Hey everyone! Please see the new thread here:
http://www.guildwars...server-removal/

New forum for Aussie Players has been set up. GW2 Dedicated. I would highly suggest taking a look, though please keep in mind it is in it's infancy. I'll be making a post there, find me under the same name as here on guru.

I completely agree with you that Sea of Sorrows is looking to be a launch day Guild split for many. My mates and I have yet to decide, it might be Tarnished Coast. We were looking at Sorrows Furnace but that looks like its going to be full aswell.

The guesting system helps but launch will be crazy enough so picking a decent homeworld would be nice.

Edit: Yak's bend might be another good one.

I am In sea of sorrows and hope to stay there.

I know you said you didn't want to hear it, but.....

Is the character wipe also going to mean that the home servers per account will also be wiped?

He's asking for alternatives, and I'm pretty sure it will be wiped.

I know many (including myself) who have gone to Astralarium. Last time I checked there was plenty of space for newcomers (low-med population). It also has one of the better names of the selection as well as the word being semiotically similar to Australia. So in that respect it was a winner for the people i play with.

Our guild is still yet to decide on a home server because Sea Of Sorrows is full all the time

But I do like the sound of Astralarium being the secondary home for Oceanic guilds!!!

My Guild which is basically a group of 10 of my mates from RL all made the decision to switch after SOS and Darkhaven were too full. I've also seen several other players in other topics mention they chose Astralarium also.

I would think server choice will be wiped also. But yes it will fill up quickly. At this stage not sure - leaving a friend to decide as he actually knows people who will be playing gw2 whilst I don't. A medium server would get some good wvwvw balance buffs in the initially un-evenly matched fights. Could get good xp and karma from that.

If Astralarium becomes more popular with the Oceanic crowd, I will probably roll there. I wanted to join one of the unofficial Oceanic servers but I had reservations about Sea of Sorrows and Darkhaven given how populated they have become - and it isn't even release yet.

None of my friends who would be interested in this game are willing to leave WoW (apparently my friends are crazy people) and I haven't kept in touch with my old GW1 guildmates - though they were all European anyway, and I have no desire to have a Euro server as a homeworld. Unless I can convince some people that WoW sucks in comparison to GW2 I'll be on my own at launch, so I can pretty much pick anywhere I want to at the moment.

I'm from Canada and I also find that sever are still low in #'s.
There should be American, Eropean and the 3rd group Asian/Australian.
I hope this gets rectified as sales go up, good luck.

I'm not in any guild, but I'd like to join a server that isn't overloaded (SoS & Darkhaven), but still has plenty of oceanic players.

Will keep an eye on this thread to see what alternative looks best.

I think I am in Basalt Grotto. I never go to designated "oceanic"  servers unless  its actually Oceanic based. I don't see the point in them to be perfectly honest. You always find other Oceanic players no matter what server your on.

But thats just my opinion.

my friends choose divinity's coast, but seeing how that is a new server(therefore a bit underpopulated), i m happy to go to astralarium.
We should do a poll!

My guild from GW1 chose Sea of Sorrows but I chose not to follow suit considering how utterly full its going to end up/already is.
I can't however remember what I chose during the BWE (it was one of the nice unpopulated new servers I think though) . One of my biggest gripes is that the servers with the best/most nostalgic names belong to France and the rest of Europe... (I'm assuming that US servers are going to be faster for those of us in Oceania.

I'm on Yak's Bend at the moment with my guild but I am concerned about how popular it has been during the BWE events. It's currently our server of choice for release but I might look into a server with a smaller population during BWE3. I mostly want to get out of Yak's Bend because I have a feeling we will be in and out of overflow for the first few weeks.

There are already multiple threads on this.  Can also see the discussion on whingepool.

There are also a number of servers that have Aussie guilds.  Isle of Janthir and Ember Isle seem to have the most after the main 2.

Just so you are informed about Tarnished Coast, it's been chosen as NA's RP Server, so you might run into a population problem there as well.

Home servers will be wiped, this was confirmed by Areanet themselves, but I am to lazy to go look for the post :/

Also I will be going to Sea of Sorrows, I enjoy playing on high populated servers with the majority of people living in Australia, and since I play long hours, when night time hits it will be peaceful and I can go walk abouts doing my own thing. ;)

Edit: I think darkhaven might become the second choice for oceanic servers !

They do nothing at all, The only factor is the oceanic community sticking together somewhat to allow for an active player base during our play times. There are no bonuses depending on which server you choose or anything like that, All that changes depending on server is the base of players you are able to socialise and play World vs World with.

Most aussies are going for the Sea of Sorrows server just because thats what was chosen by the oceanic community just before Beta - The issue is that server is well over capacity, resulting in long queues during american peak hours.

The only solution to that issue is selecting a secondary server, Which is pretty much what this thread is here to achieve.

Again - No bonuses depending on which server, Only differences are the players you get to play with.

Hope thats cleared it up for you!

There are no different server rules, like RP, PvP or PvE, etc. But each you represent your World (server) when you play in WvW, and you benefit from the achievements of your World's success in WvW.

sPvP is across the whole NA or EU. You can guest of any server for PvE, but we haven't seen how that works yet. So the impact is mostly WvW, and guilds.

This issue is also semi-important in WvW because having an active aussie timezone playerbase can be beneficial to the World as the keeps and stuff can be defended or attacked during aussie times. Basically, the World is more likely to have a 24hr round the clock crew in WvW.

As already mentioned, Tarnished Coast has already been chosen to be the North American RP server. Even so, during BWE #2 it was full as well, so either way it will give you the same problem as Sea of Sorrows. While we have yet to decide officially if we will stay on TC, the opinion seems to heavily lean in the favor of staying there. Just waiting on an official server lit at this point.

I don't think you really need a second oceanic server for the same reason that the RP community doesn't need a second RP server. The population won't be so impossible to work with later on, after all. No use in spreading yourselves out.
