I am currently debating on four classes to use for PvP (I know I could make all of them, but I am to lazy and only want to focus on one).
Necromancer
Thief
Engineer
Ranger

I have heard many good things about these classes, and many bad things. IMO I think that the necro will be best at PvP because of the debuffs they put on their target. I have also heard that the rangers are currently the most OP in PvP. Will it all come down to personal preference sooner or later?

GW2 is easier to balance than GW1, so it'll get balanced somewhat wthin a month or two of release.  So don't worry about "better" so much as what suits you.
Fun while it lasted.  I guess.

Topic is subjective. There is no "better" profession, they all bring something to the table. Whatever you like the most you should play.

P.S. Play the warrior.

Try them all in the next beta weekend? You can just hop into the Mists, change traits/gear and get into some PvP.

There won't really be a clear cut "best", because PvP is a big component of GW2, and therefore so is balance. Some classes need tweaks, but some of it is also players needing experience. Play what you like.

No such thing as the best class, one day humanity will realize this. Play what you find fun, and let that be the end of it. And, oh, the warrior is the best.

You actually have to put forth effort to die as a Necromancer.

For WvW or Spvp?

Ranger or Necro I would say. Engineer has only a few temps that are good currently, unless they fix their kits of course.

Currently, with the self buffs rangers get I don't see why you would play a thief which has less hp. (unless there is some amazing thief build I am unaware of).

I suspect Ranger and Warrior cool down speed reduction buff will be nerfed and ranger will be less amazing.  But as is right now I would suggest Ranger or Necro.

If you want an actual answer:

1) Ranger
2) Necromancer
3) Thief
4) Engineer

That's also the list of "most likely to be nerfed" in descending order.  If you reverse the order it becomes "most likely to be buffed" so the real answer is that Engineer will be the most OP class in retail.

Ya, seriously there is no best it's an impossible question to answer. Each one is better at something else than the other and it's all situational. It also all comes down to player skill.

But ya, warrior.

Going to report my post that i did in another thread

To add in my input it is very, very, VERY hard to compare professions in Spvp based on a basis of "who is better", this is because

each profession has their own mechanics
each profession deviates into different roles better
each profession has different weaponsets
each profession will obviously be better at a certain area or aspect of gameplay

Comparing professions in this way is just.... utterly.... useless
Comparing the usability of builds and how effective they can make them compared to other classes however, is a different story

I actually never saw a decent thief..
They just did some damage and died in seconds because they all traited in that ridiculous crit dmg build and had absolutely no def/hp :D
A thief never got my balanced warrior under 75% before I killed them.

Theoretically: All classes are equal.

Realistically (as they are presently in the beta): This.

Necros and engineers can't kill shit right now (but that's part of their design). Necros have amazing survivability though and that will let you rack up the points as you can capture and defend a lot of points on your own.

I personally like the necro best from that list. If you want to be dealing massive damage, then the thief or ranger would be a better choice. It all depends on your playstyle. The only profession that seemed kind of underpowered in the last BWE was the engineer, but that's probably because no one knew how to use it.

sPvP:

Without question warriors and guardians will make up the brunt of a 3-person split, and TBH I see the first real 3 person train as 2 warriors, one guardian.  The question is, what about the 2 and 1 person groups?  Because warriors without a guardian for condition removal won't be very effective when (if) they get balanced out, and guardians generally suck at winning 1v1.  I'm going to say "anything" in the other groups, maybe slight bias for fast professions like thief/ele/ranger.

Edit: But yeah, if we're talking about random sPvP, previous statement stands

I've seen OP mesmers, OP necros, OP rangers, OP guardians, OP thieves, OP eles, OP warriors... and yes even a couple of semi-OP Engis (think these should be buffed a bit tho).

Every class has a strong PvP build, so no, there is no "better" class, we are all OP in a sense.
And I love it.

They could also have them buffed for this BWE and nerf them until the next BWE.

I like how in your statement, you judge a class as "cant kill shit right now" and claim that as their "natural part of their design" based on people that dont know how to use a class.

If you are basing a profession solely on bad players that dont know how to use it and claim its underpowered because of said bad players, your just as bad as they are

Ill say it again:

Warriors will be 'nerfed' probably in two "rather obvious" ways.  Haste/quickness will also be likely adjusted (effecting Warrior, Ranger and Thief) and probably be related to the multi-hit abilities or just a general duration decrease.  Certain Runes will either be removed or reduced dramatically (effecting basically all classes except Elementalist).

For some reason, many people are not using the "burst" builds from Necro and Engineers.  It's all condition or pet (IMO turrets are basically pets) based.  But inherent in both class designs, they both follow the same tendency to build for beating opponents through attrition (conditions, pets or supporting allies to do the same) while maintaining superior CC/defense.

FYI - Engineers need a range buff (without talent investment).  They have basically one viable burst build but it is in melee range (and spam-boring).  IMO, Engineers should feel like a cross-between Necros and Elementalists but they currently lack the Elementalist part (why should Engineers frequently swap when the current talent system/builds encourages specialization - unlike the Elementalist).  Basically, it comes down to a awkward build design flaw with Engineers.

I didn't play either, but I played against plenty. Most of them were very bad at dealing damage (you could literally ignore them in a group fight). You're right though, it's very likely that most players were noobs.

I dont lurk the engineer forums much, just not very often, your best bet to find something like this is to go into the engineer subforums and check this thread: http://www.guildwars...d-on-beta-info/
Doing a search for "Teldo"
Or doing a "Teldo" search in the engineer forums lol
