Add to that the awesomeness of the bio-luminescence, and why play a human?  That thief with the dark clothes and glowing arms is awesome.

Only reason why my main will be a human thief it to continue the legacy of my assassin from Guild Wars 1 :)

But yes I must agree with you when it comes to the Sylvari anatomy. Their body structure is really human-esque, I like how vines/roots/bark etc are bound together in  the limbs and spine. GJ ArenaNet.

I love the glow the Sylvari's have, very unique looking race. Nice job Anet!

Yeah it's marvellous. I remember looking at a screenshot of Caithe not long ago and noticed she glows....I sort of wondered if she was the only one that would glow, but now I know she won't be!

I have visions of a light pink Sylvari with a pinkish glow lol. I can't wait to try it out. They look amazing and the armour looks amazing.

Friggin' amazing! Only issue is that I couldn't see long hairstyle for neither genders. Or maybe there was, but due to the quality of the vid I couldn't spot 'em.

I'm sure many have noticed, but they actually have entirely different animation/idle poses from the human ones!

What about the more bark type winter skins?

In the body shape selection screen the top row and bottom row are the same shapes, but the top row is brighter and lusher looking, while the bottom row looks more bark-like. It's not super bark-y, but there is an interesting difference in the two.

I'm going to be stuck in character creation for so long. Trying to decide between the body shapes and the leaf vs. bark look, the skin color, the bio-luminescence color, the markings and those colors, the hair and hair color, the eyes...so many potentially different color combos and some are so vibrant! I wonder if I can go rainbow....

Hmm, not a lot of "hair" or face choices to be honest, but the variety of "skin" colors and markings will hopefully make up for that...

(P.S. Why don't females get a mushroom hairstyle!?)

Yes!

Since the announcement of the Sylvari concept, and their association with The Pale Tree, my desire to know more about them intensified.  I was certain that at least one of my characters would be a Sylvari.

With a curious awe, their first appearances were noted.

Sylvari were presented as new plant creatures, starting their lives in seed pods, sentient beings, their minds filling with wonder as their self-awareness increased.  And for each, a link, a bond, to the Pale Tree and, to The Dream.  For some of us, It was all very alluring, and we were hooked from the onset,

However, apparently not all was as it should have been...

With anxious anticipation, Sylvari watchers had to endure the dark days of the unknown...Our beloved Sylvari were being redesigned!

Although not everyone likes change, many would agree that the Sylvari were greatly improved.  The compelling story behind Sylvari redesign only enhances their mystique.

The concept of the Sylvari, and their redesign, indicates that this gamer will be spending considerably much more time in Character Creation mode.

For the Sylvari concept, and subsequent redesign, I offer my thanks and appreciation to the ArenaNet design team.  Well Done!  [But, we already knew that, didn't we.]

Hi everyone,

Kristen Perry wanted to clarify a few points:

Quote

The profession armors shown in character creation are not any specific set, nor are they strictly sylvari armors. The point of the profession examples are to show off cool combinations the player can coordinate. They are not necessarily cultural designs, just demonstrating possibilities for customization. :}

Secondly, this is a work in progress for sylvari customization presentation. It is not final for release, and things may and will change. For example, characters aren't aligned in their zoom, the glow lighting should only appear at night and is currently overblown. We're still tweaking the palettes and lighting. :}

Hope that provides additional context to some of the concerns we saw. :-)

a slightly off topic question Regina (maybe you are still here and can actually help me out ^^) :

Early in the game the human racial question of noble, common or street rat gave you different starter armor. What happened to that? Is it scratched altogether so everyone gets the same armor? Or will this concept be back at launch? I felt it was a great concept to get more "in touch" with the character's story.

Awesome info, looking forward to all of these. Hopefully we get to still preview the glow lighting in the CC before the day-night rules start to apply for them. They look gorgeous! I haven't seen Caithe's glow patterns though ...every other hero seems to be possible to be created in the CC, but her....but maybe I just didn't pay enough attention... then again two faces weren't clicked (one of which was the default) and maybe one of them is her face?

Holy ****. I want to stay human since I'm a human too and they are the most neutral looking class... but Slyvaris have so much texture and color variation. It's like comparing a commonplace button down shirt with one made while on acid.

The Sylvari are absolutely stunning. Kristen Perry and Arenanet did an amazing job. I don't think we can consider them green elves anymore. It's going to be hard for me to choose my race now. Charr or Sylvari....

So originally my warrior was likely to be a female norn, because I love the norn and the heavy armor looks great on them.  But now I'm so tempted to make a mushroomhead that wields a katana/naginata, because the head looks so much like a conical hat.

I've been wondering this too. I really liked the differing outfits with each of the different personal story options. :D
Thanks for the info, Regina and Kristen! :)

Plus side:
I love the detail of their bodies. The bio-luminescence is amazing. And I like the nice variety of bodies they have.

Minus side:
There is an extreme lack of faces and hairdos. No long hair styles for either gender (except for that one pony tail for the girls). There are only very few hair styles I like. We need more variety in these two areas, but I'm afraid this is all we're getting. :(

I'm still greatly looking forwrd to making a sylvari in the beta though. Oh and an asura too. :)

Hrmm.. what professions for Sylvari should I choose?

I'm thinking Guardian, Thief, and Mesmer. I will say I think Sylvari is one of the better done races as of right now.

More than 4 body type options? This is insane!

ANet, please, please, please don't overdo the toning down of the bio-luminescence.  Only at night is cool, but it looks amazing in the video.

I get making it more subtle, but please err on the side of "ooooh" rather than "meh". :(

Indeed.  Still hoping we haven't seen all that will be available at release.

Also still wish they'd gone with a slider system, but I guess that's their decision to make, and they made it.

Yeah, I actually like the way it looks. I'm afraid they might "nerf" it too much. Please don't! It's really an amazing feature for the sylvari.

That glowing effect (is that their 'sap' showing through their skin?) looks amazing. They're a perfect mix of 'alien' and 'beautiful', imo.
