I just picked up my new desktop recently, yesterday after I transferred all the stuff from my old desktop, I decided to check opening GW2.

After I opened it, nothing was being downloaded, and not long after I was greeted with an error message:
"Download failed! Please check your internet connection and try again."

I totally don't understand why that happened...

I tried:
- running it in Administrator mode
- checking if my firewall blocks it
- putting the .exe in various places (in Program Files, other folder, or just on desktop)
- checking my internet connection (of course, it was perfectly fine)
- redownloaded the client from my account page, but still the same thing once I tried to open it...

It's a new pc, the only major difference is that my new one is Win7 while my old one is Vista (both 64 bits), I literally didn't touch any setting except installing AVG anti-virus 2012 (also it doesn't seem like AVG's blocking it in any way either).

Still two weeks to go until BWE3, I'd really really wish to fix this issue before then...>.<

still the best thing is to:
-turn off windows firewall
-turn off antivirus and firewall

did u transfer the gw2.exe over to the new desktop or did you re-dl one?

I guess I'll try those two methods tomorrow morning, was kinda tired that I forgot.

And yes I transferred the whole GW2 folder from my external hard drive to new desktop, I didn't try opening it while it was still in the drive; after the failure, I then downloaded a new GW2setup.exe and gotten the same result.

If you still have problems, try running it as administrator.

I tried putting a shortcut to the EXE in my Startup programs, and I received that message every time on startup.  I removed that shortcut and have not seen that error since.

This anecdote probably will not help, but I am sharing it just in case.

If using AVG, disable it entirely. It completely blocked the download for me and a friend.

Yes indeed, AVG was causing problems for quite a few people back when the client was first being downloaded prior to the first BWE; it may be the culprit here as well.

Aha! it was indeed AVG that blocks it - specifically its Firewall setting.
(I disabled it all but with the Firewall still active, download failed; once I tweaked around the Firewall's setting for a bit, then it was ok again)

Thanks guy~ :)
