In GW1 I always enjoyed the choice of being able to make your human whatever ethnicity you wanted to. (ie you could make a black person in Tyria, an Asian in Elona, or a white person in Cantha.) You weren't restricted by the culture of the continent. But, with GW2 there is a new race of (obvious) humanoids. Now I understand that the Norn are supposed to represent a Scandinavian culture. But still, there should be the choice of race. It would be quite discriminatory if the Norn were only allowed to be Aryan. Is there any word from Anet on if Norn will be allowed to go beyond their Scandinavian qualities via skin color and other physical features?

Well, just because they're humanoid doesn't mean they're human, if there are no black norn, there can't be any black norn, biologically speaking, unless of course one gets charred to near death. Also, I thoughtt hey were norse/viking based, anyways I'd be a little confused to see an asian(canthan) norn. Though, I would be a little surprised if we weren't able to create a black norn, but we'll have to wait and see.

We can only hope the character creation is much better than that of Guild Wars. I hated the fact I felt like a clone. As for character creation in Guild Wars 2, not enough info is out but we have to keep in mind, in my opinion over customization is ridiculous. Case in point, what I have seen in Aion is crazy: little people with giant heads, etc. A black Norn would probably be implemented for diverse reasons.

They haven't said anything yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they allow it.

If I want them to? no... actually I don't...

Do people want to see black dwarfs in gw as well? For me that is the same thing, maybe not to others, but for me it is.

Sure, people get a tan when it's sunny outside, but you don't get enough to look like an elonian human. And I don't think, even if they stay in the desert for several generations (250 years), that they'll dramatically change their skin colour.

And no one bring up the "but what if they f'ed a elonian human" argument, because there is no physical proof of that.

Tan - yes. Elonian skin colour - no

Black norn are unlikley just going off the climate they live in but only white norn would suck for character creation. It's more reasonable to expect some Inuit or Tibetan skin tones. Clearly not white but not completely out of place in a cold region.

I think you'll be able to choose your own skin colour, but each race might have limitations.

For example, Sylvari could have a green skin colour, but other races aren't allowed to have a green skin colour.

Of course that is just speculation, but if it's true I think it will be possible to make a Norn with a tan, but maybe not black because of the climate they live in etc.

I'm sure there will be black norn option. It makes no sense to me, as at best a norn would have had to gone to Elona and breed with a human, so they'd be half-norns really... but Anet will probably put it in for the sake of a multi-racial playerbase.

A norn with a darker skin there. So, there might just be norn with darker skin. Or, the darker skin can be illussionated with numerous tattoes (and I suspect the players can choose them on their norn, as we've seen a number of norn with tattoes).

And for the people saying how they don't have skin 'cause of the climate norn live:

You clearly have not been on a mountain, since of the heights (no matter the cold), the sun burns a lot, and if you're not careful, you can get darker skin (so it's important to protect your head).

That doesn't even look like a tan, more like... dust between the tattoos? :p

But it certainly is darker if you compare the male norn skin to the female norn skin.

True, but they are born 'white'. If they'd go to mountain tops like you say they'd get a tan, but they still wouldn't be 'black'.
Not that I care about this kind of stuff though, I'd be perfectly fine with being able to make a black norn. Doesn't really matter to me whether it makes 'sense' or not.

it is a race. there are no pre-defined rules for an imaginary race when it comes to skin color. Seeing as they don't really come from hot climates, it is very doubtful that they would have dark complexions >_<

Well, to look at a realistic way on things, this is a Sherpas (people from Everest). I believe the picture says a lot...

Posted Image

Besides, ArenaNet is making their game as realistic they can - so you don't get purple skin as you can in some games, for example (though, you'll get green for the sylvari :D).

When we're at different skin colors, can the asura maybe head into a more blue-ish skin type?

And another thing, you really could get the dark skin in GW1, you why wouldn't it also be for GW2? ~

The only way I'm making an asura is if I can make it black.

As for the norn, I agree with the "tan but not Elonian" idea.

They are not humans... They are Norn. It's an entire different race. So it wouldn't be discimination I think. We haven't seen any black Norn in Eotn btw. So I have no idea if it's possible.

We know, Charr can have dark fur and Sylvari and Humans can have dark skin tone. But what about Asura? (and Norn ofcourse). Asura are grey creatures. So it's unlikely that they can be black or white. Now is this discimination? No right?

But it's also an different race, just like the Norn. Same story basically. But because Norn look somewhat like humans. My guess is, that it's possible.

Black Norn - hell no. It just wouldn't... fit their culture.

Tanned Norn - I can deal with.

Vikings came from scandinavia.

Thats four countries:

Norway
Sweden
Denmark
Finland

They had black slaves, but they were not black themselves.

This ''God King'' looks like a half giant from persia... so it would be interesting if some elonians and tyrians had some ancesters in comon that got split.

They've said in an interview somewhere that their character creation would be better, but not on the same scale as in Aion. They've also said somewhere that anything can be changed in between now and the release date. But if you asked me, they could even be making major changes after the release date like in GW1.

Exactly! If you wanted to make a white character in Elona or Cantha you were able to. So I really don't see how the argument against being able to make a black Norn can hold water.
