I'm curious to see how many people will be running guild wars 2 over steam as to take advantage of the steam overlay and the other features it offers. Is anyone going to be running GW2 over steam in the next beta or has done so in the previous betas? Did you run in to any snags?

I have ran it with steam overlay and have had no problems with it...so far lol

I've run it through steam in all the BWE's so far. No issues at all so far.

... What use is the steam overlay? looking at what games your friends are playing? Steam chat? I don't really see any reason to have it active with your MMO... also I hate steam so I am fairly biased.

haven't run it though the overlay doubt I ever will

the overlay annoys me more than i use it even when i am playing steam games

Edit: And also to promote Guild Wars 2 to my friends. When I spent a lot of time playing GW1 through steam to get my HoM done, quite a few friends asked me whether or not the game was still good considering how old it was. And now a few of them have GW1 and plans on buying GW2, though not pre-purchase, they will wait until launch rush dies down a bit.

The steam overlay is annoying.  But, GW2 doesn't allow for alliance chat, so if people want to be able to talk with allies they are forced to use annoying 3rd party programs.  It sucks.  I hope A-Net will fix it.

It's cool 'n' all that some people above me hate steam and must share it with the world, it seems to be the next big thing, right after hating WoW. That wasn't the question asked tho, so you don't need to share it with us.

Yes I tried it both BWE1 and 2 and it worked fine.

Steam overlay is just another form of facebook or the old MSN. It's great for watching what games people are playing and if you should join them, without having to ask them.

I can see Steam overlay being worthless if you don't have many friends to game with.

mhh I don't really need that - most of the people I am playing with are friends or people I know in reallife too XD
we're speaking over the games which we ar eplaying, and when something new comes out, we are talking about it too ~

Love Steam and all but I only like to use it when I have to. Kind of annoying if you have multiple games on multiple accounts. Plus it does seem crash a lot while stuff is loading but that's fine as long as it doesn't crash the game.

I was about to ask this lol, good to know it works, i find steam really useful for quick chat outside of the game and voice chat.

Got a few questions about this

Does this work when the game is in full screen mode and not just a maximised window
How do you stop kicked people from logging on and screwing things up? (passwords won't help, as someone is bound to tell them)
What privacy options do you have?
What if your guildies and alliance friends don't want to, or can't use steam for some reason?

Can anyone think of another AAA MMO that needs a third party, external overlay program just so you can chat with everyone you wish to?

If the desire to access Steam chat, browsers, and other programs is so great, why don't you just run the game in windowed? Simple and easy. I have no hatred for Steam, but the overlay isn't useful at all to me.

I like steam. It hasn't failed me yet. I will run through steam for easy access to chat and browser.

Weird.  The first thing I did when downloading my first game from Steam was look for a way to disable that overlay.  Reading some of the other responses, it must be because I don't have many friends who play games.

Can't see how anyone wouldn't like Steam, like damn, buy one game for <$5 and you have sweet in-game cross-game chat + in-game browser + other social stuff.

Especially useful for talking about things not allowed in game lol

I use steam overlay too, and i'm almost sure i'll keep using during launch, mostly to speak with friends and/or browse.

I've been running it with the Steam overlay ever since BWE 1, and have never had a single problem with the overlay itself, alt-tabbing or any Steam features. Its been perfect and seamless for me. I've even been posting my GW2 screenshots on my Steam account.
