Simple Character Creator for Guild Wars 2


Programming Language Program to use for compile the project

The entire project is compatible with Visual Studio 2010 and higher version, Sharpdevelop 4.0 and use Framework.NET 2.0, earlier versions of that programs is not supported and maybe is not compatible.

How do you compile it? I tried your dropbox version and I think it has a lot of promise but I noticed a few things in your compiled version. I couldn't add any utility or heal ability to any class, none of the traits seemed implemented at all as I couldn't spend points on them, which makes the ability to test and give better feedback rather difficult :)
  • Clicking on help ? crashes the program.
  • I'd like to see downed and water weapons listed on the main screen, along with anything special like necros death shroud or any elite that gives you a new bar of skills.

So far it's a nice start. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for tried it.
For compile it take the zip or tar version on github --> https://github.com/m...091/GW2-Builder and compile it using Visual studio 2010 or sharpdevelop.
About the crash when clicking on the ?, i can''t reproduce it...on my side work well and all the secondary skill is not implement yet.
If you want to help, use the repo on github and/or pm for more info about working on it.

just had a look at the app in VB and its really nice, loving the work you have done on it so far, once it is done i am sure it will be great, one feature that would be cool to add is for people to be able to save a load builds,  thanks for the work

P.S how are you going to keep the application updated?, will we need to re-download it every time? or are you going to allow the application to download and update automatically?, if Automatically maybe i could give you some code form an app i worked on for that :)

Thank you :D. For the moment I have not yet implemented any type of updater, even if you pass me the code, I try to add it, even is a "secondary" thing for the moment.

It seems your project is going well. I looked at your code I saw that you dont label the controls to standard practice and many lines of code which can be cleaned up, as in duplication of code. That's just me, I was brought up old school.

Question: Will you do damage adjustments as per trait selection. This is something greatly missing from web site apps I have seen.

Hmm is a nice question, for now i dont now the right formula for the damage or others things related, but yes i can try, after finished the reamins classes (elementalist, mesmer and necromancer) to add the bonus gained by traits at the skills.

About the cleaness of the code, your are right, need a lot of optimization and more "named control" for better modifications, for now i and chaosfw is only persons that work at the project...for the moment. :lol:

I can code in VB 2008 and was thinking of creating a crafters app. But before even starting to code I would need to figure out whats the database structure is going to be. What info do I ready need and what can be calculated in code. Yes the database will be access based.

What do people think, would the community like an app like that.

I don't like databases in app like mine. But if you want to create a crafter app, i advice you to use sqlite, cause is portable and easy to implement in vb, the runtime already exist and not need to be ported or created and work fine really fine if the database is located locally, than access.

For me the community like an app like that, at least i would like it.

Are you continuing to update the compiled version as you make changes? If not then that's not going to help any non programmer give you feedback :)

EDIT: I see you are continuing to update the builds it looks like as the link now says beta release with a date by it. Will download and see if I can get this one to crash too and add what the message is this time.

Ok no crash on Info, which is good :)

Minor Suggestions:
  • Change the class list to the same as the character creator ingame (Elementalist, Warrior, Guardian, Engineer, Ranger, Necro, Thief, Mesmer) It's more familiar that way.
  • Would like to see trident/spear skills for each class and downed state too on main screen, Along with an area to show any elite/transformation skills that gives you a new bar, like Death Shroud, or Norn Forms.
  • Trait reset button for all traits and for each tree would be spiffy when you get to that part.
Bugs:
  • When I mouse over a skill they flicker for a bit. Sometimes they stop and don't flicker, othertimes they keep flickering. (Running windows 7 64 bit if that matters, with other windows open behind the creator.) No window open behind, still flickers, seems to flicker around 3 times or so then stabilize.
  • Can't choose other skills but weapons yet? Not sure this is a bug compared to just not implemented yet.

Is it possible to merge the offline builder and the crafter app?
Or atleast bundle them together?

Also, is it possible to include a advance mathematical section to show the effect of sigils/runes and such?
No idea if it would be too much work or not.

Is a nice advice, but for the moment the only time i have is for the builder, maybe is the future.
About the effect of sigils/runes/traits is in progress, but first other things (finish the remains classes weapons, implement all secondary skills and implement all traits bonus) need to be finished, but nice suggestion anyway.

Just saying ideas that i think of :P Great work though.
I did a procc counter in a spreadsheet but its pretty bad, so ill probably remake it.
(bad architecture for data and i forgot to include that dual sigils dont stack as the internal cd is 1 s if they take effect)

( ( ( (2*(Attacks*CritChance) * SigilProccrate) ) - ( ( (Attacks*CritChance)*(SigilProccrate^2) )/2) ) )=Total procs dual same sigils.

( ( Attacks*CritChance ) * Sigilproccrate ) = Single sigil

( ( 1 - Sigilproccrate ) ^ ( Attacks*Crit ) ) = chance to inflict atleast 1 procc for the factors in in the equation :P (ehm not sure how good this last one is.... -.-* i may be derping on that)

But im sure you already now this! :P

Theres many more people out there with more math skills then me! :P
Just ask around the wiki on threads dedicated to math and im sure you can find some solid math.
Basically as far as ive gathered (not 100% though) it seems at retail people have to figure out damage formulas and power to skill effect factors as they seem to be different for each skill.
My testing with warrior showed a large difference between how power effects skills and thus each skill would need individual testing.
But luckily theres people dedicated to that already!  :)

Two more suggestions if you please. Please add a Race choice at some time so that racial skills can be chosen for any particular build and a save feature so that you can save off builds / share builds with friends.

