People choose black mainly because too many believe it is cool looking, not because it is "rare". I have played MMOs in which black wasn't rare and yet it was still the chosen color by many. I, for one, don't find black that cool, especially because it so overused and usually makes armor look rather bland looking. I don't think it looked bland in the example but it also didn't strike me as true black.

Not even just that. In color theory, even if you're using various colors - black , white and grey are all very useful as accents and help with balancing the color scheme. Yea sure, you will have your emos or pre-teens making all black costumes trying to look badass, but black is also a very fundamental color to use when making a scheme.

EDIT: I'm also aware that my avatar is in all black armor. I picked it out because I like the armor design more so than because its black and white.

I'm adding to the discussion by saying there are more reasons for why people will use black. Not everyone uses it because its cool and rare. Some people (not all) will use it and at the same time not create an all black color scheme.

That's a good thread, i found the default color choice to be lacking and underwhelming, especially because i thought you'll really be able to do something "special", but they were just too few of them in the character creation.
SO its nice to see that the game do offer a lot more. Do you need to go through the cash shop or gem to get more color, can you get more with drop only?

You can get them in-game via seeds. However if takes 24 hours PER dye to grow the seed. Currently you can't even grow more than one at a time AND the dyes are not account-wide (like they said they would be). This could all change, but that's how it is as of this last BWE.

Yellow's got a really narrow range compared to most other colors, so that palette will always be limited.

I hope I get white. XD Most of my characters use white with some accent color. I don't get the hate on black, though. A lot of people do all blue, all red, all pink ones, but as soon as one does all- or mostly-black ones, folks start to sneer. It's just a color.

Not to rain on this parade but I think no amount of preview would matter if we do not have to option to preview a color in-game before we decide to unlock it.

This is especially important if dyes are going to be character-unlock only.

The same shade or color can look very different on different armors and materials. It would not be enough to only have a visual list of colors, let alone be expected to rely on sources out-of-game for it.

Of course, this would no longer matter if dyes are account-unlock instead.

Let's say I got a dye, and use it on my armour. Will it then be lost, would I have to buy a new one for my next piece of armour?

No, once you unlock a dye on a particular character you can use it as much as you want. You will need to unlock it on another character to use it on them, though. Unless they go back to their old way.

I still have the choice to unlock the dye I just randomed from the cash shop or sell it off at the TP if I either already have it, or does not like it for any of my characters, or even transfer to another character that I want the color in.

What? How could you get a preview of an item you don't know you could get? The only way it's possible is for them to have a dye guy somewhere that will show you what every dye in the game would look like on your armor. Even then, it wouldn't matter at all. It's not like the RNG cares what it looks like on your armor. It gives it to you anyway. So the decision is either: to buy or not, when talking about getting them from the cash shop.

Well at least "Rare" isn't just "somewhat Black" and "fairly White" of GW1. That and 2-4 dye channels should break up the straight up one rare color. Now if only people would realise that bright, warm colours are there for accent pieces not for burning holes in other peoples retinas.

Okay, suppose I buy a dye pack.
Does it automatically poof unlock the colors for the character I bought it with? Doubtful. What if I bought it straight from the shop while not logged in game? (assuming that's possible).
That makes no sense at all.

No, you would be able to open the dye pack after you buy it and see 3 identified vials of dye in it.
As in you will know the exact names of the three dye you just bought before you proceed to "use" them and have them unlocked on your character.

Here is where a "dressing room" preview sort of tool will be greatly helpful if it is to be character-bound instead of account; before you actually bind it to your character.

It would allow you to decide if this particular color is what you want on this character or another. If it is not at all a color you want, you can then choose to put it up in the market, even if you bought it with gems at the cash shop.

Oh I see. You are speaking of the addition of a new functionality not in the game. I thought you were implying that there is some way with the current system that would allow you to see the dyes before you purchase from the cash shop. Yeah that would work better than the way it works now, for sure.

I agree that would be a very cool addition to the system... but I wouldn't hold my breath, sadly.

On the other hand - dye is a "big deal" to a lot of talented people out there... and you can pretty much assume that within a month or two of GW2's launch, someone will have written a web-based dye previewer setup.  It's just the kind of thing people love to create for a game like GW2.

I really like dyes, so assuming they fix the dyes to be account-wide unlocks as they originally said they would be, I'm the kind of person who would have all of them unlocked within a few weeks of launch - it's something I'm comfortable spending my money on.  I've also got a touch (ok, more than a touch   ) of OCD - so I could see myself spending time creating/deleting multiple professions/races just to take screen shots of the dyes on their starter armors for the Wiki.  I'm definitely NOT the only person who will do things like this, and I'm probably the least dye-obsessed among those who really like dyes. LOL

So I wouldn't worry too terribly much that there is not currently a way for you to preview a particular dye on a particular set/piece of armor.  Someone is going to end up making it their "mission" to make such a previewer.

It may even be me.

Really dislike photobucket with a passion, but thanks for all the screenies. I've not claimed my 2000 gems yet, so in the next BWE I'm definitely going to give the dye packs a try and post some screenies of my own if it's something new.

Does anyone know if there's been official word from ArenaNet about the dye's not being account wide for the moment? The beta forums has been wiped and I can't seem to find any other reference, save for Kirsten's blog post:

Glad I saw your post, Makovorn - prompted me to make sure I upgraded my Photobucket account to Pro so my images don't "break."

The only "official" word we received was on the beta forums when, I believe it was John Smith, told us that the cash shop was still a work in progress.  He neither confirmed nor denied anything specific.  So it's one of those things I think we're going to have to wait and see on.

I will mention that the beta forum thread about the dyes had a lot of response from many many people, all but I think two saying, "if these are not account-wide, I will not be spending my money."

I can think of a few reasons why it may have been character-locked for the beta - it could be something somewhat 'nefarious' like, "let's see if anyone notices/complains...maybe we can get away with this."  But it could also have simply been a matter of there being a valid programming/development reason why unlocking account-wide during beta would have caused failures in other key mechanics.  Often, one of the last things finalized in game development is tying everything into a billing system - this is actually a big part of what I do for a living: build those billing systems and tie them in with games.  I'm always in a mad scramble of trying to work around last-minute changes to the mechanics, UI, etc. to make the billing suite fit with the final build.

So I'm not in a panic about this yet... and I think the player feedback they received on the beta forum about this (and the costumes) was likely enough to stamp out any thoughts (if they existed to begin with) of "let's see if anyone notices/complains...maybe we can get away with this."

OH FOR *S SAKE, don't turn this into another "dye not account wide, promise broken?" thread, this thread should be about the color of dyes and how they color certain armors.

and when buying the 3 dyes from the cash shop for the near 2 dollars, you buy 3 dyes, when you buy them the 3 dyes are in your inventory, already identified. but prior to buying them, you had no idea what they would be.

Yellow is a very difficult color to make. Just a tad off and you have green or orange. There are barely any yellow tints.

Try it on any color tool site.
