Hello, I reached level 18 and noticed anytime I got a new piece of armor other than gloves/helm/shield/weapons the visuals did not change at all. I have the same visuals from armor you start the game with. Am I blind or does it really change but it's hard to notice? Or only complete sets change armor?

Most of the low level stuff is about the same but I do know there is a bit of variety from the ones you get in your personal story. Got 3 types of pieces from that, scale chainmail and one other I forgot about for heavy armor and scale looks very different from chainmail.

I found about 2 different kinds of armor in PvE play and another one can be crafted.

The purpose of beta is not really to showcase the armors types. They might have gave less armor choices so people concentre in more useful things. Anyway, I'm sure at launch there'll be more variety and even more as time goes on.

The vendors that sell armor for gold tend to have two sets with the same skin (like a level 5 and a level 10 version), and I ran across a few drops that also shared that skin. The crafted armors had different skins though, so I guess it's just a question of being low-level stuff (they cannot make it too fancy least you ruin the joy of getting higher level stuff, and there are only so many ways you can vary "plain cloth boots").

I did also find a few different skins from drops though, but maybe I was just lucky. I mostly bought weapons for karma, so cannot speak to their diversity

I'm guessing that the really low lv armor don't have much variety because Arenanet spent a lot of time making so many higher lv armor skins for different levels.
For example each dungeon has three armor sets. One for each armor type. (Light/Medium/Heavy)

The armor you craft have different skins as well.
I'd expect the armor made from copper and the one made from iron to look different from each other.

With transmutation stones you can grab the skin from armor of any level and apply it on any other armor of any level, so long as it's the same type.
That makes for a ton of variety in the long run, when people start matching bits and pieces from different levels for their looks.

Weapons have a lot of variety, too.
For example somebody from Arenanet mentioned (on beta forums) that you could buy a lv 40 Hammer that looks like an Anchor from Lion's Arch and then apply it's skin to a low lv weapon.
...if you farmed a ton of Karma that fast, anyway.

As for what I found in beta the coolest thing was a Focus that left a trail behind it whenever I ran or moved it around in any way.
Seemed like a part of some sort of steam related weapon set. I found a Staff, too, although I don't think that it looked too amazing.
And a Sword, which I couldn't use since I played Necro.

The lower level of 1-15 stuff doesnt vary much. Once I got up to the armors that required at least 25 or so there seemed to be more of a difference, not a big one but there was one none the less. Thinking that they will get more diverse as the game goes on.

most of the karma-vendors in the game only had "a loaf of bread" so I guess most of the vendor stuff is placeholder.

Really? Almost every piece of armor I found had a unique skin/model, the only exceptions were some of the armourpieces that shared names/icons.

They have unique model, they just keep your old dye colour, maybe that is why.

The low level armour isn't very fancy and quite generic anyway.

Crafted level ~10/15 armor was different from what would drop from foes or what you could buy from merchants.

I found a Karma vendor Weaponsmith in the Black Citadel(kinda hidden) which had all types of lvl 80 only  weapons....shoulda screenshotted 0\. In addition , the rewards for doing a Boss fight DE(a dragon) in the swamp, I received a very nice looking (green)scepter.

The karma gear (heavy armor, in my case) I found for level 20-25 in Snowden Drifts looked drastically different than the stuff I was getting up until that point. I was getting kind of bored until then too, but that set looked really nice.

Hoelbrak had T1 (level 35), T2 (level 60) and T3 (level 80) sets as well, which seemed to be Norn racial armor. Charr and Human versions were probably in their hometowns.

Don't forget it's a Beta.

Placeholders will be all over the place to keep the download size at a minimum. Icons don't match up, some Karma vendors only had bread, and so on.

I swapped my starter mesmer gear from some other stuff and visually it didn't change at all. I wasn't sure if I'd just gotten hold of the same set but higher level or I'd bugged or what.

I'd love too. I guess once the game is released you could go see in the wiki and it would be there, but it would be interesting to have a feature like that added
