from https://buy.guildwars2.com/ you'll automatically be sorted into the right region.

And don't worry -- we want you to play with your friends wherever you are. This policy only affects where you can login from -- not which worlds you can access. People from NA will be able to play with people from EU at launch. We've got two datacenters -- one in NA and one in EU. Those who do not fall into either of those two regions will default to the NA datacenter.

Finally, we are aware that a lot of our players travel, and we are looking into a solution for you.

Hope that helps some!

Thoughts?

Wait, what??

Does that mean that I can't join an European server if I am an American, or am I reading that wrong?

That would be completely bogus. I'm in a European guild, that will be primarily focused in WvW...

This needs re-quoting (again)

You can still play with other people from different countrys. Buying an EU copy won't restrict you to EU servers with other EU people, you can still play with US people. (vice versa if you're a US person who wishes to play with EU people).

So, it doesn't actually affect the game itself. Read closely:

But if I am reading correctly, If I move to NA, and I bought the game in EU, I will need to buy an NA copy of GW2?

WTF? That is really random tbh.

buy the digitally through the website :|

EDIT: I'm assuming all this means is that when u connect, u connect through a US server to the rest of the world. So if lets say u visit Europe, you can still play the game, you just connect to the US server first. From a technical point, this is very very good. Instead of having a set team devoted to just Customer Support, they can at least branch out for each region which allows better support, rather than just one group.

That is just my assumption though. I HIGHLY doubt you would be unable to play the game.

The post even says it doesn't influence which worlds you play ON, just things like where you connect to, data, support, etc.

Going by that wording along, there's absolutely no reason to believe that you'll be region locked in terms of servers.  Absolutely none.  The only region locking appears to be support related.  And did anyone actually expect something different here?

My guess is that this is to prevent the people with overinflated prices from just buying the North American version of the game digitally. I can see no other reason for region locking the game, since it apparently doesn't even affect which servers you play on.

That still counts as a regional sale, we pay in our own currencies.

This is to probably stop Europeans/Uk-ians from buying the cheaper NA version, then playing it in our own countries.

It also tells us quite a bit about GW2 server structure ;)

Will i be able to play beta while am in the US?

EDIT: i dont have a problem buying the EU version. Just want to get this questions clarified!
Also if you go on vacations to another continent why shouldnt i be able to play a little bit of GW2?

Sounds like it's not limiting who you can play with, just what region you can connect from, which seems sort of strange to me.  If there is any circumstance where someone needs to spend extra money just to play their own account because they move to a different country that would be seriously unacceptable.

It's exactly the same, you can pick any server you want.

The restriction is geographical not in-game

However, it is still pretty weird to restrict it as such.

Same as before, this doesn't affect ANYTHING to do with what servers/game worlds you play on. Just where you connect from

So after I finish my studies in the US and want to move back to Europe, I'll have to either start over or quit the game.

What's the point then?

If they choose to region lock the game, they must provide [paid?] region transfers, specifically to avoid the types of problem as above.

Ok well I guess this means I'm not buying the game for a year :( I'm moving to Australia for a year in july if the game comes out in june what's the point of me buying it?

I would be ok with it if there was a small fee or something to change home region but this is going to mess with a lot of people.

This only affects people that buys the game in US and then goes to EU (geographically speaking!), you can't use your US game client in EU... or vice versa.

Thread title/OP editted.

^ I think this indicates some form of region locking. What I got from it is, you can only play on EU if you bought the game there, so if you move to the US you need to buy a whole new account and start over. Unless I completely misunderstood their post.. the wording isn't the best tbh.

What I am really interested in, EVEN IF WE DO, buy a 2nd box to play from the region we move to, will be locked out of our old account, and have to re-roll on the new one?

Regional restriction "on point of sale" we heard that quote weeks ago, just sounds retarded now.

I'm sure you could contact Customer Service and have them change your region in that circumstance.

No, you'll just be connecting to the European data centre instead of the NA data centre. It might affect the speed of your connection and frames but nothing major. Or am I getting things wrong?

All us Auzzies know all about region locking and how it goes in hand with the heavily inflated price of games over here....
So does anyone know what region Oz will be classified under? European?

I think the version you buy is only going to determine the initial login server/datacenter you use to connect to GW2, since apparently it doesn't stop you from playing on whichever world you want.  This makes sense to me, they would want your initial connection to be local instead of connecting to a NA sever while in Australia, for example.
