Quote

We’re days away from the first Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Event, and it’s no exaggeration to say that we’re as eager as all of you for the event to begin. While the developers are busy preparing the game, we here on the community team are keeping busy by keeping all of you, our Guild Wars family, informed, with help from a few popular social media outlets.

I think they want to tell us. Like us on facebook so we can use you as a free marketing tool and then communicate with us only via twitter b/c we don't have to write too much there.
This is how I feel about ANet's "relationship with fans" right now.

I miss the times where they informed everyone at once by, y'know, updating their own site.
Like now! Only they'll tell the details elsewhere.

Agreed. I know the common meme to this point has been “shut up and take my money” but I didn’t expect they would take the shut up part quite so seriously. Oh well, "be careful what you wish for" and all that.

I am actually too quite disappointed by their attitude. They must have known the date for the first BWE much sooner than they have told us, just as they do know the date of "client release" yet, they are withholding the information for longer than necessary. I have troubles understanding the reason behind that.

I refuse to be a free marketing tool with such attitude. If they were telling us truth, I would not have na issue with that.

They still use the website for bigger announcements.

They do seem to be pushing Twitter and Facebook a lot lately.  As much as I like the game, though, they are not going to get me to sign up for either of these social networks or any like them.  Call me old-fashioned, but I would prefer that they stick to their website, fan forums, etc. relations.

I'm a bit miffed they put about how pleased they are with twitter communications when lots of fans complained about how crap it is that they used it as the primary customer support thing during the pre-purchase.

Whatever, I just want to see that concept art, I could care less if I am being a "marketing tool". Thanks for the link.

Anything this week that isn't the client and BWE gets a resounding "I don't care".

An ASCII is an ASCII for me. Why do people care so much if it is in a website news section, a forum sticky, twitter line or a facebook page?

What a pointless blog post. Don't tell me they think this will cover for not sending out the beta client yet.

Wait... what's everyone's problem? Help me understand what's wrong with publicity on facebook. Twitter is an easy Q&A format... It's almost like having a irc chat with ArenaNet.

I don't see what everyones issue with facebook and twitter are. What's the difference between typing their twitter URL and the ANET blog URL? Absolutely nothing. I'm not a twitter user myself, but when I want to know something is it really so hard to just go to Twitter rather than the blog? No. I couldn't care less that they're using it as a tool to distribute information and communicate with fans. While some of you who complain do not use Twitter, there are a ton of people that do. I have facebook and I don't even follow ANET, GW2, or anything related for that matter. Everyone uses Twitter; artists, companies, developers, politicians. I'd suggest you just get over it and head on over to their Twitter ;)

I think everyone is just a bit too obsessed over the game. You're practically desperate feral dogs jumping at whatever they'll hand you. Yeah, I'm sure they did have a release date for the beta and I'm also sure they have a full release launch date. I'm also under the impression we get dates when they feel we are ready to get dates. Do you really think they would with hold information just for fun? Right now they're spending money, not making it (Aside from pre-purchase). Everyone needs to just relax, you'll get dates when they come, you'll get information when it comes.

They could do well to stop forcing themselves onto their fans via Facebook and twitter and just get their damned forums up and running and update their main site; it's absurdly out of date. A post like this on their blog is almost insulting. We love ANet, we can't wait for GW2 to be playable, but that doesn't mean we should be exploited. We will get annoyed eventually.

Trouble is not all questions can fit into the word limit and they don't reply to a lot of tweets.

I admit the world limit is a tad annoying, but can you really expect them to answer every single tweet sent to them?

Spoiler

I can't put it any better then that. I also can't remember the last time I or anyone I know used a games actual website for information apart from the main forums. Almost everyone uses facebook or twitter, even though of us who complain about the people on them but constantly refresh the main page to see what they're saying. Anything posted there will be posted here almost instantly and that's about the best way to get information to most of us quickly.

Yes for fun. I don't need an official confirmation on thursday (or whatever the day it was) that the BWE will not be that week. Anyone with half of brain can deduce that. Pretending they did not know until then feels like being treated like a fool. You need to arrange A LOT for BWE, therefore you must know the date much sooner - monday at latest. Claiming otherwise is just being dishonest and that is not cool.

C'mon, guys, don't stress about it.

We're their core audience, the people who actually follow the game.  They know we care, and they care too.

But we're not, and we can't be, their only audience.  They have to reach many people who didn't previously give a **** for the game to be a commercial success.  And the game has to be a commercial success if there's to be further content released in the future that will allow me to enjoy GW2 for many years, or if it's to inspire other companies to make the same decisions that are making GW2 great.

They use social networking to spread the word?  That's great for me in the long run.  So stop stressing, and let the masses work their magic.

They have a support page if it's major and needs to be seen. The GW2 twitter page is for answering smaller questions, mainly. How could you answer every question second of all? There are so many questions that are answered on the FAQ thrown at them, stuff will be missed.

"Many people use twitter and facebook"

But are all of those many people also interested in GW2?
Apparently not, comparing the "likes" to the 1 mill beta applications.

Concerning Twitter Q&A, I don't follow it.
But from having read what others say about it, they only answer the same damn questions that are covered in the FAQ, instead of telling them "See the FAQ" and replying to questions that are not covered in the FAQ.

No but I expect them to respond to urgent tweets asking actual questions over tweets going "oh my gosh I'm so excited about this game!". Don't think that's too much to ask really.

I'd prefer a professional company over a friendly one any day.

The problem is that real problems get ignored while they spend all their time retweeting fan projects and patting themselves on the back. Twitter is fine for when you want to waste time, but using it for anything important is indefensibly moronic.

Yes they do, and do they use that properly? I think not. If you send them an email they wait 5 days then said you a generic email that has nothing about your email. Which then means they clearly havent read your email. Once you email them back about this you have to wait a further 5 days by which point you've given up and done something else.....
