Back when i played DAoC you had the ability to create and join custom chat channels you could see no matter where you have been in the world. I'd like to see something similar in GW2

Basically what i'm suggesting is that you have the ability to create a chatgroup for WvW. So that no matter where you are you can always keep track on what happens on the "front".
There shouldn't be a limit on how many players can join the chatgroup but the chatgroup should be limited to players on your server/world/whatever-its-called-in-GW2.

Or just be able to create random chatgroups about different topics. So the explorers can have their own chatgroup. The lore people can have their own chatgroup.

It might help to keep local chat a bit cleaner and it doesn't "force" all lore people to be in the same guild/alliance.

Not sure if it's needed but you could add a restriction on how many chatgroups a certain char can join.

This might also make it easier to coordinate in the events without cluttering local chat.

/Signed (I always wanted this, in any MMO, but just a few actually had it)

And it shouldn't be just for WvW, but for any moment in the game. And imo, it shouldn't be limited by the worlds/shards.

The chatgroups should also have some neat functions, such as Voice Communication, and perma chat-group (so all the same friends can review their chats). ;)

And without restrictions. And to join - must be invited by the chat leader, and accept the invite, of course.

It should be limited to shards/worlds if it's used in WvW to avoid spying.

And there could be both limited access ones where you have to be invited by the chatgroup"leader" and open ones. I'm a bit hesitant with limited ones as there's bound to be players left out for whatever reason.

If you have public ones you can't QQ if you ain't get invited. And it'd save you from beeing invited to ones you don't want to join and having to decline.

Yeah but what i meant was more like different chatgroups that extend the available channels. Atm in GW you have Local, Guild, Team, Alliance, Whisper and Emotes.

It'd be nice to have a few more custom options for different purposes. Like coordinating WvW or similar.

Web based would be ok if it's possible to be used in GW2 without the need to alt tab. I'd like to have those within the game like the normal chat channels you currently have. They should be region independant and should work like the regular chat channels.

The main purpose of this wouldn't be to send offline messages to friends or chat while not beeing online. The main purpose would be to organize stuff better in game. Would be especially handy for WvW.

agree, so i wish arenanet can directly embed some current message software like msn into the game, as they have all the features you want:):)

Apologize for necro this thread, but better than creating a new one :P

I always missed custom chat channels in GW1, even MMOs 5 years older than GW1 (ie. EQ1) had more customizable chat channels. It would be nice if you could separate out some 'less important' channels into a separate window, without having to completely ignore it by filtering it.

Custom channels are fantastic for being extremely flexible, and useful. It's nice being able to organize your various streams of text. I'd be shocked if they didn't implement something like this. WoW has fantastic chat controls and options. Add-ons create extra customization, and extend utility options. I don't see why they would omit this feature short of having a better alternative.

Reviving an old idea that I think would do wonders for multiple areas of GW 2.

Having already played the demo, I know some form of separate chat channels already exist.  The two I noticed were Local for just nearby people, and some other for everyone within your zone/map.

I too see the need for custom chat channels.  They can solve a variety of issues with spam in the chat, and can serve to neaten the chat for different styles of players.

If a custom chat is too complicated, too many resources, whatever...then a few key channels need to be reserved within the existing chat system currently in development for GW 2.  We already know the basic chats will exist---Local, Trade, Party, Guild, Zone, Server, Announcements...  On top of these, I have a few more chats to propose that could be joined manually by any user interested, could be filtered like the other basic chats, and could be left at any time.

1. Help-A place for people to post all their general questions about the game and mechanics.  Could possibly extend to profession help.  This way, the people following the Help channel are either those willing to answer questions, or those with questions.

2. Recruit-Beyond the standard zone chat, a recruit channel could really clean up the large amount of messages that will come with new guilds forming in the first month, and could still be beneficial beyond that.

