I have friends playing mezmer, engineer, elementalist and ranger.   What do you feel is the best compliment to this group?

I'm not very interested in the guardian class, too many people are going to be playing the only "tank" class.  I would rather play a warrior, thief or necro.  I'm open to suggestions though.

Thanks

Whichever one you want honestly. Completely depends how you and your friends want to put in your traits.

If your engi and ranger are building tankyish like I suspect, I'd run the warrior or necro. Either of them can roam around with the elementalist trying to take objectives/swooping in on the team fights that the other 3 are holding, and just do insane damage together. I think thiefs are too squishy without full team support and are probably traited best as support at this moment so they wouldn't do well in a 2 man group. And by support I mean poisons and other conditions, not healing.

Anyways, that's just what I think based on 2 and a half days of beta and exploring traits a ton.

A lot could be said on this topic. But the short answer is, really, any of them could work very well with that group setup. The bigger thing would be how each of you decided to build your respective classes. And making sure those builds had some synergy together.

Basically, find which of those 3 you enjoy the most and go with that. And even if you discovered you liked 1 of the other 4 classes more, you could have 2 of the same class and it likely wouldn't hamper the group.

any class would work...you could even pick a class one of your friends picked, it doesnt matter...
as far as i could tell, every class can do everything, but differently. so you could go ranger dps..and ranger tank ( yes no trinity..just a dumb example here..) heck, you could even all role only engineers and complete the game with this lineup..

if i look at the classes in old style i see only ranged classes for your friends there..so go warrier or thief XD but thats only true if you apply old mmo standards to such a thing^^ afterall the ele could do melee, too etc.

Thanks for the input.  I'll ultimately roll what feels "right" to play.   It looks like I'll play a warrior.  I need a few more betas to know though.

a hammer warrior is what i played and the cc from it made most the people i played with who were at range happy. but if you just spam cc for "them" and not yourself, you can find yourself out of energy to dodge and no way to interrupt your enemy if there about to use a big attack.

i think when played right the hammer warrior is insanely good. if i was out of dodge and cc was on cd, i would switch to my bow and use the 5 skill that rooted them in place, and kite them for a while until i my hammer skills/energy was back, or the enemy got back on me quickly.

but honestly..every class can do this with difefrent methods...this is not warrier only...

I foresee condition removal to be more important in high level dungeons, etc so I would say a Necromancer or Guardian. The Necromancer could be specced to inflict conditions as well and provide quite a bit of debuff/spike damage as a result. The Guardian could heal the group and administer boons to your group, which may be just as valuable in higher level dungeons.  In the end, the previous posts are correct and any class could work well for your group of friends. EDIT: Forgot to add that you said you were disinterested by the Guardian, nevertheless that was my food for thought.

Guardian is not where near a tank. It's more a healer/support than tanky. IMO

Tbh professions are all so versatile in this game we can't really tell. All profession can fill so many roles right now that your team could be all dps, all control or mixed and that would change my answer a lot.

Without a few tips about what you like or what your firends intend to do it's almost impossible to tell what compliments best. I'll go with Necro because I played this prof a lot and I loved it, but that's it lol.

I'd either go mesmer or ele... doesn't matter if one is in your group already.
Of course, I like mesmers and ele's so perhaps it's better not to ask me ^.^

Tbh I would go guardian... I didn't say that above because you specifically said no guardian. Not because it's what the group needs but because not only do I personally have lots of fun with guardian, but it would also allow your group to see most of the personal stories, if you all care about that kind of thing.

Yeah I know what I like isn't going to be the same as what you like, but since I don't know what you like, might as well just say mine.

Picking your class is less important than choosing your weapon/trait set.

I run a support warrior in my standard group, something akin to this: http://gw2.luna-atra...0fj1o282b2i2s30

While I'm sure I wouldn't pop high numbers on a personal parser, I'd bet good money the overall effectiveness in both the increase in damage and survivability of the team as a whole more than makes up for it.

Anyone who thinks guardian is a tank class is in for a rude awakening.

Anyone who thinks that tanks will exist Guild Wars 2 hasn't been paying attention.

Can't go wrong with Guardians for support. Engineer is pretty good too.

Guardian: Boon/protection/party resolve beast
Ranger: Permanent maintenance of the Warhorn buff with 2 rangers.
Elementalist: 2 Elems to bombard the enemies from behind or 1 staff elem and 1 in dagger/dagger.
Mesmer: 2 mesmers with Warlock Phantasms + massive boon/debuff spam from staff.
Thief: Set up combos with poison/smoke fields, Elem has a LOT of blast finishers, which is easy stealth to the group with smoke fields.

Haha, nice.
He does have a point, though.  Most of us are going to do better with some classes than others just from a purely play style point of view.  If you have preordered, you should use your time in the BWEs trying everything on those classes to find the one you most enjoy and/or are good at.  You will be the most help to your group when you are playing a class well, not when you have the "perfect" class for the group.  Although ,if you like them all equally, I would go Warrior or Thief.  Engi and Ele are purely ranged (Ele d/d is very short range, but still range).  Mesmer is mostly ranged, and Ranger is about half ranged.  You have a lot of ranged in that group already.  It would be nice to have a mobility based Thief or Warrior to keep mobs busy while your friends attack them.  Of course, this could just be my game play preferences coming out.  I am a whore for mobility and speed.

Your party lacks a heavy-armor class.  Warrior or Guardian would naturally round out the group.  Since the only input about yourself you have given us is that you don't want to play Guardian, then I will have to recommend Warrior.

in a fight where multiple combatants are participating

nothing, and I mean this, NOTHING will be a greater force than a SPIRIT BUILD Axe+Horn ranger

the Axe is the unbalancing factor simply because you can hit all the enemies due to ricochet.. throw in the pet and spirit buffs and what you have is your team winning any head-to-head battles

Other than stating the obvious that you should play what profession you want to play...I think how your teammates use their professions could go a long way in figuring out what weakness/void can be patched up. This can be done with any profession, of course some do specific roles better. If I had to speculate I would go with the other professions not used by your friends. That leaves you with the Warrior, Thief, Necromancer, and the Guardian.  I personally choose one of the soldier class, Warrior or Guardian.

Given how the new combat system works, you could play any profession (even one they are playing) and compliment the group.
That being said, there are no soldier classes in that list so either a Guardian specc'd for Support or a defense specc'd warrior would help.  However you could go with any build with those two and it could work out.

The important thing is that people do not double up on similar skills.  A guardian should go hammer if the engineer is going pistol/shield with tool kit as an utility (the enemy would be being knocked back the entire time with little direct damage.)
