Yaaaay, another "I want ugly characters" and "take options away from those who like beauty" thread.

no one says anything about taking away options but adding more...if 95% of the characters are beautiful and young it takes away from the atmosphere and makes it bland...beauty becomes bland very quickly especially if you dont have both ends...think of it that way, having us ugly ones (and with ugly i mean character faces with edges) around, makes you the more beautiful...

i want to be able to create a character that has edges, that stands out, thats a square-head with a character face as we would say in german...

i simply rather want my character to look like viggo mortinsen, gerard butler or harrison ford

and not like ryan reynolds, brian seacrest, christiano ronaldo or baptiste giabiconi

i want dirt

ps: yes there is the one clint eastwood human male face but imo that looks way to distinct like clint eastwood (who pretty sure was the model)..i allready see 1/3 of the mal humans running around with that face...

pps: games that have a better character creator - well a good example would be skyrim, but i assume you mean other mmo's? okay imo: tera, aion, perfect world (you have to take into account its free and old), apb, continent of the ninth, champions online (okay you cant count that fully because its a bit special)

but here some videos:

-> apb's creator is pretty much the sickest i have ever seen, thats what i call CREATION

The cc is okay for me, though I can't help laughing, looking at the male heads and faces for humans. They don't look like models either.. more like those cheesy looking guys from tv soaps, or salon catalogs/pictures...  I also couldn't make the female human I wanted.  Norn was okay for me, charr I haven't tried, but I won't complain from what I saw.

I think character creation is pretty damn good. Not as good as Aion, but better than TOR and TERA, the most recent AAA titles to compare to.

I was disappointed at some things. Like not being able to adjust the height of the eyes, spacing of the eyes, position of the mouth on the face, etc... However, I think that these limitations are likely a result of the chracter facial animation system. The facial expressions and lip syncing may have been a mess if certain features could have their positions adjusted.

The other disappointment was how many of the Human Female faces look like little girl faces. A couple would be fine, but it seems the majority look like little girls or even dolls.

Lastly, the sliders only give so much latitude, with few ways to completely change the look of the face from the default. In order to get close to the character you want, you sometimes have to experiment with different base faces and hope you can adjust from there, rather than the base faces just being examples that can be achieved from any face via sliders. Want A eyes, with B nose and C face shape? Probably out of luck.

So, yeah, there are some limitations I wish weren't in place, but I still have to admit CC here is far better than most MMOs, even if I do have some level of disappointment.

I too wasn't happy with the female faces, mainly human though the norn were almost as bad, in that they all looked like little girls with fat cheeks that were hard to change. Lack of a separate makeup layer was disappointing too. We should be able to tint makeup with the dye system to match outfits depending on the makeup we chose at facial creation, eg heavy or medium or light or subtle or none.

I'd like to see the following done though it won't happen. Too close to release for that.
  • More face textures, slightly older, younger, ethnic
  • Makeup layers. heavy, medium, light, subtle, none - controlled by dye system
  • Some body sliders to adjust the base bodies you can choose a little bit. waist, breast, hips, maybe overall musculature.
  • Norn eye focus spot moved away from the face a bit to remove slight crosseyed look...someone scaled up the body but forgot to move the focal point out from the head to compensate is my guess.
  • Few more eye colors.
  • Few more body patterns & face patterns
  • Few more hair styles and colors

Yep. If even the NPCs in the game that are supposed to be old are just young people with grey hair, there's something amiss.

Another thing:

Match the eye colour square selection with the display. When I selected a colour, the eye didn't look like that colour. It was neon-like or too dark... I was kind of frustrated for not finding a nice green for my character's eyes. This is in addition to what almost everyone has said around here.

The only thing I don't agree are the sliders. For me they're fine, since I don't want any "monstruosities" around like in Aion. I'm all for ugly/realistic characters, but not monstruosities.

One word: Beta.

We know that there is a "very old" character model, it's very likely ArenaNet just hasn't got around to implementing it on the majority of elderly NPCs.

why? why would you keep one specific model not implemented? and why would there only be one specific "old" model? i don't know...but sooooooooooooooooooooooo many times i have heard that sentence - its only beta, its gonna be all different after release - and honestly, not once it was... especially considering that this game should be 97% done at this stage

You clearly don't know what 'beta' means.

Something purely visual like a "older" NPC model isn't at all vital to the game; it's polish. You don't bother with the polish until you've dealt with all the mechanics issues and are close to releasing the product.

At the moment, all ArenaNet needs are NPCs so they can see what towns look like with them there and access the performance with so many NPCs around. It is much easier to tweak when all the NPCs are near identical than if you've gone and customized a bunch of them.

i do know what beta means - but the term beta can be applied differently - anet has stated they pretty much want to show a finished game in their beta's....of course it can be that this all changes to the release but in this case i doubt it..i doubt they would invite bascially everyone to a nearly finished product if half of the polish wasn't on...well its great if youre right and after release everything will be so much more polished...but i honestly doubt very much we will see a lot changes to the areas that we could visit during the bwe - i think the rest of the programming time they will spend on areas we havent seen, sylvari and asura and optimising the engine from the test event results they got

I completely agree with the OP!

After playing in the BWE and seeing how many things the game has done right, the character creation was one of the most glaring disappointments.

The limited body options (for humans at least) are too similar and don't offer enough variation.  This could be fixed by having body sliders to adjust shoulders, chest, waist, hips and legs independently.

