I've searched all over for the "Checking for Updates" issue at the beta screen.

I had MS Security Essentials with only windows firewall running but killing both of those (and any services/processes related to security) did nothing.

Updated graphic drivers and followed all the suggestions to no avail.

For those stuck with this, here is what worked for me.. hopefully it helps others:

1) Make a shortcut of gw2.exe, go to properties for that shortcut, and in the shortcut tab in the "target" field add " -diag" (so the field looks like this: C:\Games\gw2\Gw2.exe -diag).

2) Run the diag and check for the "= Checking server connectivity" section.

3) If you see a bunch of "connect failed" errors, you likely have the same issue.

4) Open up the windows command prompt (you need to run as administrator so you may need to dig through c:\windows or system32 and look for cmd.exe).

5) When the window pops up, type in "netsh winsock reset".

6) It may say the computer needs to restart but mine did not.  I did nothing other than double click on the gw2.exe and it now started right away



For all those who don't have AVG, Norton, or McAfee or any firewalls running but are still getting this, I hope this works for you as well

I was on a Toshiba Satellite laptop on Vista 32bit if that's worth mentioning.  I tried earlier on my daughter's XP desktop and it worked with no issue.  May be a Vista, laptop, or general tcp/ip funcification (technical term) issue.

Can't wait for this weekend!  Beta weekend on my birthday?  Sweeeeeeeeeeet

Out of curiosity, what was the level of UAC (User Account Control) and when you launched the game the first time, did you get a pop up from windows firewall asking you if you wanted to let the connection through? Also, did you take a lok at the windows firewall settings? Not saying you did anything wring, just curious. I'd test this if i still had vista, but unfortunately i don't.

On #4, open the start menu, type cmd in the search bad, right click on cmd, run as administrator. Much easier than digging through system files.

I de-activated firewall and it worked for me in the first BWE, it might help

First of all let me tell you Windows firewall is a joke, second chances someone will hack random person is ridiculous. Unless you are "important" to be spyed upon or hacked turn that off it causes only troubles !
Just get a decent enough Antivirus program and you will have no troubles, firewalls aren`t best thing you can use on your PC !

Yep, I got prompted, told it to unblock, prompted to run as admin, also agreed.

The account I'm logged in with is an Administrator.

Windows firewall had a clear exception for gw2.exe.  I even went so far as to kill the entire service (as well as windows defender) and stop any related processes in process explorer.  Per the -diag output, everything was running fine aside from being able to connect to the IPs listed in the connectivity section of the output log.

Looks like either something that shipped with this Vista install messed up the tcp/ip layering or something I did in the last 2 years or so did it.

Did everything exactly the same on an XP desktop and it worked immediately.  Really weird.

It's downloaded though and ready to go now.. can't wait

I did the netsh winsock reset and even after that and restarted, I still have connection failed errors in the arenet section. Ive played in both previous beta's without any problem, I guess Anet just doesnt want me to play in this beta.

i Tried and it didnt seem to help at all i want to be able to run guild wars without deactivating my firewall but so far thats my only solution i need to figure out if i can turn off my fire wall to open the program and then turn back on once i log in

I followed these steps exactly as well as disabling my Windows Firewall. I had to do a reboot and now instead of seeing the launcher screen with 0KB/sec, I just see a minimized game icon which I can't restore. I fear I may not be able to get my head start Saturday :-(

Since this is the best solution topic that can be found in the search engines, I decided to add to this here.

Note that the OP's solution did NOT work for me; however, the following solution did. This was for my Windows Vista 32-bit (worked fine on my Windows 7). First I disabled ALL anti-virus/firewall software (Windows Firewall, Windows Defenders, McAfee etc. etc.). Then I went and did Task Manager and manually closed processes related to anti-spyware/firewall features and then THIS part is what was important:

I clicked the start menu (bottom-left), searched "Run" (for the Run program), Entered services.msc in the Run dialog box. Gave permission to edit (I'm assuming you must have User Account Control turned on). Then I went through every service and stopped all of my firewall anti-virus crap, but the one that made the difference was this one: Base Filtering Engine. I turned that off (and it turned off someone other things automatically that can't run without it) and I was able to run it with no problem! Note that I do not know how exposed this actually leaves you to the internet, but I decided not to browse while I was downloading.

I hope this helps somebody!
