Morning everyone!

Well my Thief PvP video is now online, you can visit it HERE

First and foremost I'd like to apologise in the delay, I decided to take an impromptu holiday with my family :o

Secondly, it's significantly shorter than the last (just under 50 minutes).

Thirdly, I still love the engineer over every other class! :D

If anyone has any technical difficulties with the video, please PM me.

I hope you enjoy,

Lewis B

Um.. a little at one stage- I really didn't find most of them practical in comparison to other skills.

In all honesty, I didn't really enjoy the profession :(

What was it that you didn't like?
And what is it that makes Engineer the most enjoyable prof. for you? :)

The thief is just too one dimensional, there wasn't anything to it that got me excited throughout my time with it.  I certainly don't think my playing of it is perfect, absolutely far from (I went in knowing almost nothing of the profession), but I didn't feel that a "support" thief really offered anything of real value and felt other classes dealt damage in different but better ways.

Dual Pistols is incredibly repetitive and lacks imagination whilst Dual Daggers just falls too heavily into the traditional backstabbing mold. Shortbow is "ok" for WvW or zipping around the map but feels clusmy at times.  It all very just too unimaginative as a profession and lacks flexibility.

As much as I like steal, even that is a relatively forgettable skill as its main use becomes to stealth you, the fact you obtain something to use later, that you have no ability to analyse, also means you can leave yourself overly exposed just by using it.

I played the thief for half a day and not once did I find I was enjoying myself.  This is all personal opinion though, some people will love it :)

Alright, I see. Thanks!
Still not sure whether I should get a thief, necro or mesmer as main. :|

Anyway, on topic. Great video. :D

This was very disappointing to read.  I was really looking forward to playing a thief.  Hopefully I'll think differently when I get to play.

Dear Lewis,
why don't you use C&D more often? I've seen many footage of thief players who spam that in 1v1 and get perma-stealth + strong dps.
Sounded like an OP mechanic imo, so maybe you were just trying to show a wider variety of abilities and not just a soon-to-be-fixed OP spell.
Or it just didn't fit with your trait choices?

I was wondering about this too. You almost never used C&D, was it deliberate?

Needs some serious audio mastering for the intro, but otherwise nice footage. Thanks

Several reasons really, :)

  • A lack of understanding of the dagger skillset
  • A high initiative cost to use it
  • Retaining its use as a form of escape, not just attack

It sounded fine in Vegas, I'm not sure why it's so quiet now :)

Bloody hell.
The reason why I wanted to make a thief was for the variety that initiative brings, but this sounds like the crap that I hoped wouldn't happen.

I did absolutely adore dropping caltrops when you dodge though. I really wish the thief would have been more about concepts such as this and less about spam and stealth.

Those numbers :D Huge crits are around the same as a Hammer warrior, very nice damage dealer.

The build seemed nice. Can you remember what sigils / jewels / runes you had on?

Best video yet. So many combos you could have done with your skills though, would've been fun to see you pull them off in those tough situations.

Hmm... I was thinking of making a thief for my 1st character, seems to of gotten mixed reviews, and you've made some good points on the negative aspects of it. Guess I'll just have to try it out for myself.

Shadow Trap would have been quite handy before leaving a control point. Capture a Point, put down the ST at a point where the enemy has to run over when they want to recap it and you would have been back in time to defend it, thx to the shadow step and stealth.

About your last sentence, the video felt sometimes "boring to watch" in comparison to your Ranger and Engineer one. Might have been because you did not enjoy the Profession at all or because i only like certain aspects of the Thief which were not shown. :)

Were you just blindly using Steal and the Stolen Skills, or did you carefully choose your targets for both? You never checked the Skill Texts in the video, so you either memorized all the Stolen Skills beforehand or just used them out of the blue and see what happens. :)

Shadow Trap is, most of the time, instant death for the thief.  Sure its great for the circumstance you describe but it doesn't allow you to assess how many people tripped it.  I died countless times in the beta because it zipped me back to my trap only to find 3 or 4 people waiting for me...ouch.

As for steal, I was timing its use- the stolen item however I only remembered about 5 or 6 items, there are dozens.  Where "boring" is concerned, that's subjective- I found the class very dull, others might love it :)

Thanks for the footage Lewis.

Now that you've tried the prof, i'm happy that you found by yourself all the reasons why we're complaining about the profession from the dawn of times.

Your analisys is basically what we were and still ARE talking about: the proff is overall bad.

IMO, usual MMO stealth gankers players will like it, but all the guys looking for the "innovative concept" aNet said the thief would have been , should really look at other proffs.

At least until aNet undesrtand their mistakes regarding the class :D

Anyway, thanks again :D

I think that's 'shadow refuge'.

A nice video, sad to hear that LewisB found the professions so unremittingly dull to play - I had high hopes for the thief.  I think I will look closer at the Ranger as a profession from here on.

since you used it during the Beta, was there a range limit on the Shadow Trap? Or was it able to literally teleport you from one end of the Map to the other? How far away were you from the Trap when someone triggered it and you were ported to it?
