The difference between spending ~$60-$150 on a game and spending that money on going to the movies, eating out, drinking, etc. is the social investment. I know when I splurge on a night out with friends or family, I'm building/maintaining relationships and memories that could last the rest of my life. On the other hand, spending that same amount of money on a videogame only allows me to share social experiences with mostly online friends I'll never see or need anything from outside the game (exception would be for people who have a lot of real life friends that play GW2).

So although GW2 may be a better investment in terms of fun per dollar, it has less potential for any long-term return. That said, the payment model is very nice in that you don't have to continually give up your nights out in order to continue to play something you enjoy.

Voted it was already worth my money. Unless they completely change the game to a crappy looking sub-based + pay-to-win cash shop grinding MMO I'll be satisfied. And so far during the beta's it's exactly what I'm looking for. I will buy the expansions and maybe I'll buy the extra character slots, just to get them early on. I'm expecting some form of birthday presents again and wouldn't like missing a few again just because I didn't create a character yet. Played GW1 pretty much from the start and deleted a few characters during the first year of playing, dumbest thing I've ever done :P

As long as I get a few months of entertainment out of it, it's easily worth the cost - and given the taste I've had in the beta weekends, I fully expect it to provide that and more.

I will most likely buy expansions. I haven't decided on gems, though. I don't mind dropping a little real money here or there since there's no sub fee, but I'm not sure anything in the gem shop will be enough to get me to spend money on it. Bank slots are probably the most likely thing I'll buy from the current list.

I've already had more play time out of GW2 than a few games I've purchased/rented over the years. I never expect more than the first month worth of game time from any of these games, though I try to stick it out for at least 90 unless the game or the people playing it are insufferable. So I guess I consider the first month or so worth the money on average.

Continued replayability for me with MMOs has more to do with the community than anything else and that is hard to put a price on. If the community sucks then the game comes to suck soon enough. MMOs are simple games for the most part and the relationships forged with people while playing them will keep the game experience fun longer than the mechanics or gimmicks ever will for me.

Beyond that, there are people I met nearly 20 years ago in text based games, or within the last 14 or so playing MMOs, that I still have relationships with today. There are also friends and relatives of mine that have moved or have responsibilities in their lives that I can't just go spend an evening or a weekend with any more like we used to, but we can pick a game to goof off in for a while when we both have time even when we're several states apart from one another. If the relationship is real it transcends the game. It also makes the game experience better at the same time. And $60 is pretty cheap in that regard.

EDIT cus i typ gud

for me personally, as long as I get more than 1 hour of fun for each dollar spent, then I've got my money's worth. I've had more than 80 hours of fun over 3 BWEs, so I feel that I've got my money's worth.

Once launch comes along, how much I spend in the cash shop really depends on whether or not any of the items interest me. But I know I will at least buy character slots.

Even if I just get a month of two out of it at a given time.  Breaks happen with work and things.  I will feel I get my money out of it pretty quickly.  Even more so with the freedom to pick it back up at any time.

I will probably keep my extra purchases down to expansions, whatever they may be.  With the gem/gold trading system I'd figured I'd try that for a while and see how it goes.  Was never anything in GW1 gem store that I felt I had to get, and from what they have already shown, not much difference here either.