3. Events-Not to sound biased, but it hit me in MantleCon today.  When the community events people do an event, they literally seem to take over the various chats within a town.  In Guild Wars 1, we've had to use Trade chat to get across important event messages.  In Guild Wars 2, we don't have that luxury, because the trade chat will constantly be filled with potential buyers and sellers (I promise you even with a Marketplace, this chat will be flooded).  Also, the trade chat may extend zone, or server wide, so we could be disrupting people on the other side of the world with an event in Divinity's Reach.  I feel the Event chat could be used by a number of community event organizers to add an extra level of flare to a brand new game :)

4. RP-If RP servers aren't in the works, a RP chat channel is all that's needed.  Anyone interested in RP can have it open, and roleplay openly, even if they don't intend to fully roleplay their character.  The personal story options, and the character creation of Guild Wars 2 could allow this to be a widely used channel among any server.

If anyone else can provide a compelling argument for a reason another custom chat channel should exist, I would love to hear your thoughts :)

I have not played DAoC, but when I think about Chat channel, I think about RO and its mess of chat channel all inside Prontera. Explain a bit?

Zombie-ing this thread because I want:

1) Cross-server class specific channels.

2) Chats for WvWvW (for those that aren't in organized vent channels but want to participate).

3) Chats for keeping track of Dynamic Events for those not close to them (assuming world/shout aren't as reliable).

4) Whatever else people could think of using these for.

Edit: I was going to ask if this was in-game in the Question/Answers forum but this suggestion came up as a related topic, so I'm bumping it just in-case it isn't in the game yet.

This indeed needs to happen it would cut down spam in WvW chat and help to organize things even further, definitely /signed on this.  Idk how I've managed to miss this thread so far. :surprised:

Only MMO's I've given a noteworthy amount of time to are WoW, Rift, and SWTOR... all of them had custom chat channels, which I used pretty avidly (mostly for RP).

Not having them would be frustrating... hope this makes it in before launch.

As long as admin/owner of the channel doesn't work like in WoW. Where if you as an admin logout it gives admin/owner to someone else that is in the channel randomly instead of keeping the rankings.

I'm not sure how you could fix the admin/owner thing with chat channels.  Maybe put in channel commands that allow you to select admins and should none of them be online the channel just.. doesn't have one. But then you run along the problem of someone coming in and just spamming (or something equally annoying) just because there's no admin around.

Thoughts? This would be the perfect place to come up with some ideas for that situation actually.

Lets be more clear then, in WoW as a creator of a channel you were Owner&Admin but you could also make other people Admins aswell. So you wouldn't only have one Admin, you could have several.

The issue comes into play, I think, when no appointed admin is online. I think it's a similar issue that was/is in Aion as well, where the channel would give administration to a random person every time the admin left. If the channel was empty it was just gone until someone recreated it.

Is it hard to code or a bad idea to just let the channel remain open as a permanent channel until otherwise deleted or letting it go empty for a given period of time?

I would really LOVE to see the ability to create custom channels in GW2. It makes it a nice way to allow people from different guilds to have their own spots to hang out, and if their going to be alliances, well not every guild is always in the same alliance.

I also very much want this. It is great for roleplayers, but it is also great for anyone who wants to have a cross-guild chat channel for community or "hang out spot" purposes. We can be in more than one guild, but only one at a time, and I feel like people will tend to have a "home" guild, and then a guild for dungeons and/or PvP, etc., whatever for particular purposes.

We all need places where we can chat and hang out that are not tied to what guild we are "in" at any given time. And this is best way to do it.

Beyond that, it's a staple in MMOs now and just needs to be there.

I would like to add to this after playing the game this weekend.  There are not enough chat channels.  Custom chat channels are needed, and maybe coming later.

I also think there needs to be an officer chat for a Guild.  It was in LOTRO, and is very useful.  For instance, if there is somebody new in the Guild, it is nice to ask questions about them in officer chat rather then guild chat.

Not to mention useful for discussing future plans without starting rumors as well as handling any guild related drama.

I was surprised this wasn't already in the game last BWE.   Having an officer chat with permissions toggle for ranks is a must.

This. I found this thread doing a search to see if there was a custom chat channel function in the game. Officer chat is very much needed so that officers can plan or act in an informed, coordinated way.
