Hello guys, one of the classes I tried out in the latest beta event was the Ranger and among other things I was actually quite surprised by how good their melee capabilities are. A very solid class all-around I feel and I decided to make a short, quick, detailed spotlight for this professionas I have for three others already (with more on the way).

I hope some of you may be able to get a bit of a better idea of what the class is all about.

Hi folks. BWE2 is over now and we're seeing a lot of your videos coming out of it and being posted here. Since nobody wants the entirety of the first Ranger page to be filled up with individual video threads, I'm creating this thread for you to post your short videos and discuss them. If your video doesn't need its own thread, please drop it here.

Here are a few ground rules to follow as you post here:
  • Don't post videos without a description. Just linking or embedding is annoying and unhelpful for people reading the thread. We don't want to watch every video just to learn what they're about!
  • Try and keep the videos coming. While critique and discussion is obviously encouraged, I'd much prefer it if we didn't spend ten pages without a single video in sight. Obviously this rule will be a little laxer in times when we haven't had a BWE for a while.
  • Don't post videos by other active Guru members. If you're posting a video by somebody who is not on Guru, or is no longer active, please give credit for the video and, if possible, a link as to where you got it from.
If you feel like your video really deserves its own thread and will garner a lot of discussion - if you've made a long Ranger PvP guide video, say - then feel free to post it in its own thread. Everything else, however, should go in here. Thanks for reading!

This video is a Structured PvP PuG match on the Forest of Nifhel.

Playing a burst build, role i took in this match was harrasing, slowing down and killing enemy players to give my team more freedom to cap points. Build info can be found in this post in another thread:

More videos coming in next few days. Enjoy.

It seems with all the sigil and rune changes that getting low hp for cost of huge damage is no longer available. However to me that is for the better. I am going to make all my toons as glassy as I can and gain survivablity through some traits and some utility skills and possibly elites. I really enjoyed that longbow ranger vid man, Im a man with much love for the longbow. I see hunters call and rapid fire is rediculous damage when combined. I really look forward to testing it out myself. Sharpening stone kinda seems mediocre at best, I might try a trap in its place. Maybe flame trap which does alot of damage and gives me a combo field, or maybe something else Ive not yet decided. Any thoughts are welcome on replacing that skill.

Yeah sharpning stone was kinda a thing i tested more towards the end of the games i played (i only got to play about 8 hours on the sunday, worked the rest of the weekend) it was just for a little extra damage as i also had the chance to bleed on crit trait and the sharpening stone at 75% health trait it would occasionaly give me a nice bleed stack but yeah its not what i would really want but i cant decide yet.

For a while i used signet of the wild which because of the beastmaster trait gave me a stability buff, very nice counter to the warrior GS/Axe build thats flying around as it means the ranger has 2 stability skills (this and elite) and swiftness up nearly all the time so it makes it hard for them to lock you down to get the combo off.

Muddy Terrain is a skill i didnt get to try but looks nice, could be combined with barrage very well. Also seeing as a key role i had in mind with this build is harrasment and distration to slow down the other team that works well. Also any skill that can be used for offence or defence is always good.

Signet of renewal, this seemed good on paper but didnt seem to work very well in combat, your pet should pull condtions onto itself from nearby allies, which is great as it gives condition removal which is the thing most lacking from this build but everytime i needed it i think my pet must have been to far away or something because it didnt seem to work, either that or its bugging with the beastmaster trait, dont know it seemed to not work well so i removed it but if it worked this would be great. I didnt test extensivly as i only had limited time to play.

There are apparently 3 more utility skills in the works for the ranger so have to see what they are in the future.

Yea instead of sharpening stone I might add muddy terrain or frozen terrain w/e. It adds survivability and allows me to focus even more on offense, I kinda want the 10% damage while flanking trait alot because thats 10% damage and if Im not mistaken 5% crit damage just from those 5 points into the trait that adds 5 crit. thats 15% from just that but I hear strength of spirit is great and adds alot of damage. That and my pet gaining all my boons looks promising as well.

Another new video:

Please ignore the epic failure that was my first fight in this match, i promise it gets better!

Pretty much the same build as the first video apart from im using Signet of Renewal instead of Sharpening Stone. I think a couple of traits might have been diferent to.

Edit 1: Also currently redering a commentary version of my earlier video. Its my first commentary but ill link it on here when its up :)

Edit 2: And here is the new video:

Feedback on the commentary would be great if anyone is willing to take the time :) thanks.

It's a game in beta testing.  Don't get caught up in classes being over/underpowered.

Things change drastically during testing.  Look at Thiefs/Warriors between BWE1 and BWE 2.

I really hope so.. its just a concern that I have with the class balance. I haven't noticed any balancing done during the beta events

Do some looking around.  They nerfed a few abilities such as Backstab and Eviscerate between BWEs.

Then he's doing a great job of highlighting the potential balance issues for ArenaNet to chase up.

The more of these kinds of builds come to light, the more the classes can be tweaked and balanced pre-launch.

I for one applaud the people hunting for exploits.  They're the ones who are going to make the launch great.

No, there's nothing OP about a spirit ranger, the reason they SEEM op is because no one plays a ranger because of the buggy stupid pets, and the only rangers you see mostly are the ones in spvp who get to try out level 80 builds, so no one knows how to deal with a non squishy ranger with lots of support

And if you do see a ranger? 99% of the time hes a longbow noob who will hit multishot then die

... or maybe he was playing against some people who hadn't before, nothing about the build was open, just seemed the people he was playing against were inexperienced.

I think the average level of gamers is low for a die hard gamer and since there is no elo rating system, I can show you 100 builds and then all are OP to you?

I think it's more like 99% he hit multishot and then you die, cuz it does >50k dmg now and is most probably still the best for ranger.

I played a ranger and only played WvWvW. I did find a different build that was strickly melee, and I could take out groups of 3 np. Its not cause I was OP, but I'm sure my enemy were thinking so; It was because they saw a ranger and expected a bowman, not a melee fight.

Shock and AWE tactics.

My build was all around survivability. I seen the red aoe circles, but didn't care, it never hurt me as bad as me slicing them up. Plus me standing there, forced them to kite me out of thier aoe.

Rangers OP? No! Playing smart will always win the day.

EDIT: Fear the player not the class

Things don't change without player input. I'm sort of sick of people saying things like "well the game is just in beta". Yeah that's true, but that doesn't make it above criticism; it needs criticism for the issues to be solved.

That isn't reallydirected at you, you're just the guinea pig for which I express my irritation.

Only got to lvl 27, maybe it was a lvl 80 attack?

Honestly, rangers seem pretty underpowered right now as their pets are worthless and the ranger's damage is gimped to allow for the pet's dps.

I won't claim whether or not something is OP, but i will say this is what BETA is for.

Also worth noting that the people he was facing in the video were awful.  You gotta look at what the player is doing as well as his opponent.  I saw very few weapon swaps, people just auto attacking their melee while he was at range (not using CC to gap close, or literally just standing there swinging a weapon) and not a lot of optimal skill rotation.

Personally I don't think this video is hard evidence of anything.
