I have bought the DDE myself, I guess that pretty much answers your question. I never buy things that I consider to have less value than the asking price.

This is the answer to the question.
It doesn't matter if the price does not fit the product (and neither the DE or the CE do, they are completely over-priced), it's how one FEELS about it.

You might be in for a rude awakening there. The DDE contains a "Golem Banker". Mystic chests are opened by a Personal Butler Golem. I would not expect them to be identical.

and the golem banker only lasts 5 days once you start it up, so even if it did open mystic chests it aint gonna be around long. Can you say disgusting cash shop plug?

Thanks to the strange and utterly ridiculous tax price on video games in Australia, the digital deluxe edition is actually either cheaper or identical in price to a physical copy of the standard edition. Thus, it's a win/win situation for me since I pay the same price, but I get extra loot, get the head start, and don't have to run to the store.

Okay. So since i have faith in all of you people, I will not ask if you know what the Digital Deluxe Version of Gw2 is. Because I gather that half of you have bought it already.
Anyway. I was thinking; comparing prices; and researching the game, when I started thinking of the benefits you receive for buying the DD version

So, the benefits of the DD version are these..

Summon Mistfire Wolf Elite Skill* (Skill Summon)

Miniature Rytlock* (Mini pet)

Golem Banker* (5 days)

Chalice of Glory* (1 use)

Tome of Influence* (1 use)

As far as I know, there are still some unresolved questions:

Can the mini Rytlock be sold in the store?  If so, for me the value of the DD is much less.

I would also like to see a skill animation of the Summon Wolf.

(of course, I already bought the CE, so this is a moot point for me, but others would probably like to know).

Given that apparently you will be able to obtain the item through the store, the collectible value of the DE is null. It's best to keep the $20 to spend at the store at will.

I originally bought the deluxe and after the first beta weekend got a refund and bought the standard one. The extra fluff is useless junk in all honestly. I thought it would be wiser to spend that extra money in the gem store on a couple character slots!

my take:

no one knows what the elite looks like or what it will do. the mini-pet might be cool. all in all the DDE might wind up having littel to no significance....but it's only 20 *in dollars. 10 years from now you aren't gonna look back and say "man i really regret spending that $20 on the DDE on GW2. man what i could do with that $20 now!!" so screw it, i bought it.

any source for this?

The confirmation is that you can upgrade from a regular version to the Digital Deluxe.  There has been no confirmation that all of these items would be sold individually in the store.  (which would ruin the whole point of the DD.  why would Anet do that?)

On the other hand, we don't know how long the DD will be available.  That's another question.

The DDE has only two valuable things in it ... the miniature and good feeling of helping Anet ... and for me I would have to pay almost a double price for the DDE ... I might consider it for $20 but def not for $40 (*yay* for euro conversion, right?)

I don't regret spending the extra $20, but offering a character slot or something like that instead of the cash shop sampler we're getting would have made me a lot happier.  I collect minis and think the skill will probably be pretty cool so I don't feel like it was a waste of money.

I have no problem with them offering the upgrade through the cash shop later, but the minipet and skill are the only "special" items that come with the DD edition.  The rest is stuff you can already buy from the cash shop.  Part of me hopes the minipet is soulbound.

There's one thing the DD has that isn't one of the listed goodies: convenience.

Prepurchasing from a store usually means two trips. One to prepurchase and another to pick up the box. For some people, this is either time consuming and/or costs money, or is out of the question altogether. In my case, bus fare to and from the store each time would be $5 and ~1 hour round trip, for a total of $10 and 2 hours either on the bus or waiting for the bus. For a mere $10 more I can save myself the time (and possibly avoid dealing with drunk/drugged up people) and get some bonus items.

And for those who live far away from a brick-and-mortar store or in a city with poor public transit, it can be even worse and basically both trips end up being an all-day trip. Release day shipping also tends to cost money, assuming a delivery can even be made ;)

While I'm rather indifferent to the Chalice and Tome and will probably sit on my Golem for a while before using it, between the elite, Rytlock mini and sheer convenience of the DD, I do think it is worth the extra $20 in my case.

Yeah... Leaves me wondering how they're going to do this head start thing. I'm guessing they'll let you play until release date and then they'll make you put in an actual game box key? Seems like a pain.

Depends on where you live and if you are buying a Physical or Digital Version.   BTW, there are Standard Digital versions available from ArenaNet, you don't have to buy the Digital Deluxe to get a digital version of the game!