Just checked out the newest build

The fading in is a creative way to get around the flickering, however I'm having a few problems with it. :(  There are times I'll mouse over a power and it won't fade/flicker in at all. Other times the delay for fading in is excessive. Rarely the tooltip will flicker as its fading in but that isn't really a big deal at all.  No idea what to suggest to you about the slow fade in / flicker issue :/

Oddly I find waiting for the fade in far more irksome then the flickering. Not really sure why but that's just how it strikes me. Perhaps others feel different about that. I'm probably just impatient to see the skill and with the flickering at least I know it's there once it calms down.... not very rational i'm afraid :)

PS: Thanks for changing the order of the classes. I really like what you're doing here.

Ok I don't like to just report anything without any suggestions so I took your layout into photoshop and moved things around a little to see if I could optimize your space and perhaps cure your popup issue. This is what I came up with and I'll post notes below the image. Feel free to ignore this of course as you see fit :). Just trying to help however I can.

  • Moved stuff to compact room
  • Added another split panel where the skill information would appear when moused over. This removes a popup and flickering by having a dedicated window area.
  • Added elite/swapped skill section for things like Norn Forms / Golem Battlesuit / Summoned Lighting Axe etc..
  • Added class skill tab for downed skills and the trident / spear underwater skills. Death shroud can go here too along with ranger pets.
  • The weapon swap button is kind of redundant and could be removed if desired.
  • Added race choice drop down. This would give you the skill choices and cost per race (eg asuran battle golem, human hounds of balthazar, dwayna's blessing etc..)

  • The first weapon still shows the guardian 2h sword because I didn't want to try and dig up all the spear icons :)
  • Same goes for the info window at the bottom.
  • Pet skill window would only show for rangers or anyone who has a pet...hounds of balthazar maybe?
  • Innate prof skills would be for things like Necromancer Death Shroud.
Probably missed stuff from other professions but I've not messed around with them all yet in the bwes.

Hope the new job works out well for you. I'm glad to help with interface suggestions as I'm an artist not a programmer :) Thank you for programming this. Can't wait to see the whole thing done!

Feedback on build 0.0.1.8:
  • Interface looks nice (stuff works)
  • When you get the skill information area working you won't need the popups
  • Race selection works fine.
  • Class skill tab swaps fine
  • F key abilities showed up fine, same with mouse-over.
Bugs:
  • popups still flicker but only for a very short time and they are readable so not really an issue imo. plus you won't need them once the information area is working with all skills.
  • Information area only worked on first attack skill of first weapon? (probably not implemented yet? EDIT: Yes I see it's just the basic setup for now, so not really a bug.)
  • Information area has 2 bits of info over the icon/picture instead of all 4 right next to the icon/picture. Icon/picture probably just needs to be told to left justify and top justify as a guess.
  • Healing skills show up on click of healing skill box but are not selectable. The X works to close the box fine.
  • F keys: Once you click on elementalist and mouse over the Fkey/attunements all other classes will get one of the elementalist attunement icons on the popup (may not be an issue if you remove the popups once the skill info area is finished). All other classes have no image in the popup for the Fkeys before clicking on elementalist.
I am excited :) This is coming along great. Can't wait to see all the weapon skills for each class in there and then of course the rest!

Is there a way to help with data entry or are you somehow pulling skill information and icons from the gw2 dat file?

All the data & icons is taken from official wiki and various builder on the web, cause not have installed yet on this pc (while i am writing).
Now i relocate the skill info on to another file, just for edit it easy.

Update: file created, on github look for "SkillInfo.vb" and edit this without any problems or send me an email just for share the dropbox folder of the project.

Update 1: version 0.0.1.9 released, look at changelog for changes.

the vb file looks a little confusing. I'll see if I can figure out what needs to go where and send you / pm you a text file of skill additions if I can to make your job easier. Can't promise anything though :)

Downloading new update now...

Feedback:
  • All Necro main hand weapon skills show up fine
  • Most Elementalist weapon skills show up fine
  • All Mesmer weapon skills show up fine
  • All skills show up very fast and clean
  • Mouse over for weapon skills that have stats shows up fast in the skill info area
  • Fkey popup names work fine and fast
Bugs:
  • Necromancer secondary weapon choices don't show once weapon is chosen in dropdown box.
  • Necromancer scepter has wrong skill icon for secondary weapon set for the first attack.
  • Elementalist attunement clicking doesn't swap the skills until you change the weapon selected, then the skills change to the new attunement.
  • Elementalist secondary weapon set scepter seems to be acting odd. it doesn't swap back to dagger correctly and if you choose an attunement then it changes the primary weapon too, when you change the secondary scepter.
  • Elementalist dagger for secondary weapon isn't showing skills now and then (main hand)
  • Information area has 2 bits of info over the icon/picture instead of all 4 right next to the icon/picture. Icon/picture probably just needs to be told to left justify and top justify as a guess. This may not matter as some skills have a long list of effects that my wrap oddly if changed.
  • Healing skills show up on click of healing skill box but are not selectable. The X works to close the box fine.

I don't know enough about programming and stuff to be of help, but I'll try crashing the beta or something and see if I can find anything that hasn't been mentioned lol

Can you send me a screenshot, cause i don't have this problem, have tried 3 computers with different windows.
