Is it possible that they may merge servers if any of the servers end up being underpopulated? Also, will there be free server transfers shortly after launch until things have settled down?

No idea if they'll merge at this time.

However, there's already options available via the gem store for players to transfer their home server.  Note that you can guest on other servers for free.  Home server is really only an issue for region and WvW.

Also, I think it would be a good idea to actually be thinking of at least a 3rd "named" Oceanic server.  I think you'll find there will be more than enough to sustain 3 servers with ease.

GW2 might be the first game where the NA crowd might gravitate towards the Worlds with a strong Oceanic timezone playerbase because of the benefits of having a 24hr WvW community going.

Hopefully the Oceanic playerbase spreads out in about 2-3 servers.

I hope you guys spread out at least a little bit cuz I love playing with Kiwis late at nite.  ♥  Targeting two of the most popularly named servers in Sea of Sorrows and Darkhaven might not serve your community so well in the end when it comes to queues for WvW but you'll always know where to go guesting for PvE action in your primetime at least.  I think Astralarium sounds like a neato world to shape as a low pop WvW focused home for Kiwis and Kiwi lovers alike.

Only problem with that are these 2 servers are going to be the first to fill up.  That's if the BWEs are any indication to go on.

So you're left with 2 options:

• Join an over populated server, which brings with it a host of problems ie. Boring unbalanced WvW, constantly playing on overflows, guilds/friends splitting because server is full, etc...
  
• Join a low-medium pop server, which doesn't suffer the above issues.

there's some discussion about whether or not it's going to be overpopulated and reddit might go to another one...plus that was only the karma server, there's more than one i think (port sledge too) but there's over 30k members of the guildwars2 subreddit so likely there will be several reddit servers.

Sea of Sorrows was definitely the first choice for Oceanic players, at least here on Guru, and Darkhaven was quickly picked as a second due to Whirlpool. In a couple of threads since, Astralarium has been talked about as another possible Oceanic hangout, since both Sea of Sorrows and Darkhaven are now pretty much full.

I also would favour a poll, then we can select the three most popular out of a given list.

I like the idea of Astralarium, only worry is that it might be underpopulated perhaps? But the issue of Sea of Sorrows is that it will definitely be full. It was full the majority of the time during the BWE's and I would assume the same upon release. Darkhaven is the same, really. And apparently Darkhaven is the reddit server, best not to go there!

So if anyone could incorporate a poll with options such as (suggestion only ):
-Astralarium
-Isle of Janthir
-Eternal Grove
-Tarnished Coast
-Yak's Bend
-Ember Isle

Can add extras. Shouldn't include SoS or Darkhaven as options as in the long run - they really aren't. They're going to be far too full for us.

PS. Damn you ArenaNet, if you made just a couple official we wouldn't have this problem.

Keep in mind that SoS is probably full for the same reason that Tarnished Coast (the RP server) is: More people than not DON'T keep up where which community is rolling. So the majority of people aren't going to go by a handy dandy list that says "Okay this is the Guru server, this is the Reddit server, this is the Oceanic server, and this is the RP server! I'm going to go here then!" It's more like "This server sounds like a good name. I'm going here."

Most people don't realize where they are rolling. That's not to say rolling on these servers with communities makes no difference. We have strong enough presences to establish on our community.

Well I don't think Tarnish Coast is an option as I'm pretty sure that's the unofficial RP server.

I think anyone can edit it (like a wiki). Although it's been like that for a very long time.

I'm def switching from Sorrows Furnace.  Looks to be another heavily populated server.