You will not need a second code for Digital versions.

Physical editions (including the CE), will require people to enter the physical code from the retail box.  You have 5 days to do this from launch to continue playing without interruption.

The one exception is Standard Physical Edition in Europe, whose Beta code is the same as the retail code, and they will NOT need another code.  "This is the only serial code customers will receive and will grant access to the Beta Weekend Events, three-day Headstart Access, the Hero's Band digital item, and full access to the final live game. Customers will not need to return to the retailer to receive another serial code."

Makes me wonder if the Elite skill is going to be cool or is going to be meh.  They are doing the smart thing if you think about it. Dont reveal the Elite skill till after release so people cant refund if they dont like it since the game is live. Allowing people to upgrade from standard to DDE because the elite skill is awesome and the wow factor entices people to upgrade. win/win

Isn't the upgrade obtained through the store? That's what I got from it. Either way, if you can upgrade after launch, DDE is pointless. It appears that it is supposed to be a little token aside of the hero band to show we were present at launch and paid a little extra. If everyone can obtain the same stuff after, it's sorta worthless.

There are actually these types of game code:
- Preorder code - not a real code, just gives 1 day headstart and 5 days grace period
- Retail code - real code (with SE, DDE, CE variation) used to play full game at game release
- Pre purchase code - code thats let you play BW, gives 3 days headstart and automatically turns into corresponding retail code at official game release

- Beta code - allows you to play a corresponding beta event

According to the wiki the Chalice of Glory gives you a set amount of glory, it should have no relation to the sucky one obtained through chests.

The elite skill obtained through the deluxe edition won't be as powerful as the other elite skills. There's a video on youtube where a journalist asked this question because he was concerned about people having an advantage  just because they choose to pay extra

But what I want to know is if you guys think it's worth it.

I don't regard anything the DDE has to offer over the normal edition as additional value. I'm sorry, but it's pretty clear that the DDE is a way for ANet to have fans pay a little extra to show their appreciation for the game. I'm very happy that there's nothing permanent and in your face like the guild wars prophecies CE had. Minipets aren't tradeable and the elite skill is most likely going to be less powerful than your profession specific ones. All of those are visually very discreet, and for a good reason.
I bought the DDE to give ANet an extra "tip", so to speak, not because I wanted to obtain prestige to have something I could rub peoples nose in.

The $20 extra for the digi-lux version isnt for those who want to spend money on "digital fluff". Remeber all those people who are hellbent on not spending money in the cash shop? Well apparently none of these people will have bought the digital deluxe version, because all you're getting is extra fluff. lol.

I bought all CE's for one of my GW1 accounts and got the CE of GW2 as well. Nothing overwhelming in the CE or the DDE, but I simply wanted to demonstrate my appreciation to ANet for 7 years of fun playing GW1, and help them develop great expansions for GW2.

I got the standard edition but will use the money I saved to either buy gems or a second copy of the game. I can use the gems to speculate in the gem <=> gold trade, or buy items from the gem store outright. I can use the extra account  for fun or to entice a friend who is uncommitted into playing. I figure either of those would be a more efficient use of my money.

Oh well, I don't mind supporting developers I like, because there's not many.  The golem banker will be handy during the 3 day head start too I guess.

I recommend that you don't use it during the 3 day headstart; unless you play 72 hours straight.
Maybe save it for when your bank, and inventory become full, that's when it would be better to use it. :)

I wanted some stuff that separated me from the rest. Something that i can show off in six years so people can see that i was there from the start.

Therefore, i got the Digital Deluxe edition, as the physical items in the Collectors Edition have no value to me.

Good idea, but even with the standard edition that you prepurchase, you receive a hero's band that also shows you came at the start.
But good job for supporting the developers. :) I would love the Collectors edition, mainly because of the books and art. It really appeals to me; I love GW2 art.

But I only got the standard edition.

Considering that they won't charge me monthly fees for playing this game, I thought that it wouldn't hurt to give them a few more bucks for their product that I believe in. If all the races could use the elite, it would be better.

I didn't buy the DD version. Mainly because I can't justify that extra $20 for a mini pet and an elite skill I likely won't use anyway. I am one who isn't going to spend money for items in the cash shop either :P. Although I probably will buy expansions online.

I agree completely. But on the other hand, I might eventually invest in some bank tabs.
