Interview with Daniel Dociu, about himself and Guild Wars 2

Quote

Tim Edwards: How did you start in concept art?

Daniel Dociu: I started studying architecture and around the age 20 I got a taste of industrial design, which was a new, emerging thing that was finding its way in Eastern Europe. I switched my degree and worked as a product designer for a few years. I left [Romania] in '89 just a few months before the collapse of the iron curtain.

for an article about art you'd think they'd have some new stuff. :(

We already know Daniel Dociu a lot, did that sound like a stalker?...

Quote

Tim Edwards: Is there a responsibility to make sure that the world is beautiful and makes gamers feel happy?
How could you ask that? don't you know, Tim Edwards that these are Artists who love what they do?

Do some research next time around before conducting an interview :p

It's hard to write it phonetically. Listen to him introduce himself in this vid at 1:20

Does anyone even read PC Gamer anymore? They've practically fallen off the radar.

I listen to their podcast, which is quite entertaining.

I do. When CGW/GFW went kersplut (*sniff*) we got PCGamers for the rest of the subscription, and we just decided to subscribe so we could have some PC gaming magazine. They usually have good previews - the feature article on Cataclysm was nice. But they can be really slow getting info otherwise... I laughed my head off when "The Spy" announced the leak of Worgen as the other new Cata race like it was some big secret... two months after it had been discovered by the community as a whole.

If you know a better PC-only gaming mag (console/PC combo mags are at best lopsided and at worst incredibly juvenile in their reviews), please tell me.

On topic: Interesting look inside the art department, but I wish they'd have spent more than like 3 questions actually talking about GW2 and the art, rather than the process.

Lame, ANet should be like Bioware and show updates or progress every friday. Seeing all these screenshots gets kinda lame.

What are you talking about? All the screens in this interveiw were from GW1! And yeah, horrible interview. We've already had a billion interviews about the art of GW2. And they had better questions.

Were they really? It's so hard to judge art from a game in development, one never knows what stage it might be at. But putting GW1 screens seems like a weird thing to do.

Actually that interview was in the UK edition of PC Gamer in March (bought it on a trip). The artwork in there is totally different.

What if they have nothing to report?

"This week we fixed bugs in the engine."

I'd prefer they saved up info until they had enough to give us a solid article.

This.

I'm really enjoying the way they are releasing info (hum, since they unveilied the Elementalist proffesion, that is. The waiting from August till then was a huge torture.)

If Bioware thinks they're further on development/more confident to release a constant base of info, let them. ANet also has its own agenda :p

Yeah. Although I certainly wouldn't mind a few more updates... even if it is just screenies. A new screenshot every coupla days (a la Blizz's Cataclysm screenshot of the day) would do a lot to tide me over, especially if it's got loads of stuff to overanalyze and wildmassguess about (more Krytan writing, possibly a shot of a character from an unreleased profession, even landscape shots without a caption - just something to stir up speculation).

Didn't think about that. Some small tidbits here and there would make me so much happier.

I guess it is their point to answer some and raise some others, to keep speculation going.