While I find most of the current face options to be appealing, many of the choices seem quite similar, and the adjustment ranges from the facial sliders seem rather limited.

In addition to the limited appearance options, the characters also looked too much like plastic dolls.  Even when moving, the bodies (or parts of them) seemed too rigid.

Not many, really. City of Heroes & Champions Online, certainly. Out of the ones with the same main character generation method (ie, choosing from set faces and hairstyles), GW2 tends to stand tall due to the addition of sliders and a choice of physiques.

EDIT: Personally, I don't get why some people seem desperate to have old and/or fat characters (ie, characters that, contrary to the story, aren't just starting their career, wouldn't be hanging around mostly 20-somethings, and would be totally unsuitable for an adventuring life...)

Most options are behind the well-hidden right arrow that most people here will have missed. Red hair was definitely available.

Do you ever actually see your character in Eve?

Only when you boarded another players ship or something, I've never actually played it.

But that's even more of a reason for Arena Net to want to at least be on the same level.

Thought the character creation was ok(ish).

Would have liked a separate option for Norn facial tattoos.

Some complexion options for Humans (texture not colour) would be just dandy as well. Can't stand all the shiny perfect skin they have.

Charr all in all pretty super as it is.

Agree, they are not as good as I have anticipated them to be. There are certainly room for improvement where character creation is concern.

1) hair length
2) tattoos placements
3) general makeup like blush, eye shadow, lips, facepaint, etc*
4) overall colors aren't nearly enough to choose from.
5) body size, 5 is a joke.
6) not enough ready made faces to choose from
7) non-combatant accessories**

* make available a face paint slots that can be turn on and off for ALL face. Players get to choose at least TWO facepaint#, see i am, yet giving you ideas to make money, so at least we are given some freebies

#facepaint can range from normal facial makeups to a painted cat face with whiskers to chinese opera mask to those grunge looking KISS type of face paint, mole, frackles and etc. each can easily be sold for 200 gems (make account wide please)

same goes to ** accessories.

:P

i simply challenge everyone to look as an example at the cc from apb (or eve, or one of the others i have posted) and dont tell me it lets the one from gw2 look like it was developped by programming students in their spare time? i't doesnt need to be that hardcore and it might be that the options were just limited in the beta (what i dont believe) but i think its good either way that we can discuss here what we want, what not etc. and in case things are still off next bwe, we have a more clearer idea that we can place in the official forum...

While I agree that more could be added to the current character generator, your thread title is so exaggerated that it might not get you the results you're looking for.

What I would like to see added to the character creator:

- more body types (with sliders for muscle definition and breast size if I'm really lucky)
- more faces, particularly faces with definitive ethnic characteristics in the nose, forehead, and jaw (and more sliders for face shape, if I'm even luckier)
- more rugged and/or aged faces
- separation of makeup and tattoos from face selection, or the addition of extra faces with less makeup
- separation between facial tattoos and body tattoos for the Norn
- the ability to dye hair accessories when you dye your armor (because that bright pink headband will look awful against your lime green armor)
- more hairstyles, including more "practical" hairstyles for both female humans and female Norn (ponytails, simple braids)
- hairstyle crossover between female humans and female Norn (more short styles for Norn, more really long styles for humans)

I think that about covers it for me.

I thought it was very lackluster myself, but I had presumed it was due to the fact that it was a Beta.  I will be rather disappointed if the game Launches with the current CC.  While I think my main is beautiful, not being able to adjust the body very much and having rather limited base selections in general is a cripple for those who put a lot of detail in their character.  Considering this game is pushing "your story" so hard, I don't think that we should encourage ANet to slack in this area.  Why wouldn't we expect a very well fleshed-out CC to start our journey?

For what I would like, my thoughts are basically the same as Myrina.  Although (like so many) I want to add alternate voices/pitch to my wishlist..

I agree APB's character creation options were awesome, I spent many hours designing clothing designs. My only problem is all their faces were butt ugly :P But I did love how they handled scars etc, awesome way to do it.

I don't think many games would go as far as what APB did in customisation, and I think GW2 is a bit too close to completion to now have them even implement something close to this, but then again, they did revamp the entire sylvari race even though they were pretty much half way through finishing the game, they may still yet surprise us? Can only wish :)

I am hoping that we are only seeing half the options in the beta and that they have hidden the rest, there is just too few options for the charr horns, I am actually surprised at there being only 7 horn choices for female charr, and most are smooth? I will be baffled if they release the game with only 7 horn choices..

Not going to skim through 10 pages, but EVE Online (for all the fact that you fly around in spaceships!) has the best character generation I have seen, in 15 years of gaming. If Guild Wars 2 had a similar character generation, I wouldn't complain.

Nah, I don't think that there are ever more than a few different ones on the screen at the same time (IDK, never actually played it). However, I can't imagine how that would affect anything. The character models don't need to have a drastically higher polygon count or anything, the creator just needs to allow more customization.

I didn't think the CC in GW2 is bad, but all my characters ended up looking the same because there just wasn't enough variety for me to make a character that I'm satisfied with, The nonhuman races you have the ability to make a unique looking character, but with human and norn there needs to be more for them. For example with the skin color, there's either light skin or really tan, there's nothing really in the middle of that.

well, more movable/customizable parts means more vertices per model, means more poly count though :)
